Maybe (Amelia/Alexa ending)

There was once a girl. She used to be someone else, and threw all that away in hopes of being a knight. To matter to someone. She met another girl, who just wanted not to be helpless. Who wanted her family back.

This story has several endings.

In one, the two of them lived happily ever after. Worked out their differences. Maybe one had feelings for each other. Maybe they talked about it. Maybe they never did. But no matter what they were happy. When magic is involved, even once-in-a-million miracles happen sometimes. That ending wasn't likely, but it might have been theirs.

But it probably didn't happen that way. They were friends, close friends, but neither of them were quite right in the head. Maybe it got worse. Maybe the knight fell further, and further, until all she could see was her duty, her failures. Her falling short of a goal she never could have reached. Maybe it broke her. Maybe knowing what she'd done to herself already did. Maybe it was just seeing her friend hurt and knowing she couldn't stop it. Maybe she threw away the last parts of what made her, her, and just let her magic burn away everything but her sword, her mission, and her need to fight monsters.

Or maybe it was the other way around. The poor little helpless girl, so tired of being helpless, of doing nothing, of being the helper. Maybe she took a strange coin- another strange coin from someone she shouldn't have- and it changed her. Maybe one saw the other, and tried to help, or ran away, or just gave up too. Maybe a proud, dedicated knight with fire in her blood and duty alone in her thoughts fought a snarling monster with tears in its yellow eyes. Maybe it happened that way. Maybe not.

Or maybe it was simpler than that. Maybe the knight picked a fight they couldn't win. Maybe the helper got unlucky, and the knight just gave up. Maybe the city just ate them whole, the way it does sometimes. Or maybe not.

But there are people that remember the knight and her helper. A little girl working in a strange little shop. People living out their lives that don't quite remember seeing them pass. A lonely, old harpy and her quiet apartment. They did make a difference to someone, somewhere, however small. Maybe that's enough.

But the Overcity keeps changing, spreading across every world, and there are always more Puuchu and more monsters. And always more girls, believing they, too, can make a difference. Maybe they're right. Maybe not.
