  1. Travel Encounter from PTU
  2. The following is a combat encounter I have thrown at my players, feel free to use it as writing exercise or in your own games. Keep in mind, turns in combat take 10 seconds of in-game time to complete.
  3.
  4. A Picky Ambush Predator
  5. Intended level of Player Trainers: 2-5
  6. Intended level of Player Pokemon: 5-10
  7. Location: Route44, Forest/lake
  8. Time: evening
  9. Pokémon: Lickitung (level 20)
  10. Opposing Trainers: no
  11. Environment: overcast, dark
  12. Stage 2: yes, if player has anything sour on them the Lickitung retreats immediately. If it detects its target is not food, it will run away after a short tussle.
  13.
  14. Player(s) are setting up camp despite an acrid smell lingering on the trees, not knowing they have entered a lickitung's territory.
  15. The lickitung is snaking its tongue around and tasting its environment. Given its squat and awkward body, its territory isn't terribly big and is limited to how far its willing to walk and how long its tongue is. Players will have a chance to detect the tongue as it retraces familiar textures and tastes until it finds new ones (like the players or their gear). Players who pass a Pokemon Education DC15 will accurately detect that the smell comes from Lickitung saliva and can get the drop on the Lickitung or leave, if a 10-14 is rolled they will accurately detect that a Pokémon is making that smell, but misidentify it. Lower than 10 they might think any number of incorrect things like the Ph of the lake or soil being off. (Survival and Insight are also valid skills to use for this. If the player can make the skill they use make sense, I say let them.)
  16.
  17. COMBAT
  18.
  19. If players are very competent, consider giving the Lickitung 5 Damage Reduction until its body is located as the players will be dealing with only the tongue until it is found. Also, consider the tongue to have the same Overland speed (5 meters a turn) as Lickitung or half its Overland (rounding down) if you're feeling merciful.
  20.
  21. Turn 1: Once a target has been selected by the Lickitung, it grapples it with its Wrap. on a hit, target loses 10% of their max hit points (a tick) from its ability "Tingle", and if it gains dominance in the grapple target loses a second tick from the move "Wrap". If dominance in the grapple is not achieved it will try again next turn unless it has taken 25% of its max hit points or more in one round, in which case it will retreat.
  22. Turn 2: Lickitung will use Lick and, on a hit, it activates both abilities "Toungelash" and "Tingle" to auto-proc the paralysis and deal an additional two ticks of damage. After this first lick, roll a d100, on a 75 or lower it detects if the target is food (any Pokémon smaller than it) or not food (if a trainer or a Pokémon bigger than it) and will continue to attack or retreat accordingly.
  23. Turn 3: at this point, the trainers have been battling a massive tongue for twenty seconds. If no one has attempted to look for the rest of the Lickitung's body now would be a good time to prompt them to. Perception DC10 should be challenging enough for those with Untrained (2d6) and Novice (3d6) ranks in Perception while being impossible for those with Pathetic (1d6) and easy for those with Expert (4d6). By this point the Lickitung will likely have started its retreat back to its little lair. Otherwise, keep fighting until it is defeated or captured (It could also escape by going into its lair, but in all likelihood it will be unconscious by turn three or four even if it starts retreating. Players will be players after all).
  24.
  25. Whether the Lickitung is defeated or captured, give the players a chance to find its lair. They will find treasures scattered around the entrance. Nuggets, Pokeballs, shoes, any the Lickitung has disposed of for the crime of not being food, or kept around because it likes its taste and texture.
  26.
  27. If captured, the player who caught it will have to roll a Command check with a DC10 to keep it from using a random move on a random target during combat until their command rank is at least 3, Lickitung's loyalty is at least 3 (this one will start at 1 of 5), or the player has 1 gym badge.
