- With the bear struggling so desperately, and the path being so narrow, they both fell over the cliff. The bear was heavier, so it was on the bottom when the two struck the rocks. Grettir lay on top, but the bear beneath him was badly wounded from the fall. Grettir reached for his saz and drove the blade into the bear's heart. This was the bear's death.
- Grettir went home and took his fur cloak with him; it was all torn into pieces. He had with him the part of the bear's paw that he had sliced off. Thorkel sat drinking with his men when Grettir entered the hall, and the men laughed at the ripped cloak he was wearing.
