- general new player tips for cedapug : by prsto
- (in no particular order)
- 1) General Rhythm of Progress
- - Slow down, take an attack. Once the attack is dead, it is important to move fast as a team so you can make it to the next big choke point (or past a big choke point!) before the infected have spawns again.
- - On survivor, it's generally 12-15 seconds until spawns are up and getting ready, meaning it is time to slow down
- - As you gain more experience, this timer is more internal and doesn't really need to be thought of
- 2) Try to always be aware of where your teammates are (survivor and infected)
- - Survivor: This mostly applies for seeing that someone is struggling with commons so you can help them, but is also useful for spawn blocking
- - Infected: Since you want to hit together, you want to know where your teammates are so you can either a)come from a different direction or b)follow them (i.e. spitter following a charger)
- 3) Know your weapon and its limits
- - Shotgun is going to be better in hallways and for killing close spawns fast. Teams with many shotguns will thrive by being close to each other
- - Uzi is better for sustained dps (damage per second) and has farther range, but (debatably) requires better aim. Teams with more uzis will be able to spread out a little to block spawns, but may suffer against wallkicks or inside tight areas.
- - I like to see shotgun player(s) in the front, or wherever spawns are expected, and uzis playing more around covering their team and being in positions where they can kite
- 4) Tank Support (infected side)
- - As a general rule of thumb, in a generic room fight (think barn tank map 4!), support should help at either 2500-3000 tank health OR when the tank has downed 1 survivor and is working on cornering the next.
- - If a tank is committing with the intent of a boomer landing, the boomer should obviously prioritise getting the best boom off possible, but earlier is better! (3 boom at 5k hp > 3 boom > 4k hp)
- - Early pulls are also an exception, where the smoker pulls into the tank as he commits with the goal of getting the tank an early corner (while the smoker then tries to live after)
- - First corner at 5500 hp > First corner at 4000 hp
- 5) Tank Fight (survivor side)
- - In general, survivors should prioritize the tank until its support comes in, and then they have to deal with the support and finish the tank.
- - Uzis can focus tank a bit harder if they trust their shotgun teammate in effectively dealing with some (or most) of the support
- - Shotguns should still shoot tank, but unlike uzi, you can look away between shots to check if support is coming in (easier on higher sensitivity)
- - With dark carny 3 generator tank as an example, any uzi players play up top, and one shotgun player is best watching boomer at the bottom (exceptions exist, pugs aren't always played out ideally, maybe you want the best player on the team watching boomer, idk).
- 6) Rocket Spawns
- - It's important to be good at source engine movement in general, but rocket spawns are essential. I don't just mean rocketing off the roof, but rocketing around corners (especially good for chargers, jockeys, and boomers)
- - I'm going to assume you know how to wallkick and do hunter movement, but that is also important. No rainbow hunters here buddy
- 7) Clearing Common
- - On survivor, if the hit is entirely dead and you aren't shooting any common, you are being a burden to your team. If the boomer goes alone and there are still spawns up, clear common but be positioned and ready to deal with more spawns.
- - Also, if the hit is entirely dead and someone is boomed, they should still be moving forward. It is your team's responsibility to help get commons off of them.
- - On the flip side, if a multi-boom lands and the rest of the hit is up, clear commons and be ready to clear the hit.
- 8) Finding spawns fast
- - This mostly comes with time and experience, but it is important to not only know the good spawn locations for each class in situations, but to reach them and spawn fast.
- - When I was new, other than playing, I also learned new spots by watching players better than me.
- 9) Practice while in queue (or not in queue)
- - This mostly goes for the novice queue guys: SirPlease servers have a config called zone:x on them. I know novice queue generally takes awhile to fill, so you can load up an empty SirPlease server, load Zone:X and practice shooting infected.
- - Helpful zone:x commands
- - !mode <mode> i.e. !mode skeet !mode cappers
- - !common <#> i.e. !common 0
- - !difficulty hardcore
- - !players <#> i.e. !players 1 !players 4
- - Apparently a new practice config is in the works, but I don't know much about it yet.
- 10) Hit Priority
- - I like to think of the priority as whatever spawn will result in the most damage if it lands. For Example, in a hallway, charger has priority implying having a spitter. Although it would be nice for all the cappers to land, we would like to see the other spawns setting
- up so that the charger has an easiest time landing
- - In a hit with a hunter, smoker, boomer, spitter, I would say hunter has the highest priority, so try and look to support the hunter if you can't land a multicap.
- 11) Playing Tank
- - A lot of new players struggle with playing tank, getting juked and kited and such. This will also come with experience, but I would say watch high level tank players, and notice how they are constantly driving whoever they are chasing into
- a corner. This involves knowing where to push them so they can't keep kiting you. If you find yourself getting juked, just hold W, keep your crosshair right on them, and for the love of god do not press S. Most tank jukes come from the tank backpedaling
- when a player runs into them or jukes.
- Have some fun
- - Don't get caught up in people trash-talking, just explain you're new and you should probably be picked last. This game is over 10 years old and we should all just be glad we still have people to share competitive configs with.
