-

- This term, we are going to take a look at the names of some famous (and infamous) witches and wizards. We'll talk about whether a name itself can indicate whether a magical person is inclined towards good or evil.
-

-

-
- We all know who Draco Malfoy is, but let's take a step back and pretend for now that we know nothing of him. When you hear the name, do you get any first impressions? The name Draco comes from the Greek name Δράκων (Drakon). It means dragon or serpent. The surname Malfoy is French and roughly translates to bad faith. The name literally leaves you thinking of an ill-tempered, untrustworthy snake.
-

-

- Now let's take a look at Lucius Malfoy, Draco's father. We already know that Malfoy means bad faith. Lucius comes from the French word lux, meaning light.
-

-
Homework Assignment

-

-
- This week, we are going to take a look at the famous Weasley twins, Fred and George. Fred is short for Frederick, so we'll take a look at Frederick for the meaning of his name. It is German taken from frid and ric, meaning peace and ruler, mighty, respectively. Simply put, Fred means peaceful ruler. George is derived from the Greek name Γεώργιος (Georgios), which is taken from the Greek word γεωργός (georgos), which means farmer, worker of the Earth. Weasley consists of the German terms wil and helm, which translate to desire and protection.
-

-

- Taking what we've learned, we can conclude that Fred Weasley roughly means peaceful ruler of desire and protection and George Weasley roughly means farmer of desire and protection.
-

-
Homework Assignment

- 1. Do you think peaceful ruler is a fitting title for Fred Weasley? Yes or no? (5/1)
2. Do you think farmer, worker of the Earth is a fitting title for George Weasley? Yes or no? (5/1)
3. Do you think desire and protection are fitting for the Weasley family? Why or why not? (10/2)
4. Who do you feel has a better fitting name - Fred or George? (5/1)
Extra Credit Essay: Considering that Fred and George are twins, what do you make of the meaning of their names and how they relate to one another? Explain your answer in 2+ sentences. -
Week 3 - Severus & Albus

-

-
- This week, we're going to take a look at the name of one of the most complex wizards to ever exist, Severus Snape. His story is legendary, and opinions of him are widely divided, but what can we draw from his name? Severus is a name of Roman origin and translates to stern in Latin. The surname Snape is taken from the Old English word snaep, which loosely translates to dweller by the pasture. Putting Severus Snape together leaves you with a rough meaning of stern dweller by the pasture.
-

-

- It seems fitting that we move on to Albus Dumbledore, a wizard tied tightly to Severus Snape's complex history. Albus is a Roman name that means white, bright in Latin. Dumbledore is an old-fashioned word for bumblebee. Putting Albus Dumbledore together leaves you with a rough meaning of white, bright bumblebee.
-

-
Homework Assignment
