  1. Subject: Software Dev Specialization Question
  2. Message: Hey guys, I've been a big fan for a number of years and I trust your advice. Here's the situation, I've been working for a company for a little over a year. I started as an intern the summer between my Junior and Senior years. After the internship I worked part time for the entirety of my senior year. Now that I've graduated with the CS degree I'm working full time as a Software Developer.

  4. That's all fine and dandy, but the tricky part comes from what I've been working on. I'm a part of the Penetration Testing team, working with guys with various security certs (OSCP, GPEN, OSCE, etc.). I write custom security tools and malware to support this team. I work in languages ranging from (C/C++ to Python to PowerShell). Later this year I'm being sent to training to earn a GPEN (penetration testing) cert.

  6. My question is, is there any value for a developer to have a hybrid specialization in development and security or any other specialty for that matter? I fear that because I'm not working in the hipster web dev world (NodeJS, Django, etc.) that I may not be as highly prized by recruiters and companies.

  8. Let me know what you guys think! Love the show as always -Nick.
