Verit - Auras

One of the most visible effects of increased Level is increase in the size and intensity of one's Aura. It was believed for some time that people of the first Level of Experience had no Aura, but this was dispelled after the creation of magic that amplified the visibility of Auras. Auras are tied to a person's morality and philosophy. Those who are self-sacrificing and give of themselves to help others, and follow Abnegation schools of philosophy have a white Aura. Those who act in self-interest and who seek strength and power have a black Aura. Those who staunchly believe in order and law above all else have a blue Aura, while those who believe in individuality and freedom have an orange Aura. Those who have no philosophical dedication, or believe in compromise and balance, have a grey Aura.

Most people have no visible Aura most of the time, as Auras at the first level are ordinarily no bigger than the body that projects them. The 14th level of experience, the highest in record, grants an aura that projects several inches from the body at rest, though legends tell of even greater heroes with Auras twice as big as themselves. Auras increase in size and brightness during times of emotion and exertion, and shrink and become transparent while resting or sleeping. Note that Auras, by and large, are not themselves an arbiter or judge of character – they merely indicate personal philosophy.

Certain people have exceptional Auras. The people native to the Aligned Realms are born with coloured Auras and have extreme difficulty altering them even if their personal philosophy runs counter to their Aura. Paladins universally have white Auras, and their auras glow larger and brighter than those of other people.

Through magic or willpower, a person can mask or even disguise their Aura. In Crossing, magical items that hide Auras are among the most common and inexpensive. They are a matter of course for Crossing nobles and politicians; a member of the court revealing their Aura would be an incredibly audacious and bold act.
