- Homework: p. 30 part A - Complete the sentences with words from the box below.
- 1 must’a been (That’s the only explanation I can imagine for why she didn’t answer.)
- 2 should’a
- 3 must’a (That’s the only explanation I can imagine for all those packages.)
- 4 should’a gotten
- 5 wouldn’a (“shouldn’a” means I am the reviewer who did give it two thumbs up even though I thought it was horrible)
- 6 could’a
- 7 shouldn’a
- 8 must’a been, wouldn’a been
- ---
- “Coulda, woulda, shoulda” (in any order) = “Sure, many different things could have happened differently, but there’s no point worrying about it now.”
- ---
- You can write “should have” or “should’ve”. Don’t write “should of” or “shoulda”.
- We often pronounce “shouldn’t’ve”, but almost never write double (or triple or more) contractions.
- I’d’nt’ve done that. = I wouldn’t have done that.
- ---
- The reduced pronunciation that it’s important for you to use is “can” in affirmative sentences.
- If you give it the full pronunciation, many native speakers will think you said “can’t”.
- I can’t talk now.
- I can talk now. - Pronounce it like c’n and people will understand you correctly.
