  1. *** DWARVES ***
  2.
  3. Kalindi Combine - the original dwarvish territories. Very pure, in terms of dwarvish culture, with highly regimented artistic forms and a distinctly lawful bent. While influenced by gnomish (see below) to a small degree, the language remains very pure. Lots of hard consonants - Ks, Ms, Ls, and Bs. Soft consonants, like S, F, and Z, tend to end words and names when they're used at all. J sounds in this language are a hallmark of the gnomish influence.
  4.
  5. EXAMPLES:
  6.
  7. Asham - meaning 'city'.
  8. Talik - meaning 'fort-city'.
  9. Ha'ra - meaning 'earth shaman'. Likely a shortened combination of two longer words.
  10.
  11. Draw on some mutant combination of Sudanese and Greek for the general idea here.
  12.
  13. ---
  14.
  15. Marenyen Kingdom - a set of dwarven colonies, sharing a continent with the Kalindi Combine; they have the south, while the Combine has the north. They're much more liberal in their arts and their language, and more receptive to various cultural influences. While the dwarven core is still there, a gnomish cultural renaissance has influenced their language and so have various immigrants.
  16.
  17. EXAMPLES:
  18.
  19. Ashem - Marenyen variant on the Kalindi word 'Asham'. Respelling due to regional accent.
  20. Talek - Marenyen variant on the Kalindi word 'Talik'. Respelling due to regional accent.
  21.
  22. The difference between Marenyeni and Kalindi is probably similar to the one between Spanish and Portuguese; similarities rendered moot by different pronunciations, accents, and/or conjugations and declensions.
  23.
  24. *** HUMANS ***
  25.
  26. There are as many different human languages as there are city-states, so let's focus on the big ones that still have their own languages.
  27.
  28. Kortinn - a human city-state that rules over an archipelago near the dwarven coast. Heavy dwarven influences have crept into their language, which might resemble, or have resembled, Bengali. To a dwarf of any kind, particularly Kalindi, it would sound like dwarven being ripped apart with a hacksaw.
  29.
  30. Adondri - a central archipelago, and a major trading center. Draw on Spanish, plus or minus influences from other languages. Also host to great architects and builders.
  31.
  32. Manin - a small desert continent toward the south of the Great Sea, host to a number of pirates, a couple of halfling tribes, and a burgeoning population of numerous races. You might go with Fon as the basis for this one.
  33.
  34. *** ELVES ***
  35.
  36. As much like Latin as you can get without it actually being Latin. Elves alone of anybody have managed to unite into a single, cohesive culture, and they enforce their language across the board, both on themselves and on anyone they've conquered. They attach particular importance to the ideas of purity, fire, and elvishness, so there might be special cases in their language related to these. Also,
  37.
  38. *** ORCS ***
  39.
  40. Try Mandarin Chinese as the basis here; I'm still figuring orcs out, but they attach particular reverence to their ancestors, and use necromancy to turn prominent figures in their societies into sentient undead. Most tribes view undeath as holy, some have allowed their undead to rule them, and others eschew the undead altogether, preferring to put them to rest.
  41.
  42. *** HALFLINGS ***
  43.
  44. Discuss them with Caeli and get back to me.
