  1. Several days pass without incident, and you finally receive the drone kit, set in your doorway.
  2.
  3. You stare at the large container, shaped eerily like a coffin.
  4. You crack your knuckles and start to grip and gently lift at parts of it, testing the weight and its distribution.
  5.
  6. Slowly but surely you maneuver it through your door and into the center of your living room. You sit down on your couch and take in deep breaths, focusing on the rhythm. After a minute, you get up and move for your bedroom to get Monika ready.
  7.
  8. You pick up the round drone and heft it to the living room before setting it down on the couch and pressing a flush button on its top. A slot opens on its front, revealing a camera with a small green light slowly brightening, waking up.
  9.
  10. Four blunted limbs extend out of it, and the machine stretches, a yawn echoing from its speaker before it straightens up to regard the room, and you.
  11.
  12. "Ah... Good morning, Anon! I guess it's time for me to get that new body, huh?" The drone awkwardly wobbles on the couch cushions, turning to face the rectangular object in the centre of the room. "Wow... Is that..."
  13.
  14. You frown to yourself, lost in thought as you stare at the box, taking in the details.
  15. The surface is a matte black, with the company name and specifications of the contents written in silver on the side. There is a small covered panel on the face, an imperfection on the otherwise undisturbed surface. You get up without a word and pry it free, revealing a small compartment with a drive slot, several buttons and an instruction booklet, written on real paper. You rub your thumb against the rough material as you glance over it. Installing Monika in this will be easy. You look over to regard the drone, smiling for the camera.
  16.
  17. "Looks like it! And hopefully it's well worth the price." You chuckle to yourself. The drone fidgets slightly, camera lens tightening its focus. "Alright! Let's get started before you get used to crab walking!"
  18.
  19. With that you pick up the spherical machine gently, legs wiggling in the air before tucking back into its chassis. Monikas voice speaks up, nervousness clear despite the noise from the speaker.
  20.
  21. "So, how is this gonna work?" The drone asks, camera scanning over the box and focusing on the exposed panel.
  22.
  23. "Well, the booklet has a few steps, but most of it is drone care and them trying to get me to spend more money. Installing you on it is gonna be easy!" You press the leftmost button, and the edges of the coffin-like box start blinking red, pulsating in a slow rhythm, accompanied with a soft rush of beating fan blades. The silent beat slowly picks up until it forms a steady crimson glow. The sound of fans whirring reaches a crescendo.
  24.
  25. "Okay, so the kit is warmed up. Now it's time to... Transfer the operating system." The last few words fall thick and unwieldy from your mouth, the way it describes her. The drones body rocks, an attempt at a nod. You open a panel on the back of it and unwind a cable, feeding it into the port. The red glow of the box momentarily blinks white, before turning green. You rub small circles on the head of the drone.
  26.
  27. "Alright, I'm going to start the transfer now. It said that odd sensation feedback is expected, so you're gonna have to bear with it for a moment, okay?" Monika hums in acknowledgement. You press the last button on the console, and the light of the drones camera abruptly shuts off.
  28.
  29. The rims of the kit start blinking green, and a cursory read through the booklet confirms that the process is underway. You interlock your fingers, resting your chin on your hands. You think about the copy of Monika you made as a back up, how she is still trapped in the void. Hundreds of possible paths fill your mind, beginning, twisting, ending or cutting off. You rub your temples and grit your teeth. The machine beeps, pulling you out of your trance.
  30.
  31. With a hiss, the rectangular pod slides open, revealing Monikas nude form. Tubes run into her limbs, pumping a crimson fluid into her. You stare at her face, the lack of expression and the shape of the container she lays in turning your stomach. You turn away and opt to search through your closet for some of her clothes you bought in advance. When you return you see her body stir in its confines, brushing the steel edges.
  32.
  33. Her eyes flutter, making you toss the clothes on the table and rush to her side. Her face quivers as the tubes turn transparent, running empty. You softly brush her bangs out of her face. She stretches softly and opens her eyes.
  34.
  35. Silence falls around the both of you like a curtain, leaving only you and her. The softness of her skin under your thumb. The heat of her flesh. Her eyes, gleaming emeralds in the noon-day sunlight flowing through the window. The sound of her breath.
  36.
  37. "Anon..." Her eyes widen at the sensation of her lips moving. She beams up at you, tears forming as she starts to reach up for you, only to be halted by the hoses tugging against her. She looks down at her body as a realization dawns on you.
  38. She shouts in alarm as you bound into a separate room.
  39.
  40. "Anon! Why am I naked!?" You hear the sound of metal bumping into metal, the tubes coming loose. "Clothes! On the table!" You shout against the wall. She wordlessly screams at you in response.
  41.
  42. You shut your eyes and wait for her to call you over. You're startled by the feeling of her wrapping her arms around your torso, her face pressed into your shoulder.
  43.
  44. "Monika?" You stutter. She looks at you over your shoulder, eyes glistening. "I'm here," she squeezes you, feeling your body, your shirt. "I'm finally here. With you." You feel her tears soaking into your shirt. You turn around and return her embrace, kissing her forehead.
  45.
  46. For what feels like the rest of the day she clings to you, mumbling and crying. Eventually you both move to the couch again, and she calms down.
  47.
  48. Monika has her head laid against your shoulder, slowly nuzzling into it. Her eyes are unfocused but twinkling, a small smile on her face.
  49.
  50. You lean your head over and nuzzle her back. She gradually stops and starts snoring gently, curled up against you. Your lips harden into a line and your brows furrow.
  51.
  52. The sun set a while ago, and you haven't even brought up the copy yet. You haven't really talked with her after she got her body. You haven't talked about how your six years older than her. Your foot taps quick, erratic thumps against the carpet. You haven't even moved the now-useless kit out of your living room. What about your attic? You never really finished clearing it out. You scratch at your temple, feeling your nails dig into your skin.
  53.
  54. Monika shuffles in her sleep, cuddling up into you with a small sigh. Despite your worries you smile and lean over to kiss her cheek. You wrap your arm around her and close your eyes, focusing on her warmth, her heartbeat.
  55.
  56. All in due time. All in due time.
