Some experts attribute our collective amnesia and hence surprise at each milestone of AI achievement to a paradox—the “AI effect”. Each time AI brings a new technology into the common fold, people become accustomed to it and stop considering it “AI”.2 The definition of AI thus evolves constantly, confounding meaningful discussion and making it easier for the popular media and culture to paint AI dystopias.
