  1. • How do you differentiate food of your culture from other cultures? (i.e. oily, raw, full of green)
  2. There's an ingredient called Mirin, which is like Cooking Wine. It gives a very distinctive flavor and it's used in many dishes. Also, soy sauce.
  3.
  4. • How often do you eat the food of your culture? (i.e. daily, weekly, bi-monthly) What does it consist of and why?
  5. Bi-Weekly. There's a pretty big focus on meat, but that's probably an American adaptation. There's a lot of regular Japanese meals, just heavily Americanized (more meat, different style cooking, substituted ingredients). Not living near the sea, I rarely eat fish (especially not Japanese-style prepared)? I eat rice every day though.
  6.
  7. • Is the method of making food of your culture more difficult compared to other cultures?
  8. No. Depending on what, of course. Sushi itself is more difficult I would say, as the appearance matters much more than the individual components. I wouldn't really presume that Japanese food is more difficult.
  9.
  10. • What is your most favorite food of your culture? Why? (Try to describe the feeling of eating it)
  11. Sukiyaki. It has an incredibly rich, deep flavor, and it smells amazing. Meat, Tofu, Shirataki Noodles, Green Onions.. I love it very much. It's quite a traditional dish, and that adds to the value.
  12.
  13. • Would you prefer food from some other culture rather than yours? Why?
  14. No. While I enjoy a variety of cuisines, there's a special place in my heart for Japanese food. Not all, but most. The style, the culture behind it, etc. I've never considered myself really into gourmet food, I'm fine eating American bastardizations of various non-Japanese ethnic food (panda express comes to mind?).
  15.
  16. • What do you think is the one food of your culture that everyone from that culture should know how to make? (except rice)
  17. Any variety of bento, or rice bowl. Sesame chicken bento! Perhaps gyuudon. Donburi. Any one of those would be nice. There's a bento culture in Japan, and Dons (rice bowls) are also related.
  18.
  19. • What restaurants or places would you recommend me to go to eat the food of your culture? Please include a name and what they mainly serve.
  20. I recommend trying to make some yourself. Look up RunnyRunny's youtube channel for inspiration there. Anyways, there aren't any legitimate Japanese restaurants in the Sacramento are that I know of. Mostly owned by Chinese/Koreans. San Fransisco has some of the best Japanese food in the US though, so if you're looking for real Japanese food, highly recommend Japan Town's.
  21.
  22.
  23. • What is the least favorite food of yours in your culture? Why?
  24. Nato? I'm not cultured enough to enjoy the infamous smelly beans.
