  1. Jodah acted without thinking, reaching into the back of his mind to conjure the weak energy of his memories. At first he was unsure what to do with it, a sphere of white-hot anger and fear. Then he flattened it into a thin plane, into a blade at the heart of his mind, a blade similar to the one he tried to conjure when he first arrived.
  2.
  3. He flicked his wrist, and suddenly the fiery white blade was there, an extension of both his mind and his hand. He shouted and charged forward.
  4.
  5. Chaeska jerked and turned toward Jodah, surprised by the shout. Jodah raised the blade and brought it down, hard, on the keeper’s upper arm.
  6.
  7. He had meant to break the keeper’s grip or at most break a bone. Instead Chaeska’s heavy leather armor parted beneath his summoned blade like beef beneath a finely honed knife. Jaya, still clutched by the keeper’s gauntlet, fell to the floor in a heap.
  8.
  9. Within the armor were bones—not one, but a colleo tion—bundled together like sticks and covered with hidelike flesh that now shredded. Chaeska’s eyes flashed deep within their pits of flesh.

  13. Jodah raised his free hand and unleashed the spell, a blast of flame, directly in Chaeska’s face. Suddenly Jodah was spinning away, striking the wall one final time. There was screaming, and Jodah was surprised to realize that it wasn’t him.
  14.
  15. Jodah rose but did so slowly, his fingers splayed against reddish stone. Chaeska was fleeing now, smoke billowing from his face and robes. The huge keeper stumbled once, slumped against the wall, then rose and kept going.
  16.
  17. Jodah turned toward Jaya, who was prying the last of Chaeska’s now-severed fingers from her throat.
