Herobrine is not in Minecraft.
There are no references to him at all in the source code, and there is no code to allow for any entity to act like Herobrine. There is no level terrain code to generate redstone torches, 2x2 tunnels or elaborate dungeons with traps.
There is no possible way Herobrine can ever exist in any unmodded clients or servers. Any claims that he is in Minecraft are completely false. Any appearances he may have are caused by mods being installed.
All signs of Herobrine, like trees with no leaves, random glowstone towers, suspicious messages on signs, etc. are either glitches, formatted naturally, or placed by another player to mislead you.
The Minecraft Wiki and Forums do not partake in any viral Herobrine hoax. Any deletion of Herobrine-related comments or stories are purely because Herobrine does not exist, and the stories are either fictional, with an intent to mislead others, or the result of users playing mods installed on their game without their knowledge.

From the original creepy-pasta, Herobrine creates random constructions, such as sand pyramids in oceans and long 2×2 tunnels. He also cuts off all the leaves from trees.
Herobrine first appeared in a single image detailing an encounter. It was posted on the 4chan's  /v/ board, and gained very little attention. It stated how Herobrine had appeared in someone's single-player game, littering the map with various pyramids and tunnels. It is the first media to name him as Herobrine.
It was only later that Herobrine grew in popularity, when the Brocraft streamer "Copeland" photoshopped Herobrine into several screenshots to show to his chat. He had recently taken a liking to the story, and wished to be a part of it. After getting largely good reactions, he decided to stage a hoax. He has explained exactly how that took place in an email.[1]
Copeland had played through the world as a normal lets-player would, deliberately avoiding the work-in-progress room he had set up for the hoax. Herobrine was introduced to the stream here  (at 20:45). He is confirmed to be a retextured painting. Copeland then screamed and ran out of the room, promptly ending the stream.
Copeland pretended to be shaken up in the chat, and later posted a message onto the forums , linking to the video to spread it around, in the hope to get similar reactions.
After a while, Copeland removed the painting and reverted to normal textures. He proceeded to stream further, pretending to be scared. He announced that he would delete the world to never meet Herobrine again.
Later on, Patimuss made a video showing Herobrine in a user-made lava field. This Herobrine was free-standing, unlike the previous video. Due to this, it is likely he was a retextured door. The livestream went down after Patimuss ran away and saved his game, only to resume ten minutes later , where Herobrine had disappeared.
Later on, during the second stream, Patimuss can be heard talking to his wife, stating he was trolling. This flooded the livestream chat with outrage. He then faked a game crash. Copeland disliked that Patimuss outed Herobrine as a fake.
It is unknown when exactly it happened in relation to Patimuss's video, but Copeland then posted links in chat, leading to http://ghostinthestream.net/him.html . This is likely where the nickname "Him" originated from. The page features Steve's face, but with real, frantically rolling eyes in the place of his block eyes, modified to be completely black.
Below the face, there are a jumble of characters and letters. after removing all non-alphabet characters, the following message is revealed:

“	It has been reported that some victims of torture, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being tortured. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP.	„

The message keeps telling the viewer to "wake up", implying they're living in a fantasy world, and this text hidden in the page is their "note". The above text is from another creepypasta, entitled "Wake Up".
The stream proceeded later with no further Herobrine sightings. Copeland continued to adamantly state Herobrine was real for about a year onwards. The wiki asked Copeland several questions regarding the event, which are located here.
Since the stream, there has been a huge increase in his popularity, propelling Herobrine to meme status, and making him an icon of the community. There are several mods, animations, pieces of artwork and constructions of Herobrine that have been created.

Herobrine has two distinct pronunciations, suspected to be because of pronunciation differences between America and Europe.
It is speculated that most Europeans would pronounce the word as "hero brine", brine being salt-saturated water.
While it is speculated that most Americans would pronounce the name as "Hiro brin". Both e's are pronounced differently, with the first e being pronounced as an i, and the last e being silent.
The "European" version is seen as canon, mainly because the Brocraft team pronounced him as such in their livestream, and because Herobrine himself, canonically, is Swedish.

Canonical
Herobrine is Notch's dead brother, somehow embedded into Minecraft. While this is the "canon", this is also completely false in reality, as Notch has no brother.
Ghost aside, there are two plausible canon theories remaining.
Herobrine shows a lot of characteristics of being a form of virus, such as manipulating game worlds, deleting threads and sending messages through the Minecraft Forums. Perhaps also hacking into Notch's email and Twitter to reply on his own existence. Or, Herobrine is simply a figment of the users imagination. All users the user talked to, including Notch's email reply, could simply be the creation of the player's mind. This would also explain Notch's rejection of the canon, as showing the story is all in the user's head.
Herobrine is near-certainly inspired by Slenderman , who is also the inspiration behind Endermen.

Community
The most popular theories among users is that Herobrine is a ghost. Other theories can involve him being a higher being, a demon, a bad omen, or the suggestions in the canonical explanation. However, most of these are written as if Minecraft itself is reality, rather than from the player controlling the avatar within the game. Herobrine canonically has not appeared in real life, and remains confined to technology.

Herobrine is a human entity, with exactly the same skin as "Steve". However Herobrine has bright white eyes that glow in the darkness, as if they are a light source.

Community
Herobrine can sometimes be seen holding tools, such as pickaxes. This stems from the widespread community belief that Herobrine was a miner. Usually, his hands are empty.
Herobrine is often portrayed by the community as a dead miner, killed long before the player's arrival. His appearance, however, does not suggest either of these are the case. But with Minecraft's abandoned mineshafts and strongholds, as well as mining being a large part of the game, the game itself has shaped public perception of the character to suit this persona.

Herobrine is said to have the ability to run in Minecraft. This is indicated by the original source. The Brocraft stream portrays him as almost always stood up straight, with arms to his sides, watching the player. He is not seen to physically move within the Brocraft stream, but he moves location during the stream. It is unknown if Herobrine can swim, use minecarts, boats or Nether portals. Like most ghosts, it is likely he simply has no use for most methods of transportation.

Community
Much like angered Endermen, Herobrine is widely believed to move via teleportation. Nearly all of the community actually reject the canon, describing him as running.
Herobrine cannot fly, and no variation states this as "canonical". However, he appears to be able to glide. Which is to say, moving in directions without physically moving, while not moving upwards. This is usually evident in retreating back into fog.
Herobrine is often portrayed with his head crooked or twitching. This is likely due to him being seen moreso as a virus/creepy entity in Minecraft, rather than a ghost.

Canonical
Herobrine is able to build and destroy in Minecraft. The original image states the player found long 2x2 tunnels, small pyramids in the middle of the ocean and trees with no leaves. The full extent of Herobrine's building capacity is unknown, but the given examples indicate Herobrine has awareness of shape, and can differentiate materials from each other.
Herobrine seems to solely target human players. He did not seem to interact with any other mobs nearby in the Brocraft stream, some of which were spiders and zombies. His canonical relation to further mobs added since he appeared is a complete mystery. His interactions with other mobs is not mentioned in the original image. While there is a chicken present in the image, Herobrine does not seem interested in it at all, and is solely focused on the player.

Community
Herobrine has, on occasion, interacted with other mobs. He is sometimes able to take control of passive animals, and revive/spawn undead mobs.
Herobrine seems able to drastically change his environments with no viable source of resources to do so. Most expansions to his abilities involves cobblestone placing, dungeon building, using redstone torches and setting traps. He exhibits all the symptoms of a Creative player in the game.
Herobrine seems unable to enter the Nether, or the End.

Herobrine's intentions vary, but they usually fall under two categories. One variation is based on pure community interpritation, while the other, based on the canon.

Canonical
In the Stalker variation, he stalks the player, disappearing if approached. This variation is derived from his origins.

Community
In the Vengeful variation, he tries to ensnare the player in traps, presumably to steal their items. He waits for people to enter his dungeons, then either seals them inside, or teleports behind them, presumably killing them. Some rarer variations of this particular version says he breaks the player's creations, and steals their items from chests. This variation is likely inspired by griefers and trolls.

We all love the music discs in minecraft! But did you know that there is a haunted music disc? Music disc 11, the broken music disc, is supposedly the music disc sent by Herobrine himself. Notch quoted on twitter, “Music disc 11 was an error inserted into minecraft. Me and Jeb are still trying to solve the problem of the Herobrine theory behind the disc.” Posted on 5/7/11.  If played, the disc will send out aminous noise, then you will hear coffing, the person in the disc running from a mob., (Endermen, wolf , Herobrine) and then the person shovelind dirt quickly as if trying to escape. Recent upload on youtube, the disc 11 secret,  shows the commentator playing the disc, the Herobrine appearing, burning down structures, and killing the player. In a frenzy, the commentator put the video to a black screen, later the video returned to the minecraft screen and the commentator’s minecraft avatar still lying dead with the you died screen. Seconds later the commentator ended the video appologizing for the interupted video.

Cracking the Disc

(This solving will be brief, and to the point of understandment) While playing creative mode on minecraft, i played the disc and examined the sounds for a bit. In the disc sounds, the person in the audio recording has no evidence of disturbing an enderman nor a wolf. Decoding the disc in the appdata file, i find that the person in the audio recording is in fact Herobrine, but it is stating the fact that he saw an enderman and was killed, making the ghost theory of Herobrine true. Bluflap out.

Today I will introduce you to a discovery about the disc 11, so yes, this drive which has raised so many mysteries at its output: strange, scary, it was not music but a series of sounds that seemed to create a story. This is where the discovery, made by a French and more! This part is the end of the soundtrack, when the mysterious noises appear. One can easily distinguish "12418", figures which may mean nothing wanting, but in fact it is simply the signature of C418, the creator of the sounds and music Minecraft. Indeed, mean 12 C in the Ascii table in hexadecimal, 12 418, so it's C418!

Salut à tous !
Si je vous dit que j'ai TROUVER le secret du fameux disque 11 vous me croyez ? En tout cas je vous montre ça de suite ! (Je doit être le seul a avoir fait cette decouverte :D )
A la base je suis un beatmaker, et comme par habitude je travailler sur des compos sur le logiciel Fl Studio. Et par curiosité j'avais envie d'analysé le spectre audio des sons de minecraft pour voir leur structure musicale.

Jusqu’à ce que je tombe sur le disque 11 ! J’écoute... j’entend les bruits des pas, de "briquet", d'enderman etc normal quoi.... Et ariver à la fin du disque je vois ça !!

Ah c'est surprenant pas vrais ? ;)
J'en déduit donc que ce disque 11 montre un mineur dans son exploration de grotte surement à la recherche de diamants, etc.... et qu'il doit avoir peur d'un enderman qu'il a aperçu dans la grotte, du coup on l'entend courrir au début jusqu’à se qu'il s'arette pensant être à l'abri. Après il prend son "briquet" ? (La je ne trouve pas d’hypothèse) et ouvre un "livre" ? ( Et la non plus...) Ensuite il entend l'enderman qui ne doit pas être bien loin de lui alors son cœur bat et il se met à courir car il à peut-être du le voir. On l'entend courrir sur du gravier et la ... plus de bruit ! Car je pense qu'il à du se faire exploser par un CREEPER sans faire attention devant lui en courant (Il devais regarder derrière a cause de l'enderman, et tomber sur le Creeper !)

On vois clairement un visage de creeper sculpté dans le son. Et a coter les chifres "12 418".
"418" sachant que le compositeur des sons de Minecraft et C418. Reste a voir pour le 12 ?
Le 12 veux peut-être signifier un fameux "disque 12" qui n'existe pas dans Minecraft, mais le 13 existe lui et est aussi sombre que le 11.

EDIT: Donc dés que les pas sur le gravier s'arette (La partie la plus jaune sur l'image)
On entend un léger bruit synthétique (La tête de creeper) et ensuite on entend les bruit du creeper (Donc les numéros) A savoir que sur l'image la partie la plus bas représente les basse jusqu'au aigu tout en haut.

EDIT 2: En fait le 12 signifie tout simplement le "C" dans la table ASCII en Hexadécimal. http://www.asciitable.com/
Et c'est aussi le nombre de disque qu'il y a en jeux.
C'est bluffant !! :)

Ah, it is not surprising true? ;)
So I deduce that this disc 11 shows a minor in his cave exploration probably looking for diamonds, etc. .... and should be afraid of a Enderman he saw in the cave, the So we hear jogging early to be thinking that arette be free . After he takes his " lighter " ? ( I can not find the hypothesis ) and opens a "book" ? ( And no more ...) Then he hears the Enderman which should not be far from him when his heart beats and he starts to run as it perhaps see . We hear jogging on gravel and ... more noise ! 12 would perhaps mean a famous " disc 12 " which does not exist in Minecraft, but he is 13 and is as dark as 11.

Herobrine.exe: a Minecraft Creepypasta.

This Creepypasta begins one night; a Minecraft player is browsing for seeds to put on his game for a video. He kept browsing, kept searching for a seed since the other ones didn't look fascinating. But then he clicked on a page with a seed labeled 'Herobrine.exe' once he clicked the more details link.

A download appeared on his desktop. He got suspicious, but launched the program. Odd enough, the username was his first, middle, and last name. He automatically knew that this wasn't just a hacked client; but he kept playing on.

Once he launched the game under his username and password. There was no Mojang logo. The title screen wasn't normal. The MINECRAFT Logo had moss and blood on it. The panorama background had a brown sky, and black clouds. The grass was grey and had mutilated mobs on it, organs and all. The water was crimson red and all the trees were burning. Where the version number was in the normal game is it said:

"Herobrine Will Kill You 666" And the Mojang copyright message where it usually says Copyright Mojang AB, don't distribute!

It said, "It's too late now. You can't escape!" and the GUI had only one working button. Singleplayer, which already had one world in it, "PREPARE TO DIE!" was its title.

The player hesitated, but the world automatically loaded without him clicking the mouse. He spawned in a world similar to the one in the panorama, but the render distance was tiny. The sound was gone, except for murmurs, whispers, moans, and occasionally a cry or scream. He got scared, especially when seeing a cow.

The cow looked completely normal, but when it turned around. It had white eyes with blood underneath his eyes. The same eyes with blood were on all the mobs. Then, the song 11 played, but it slowly got slower and more demonic. Then he saw what appeared to be Herobrine; he was holding a fire block and was halfway in the fog moving his head to the demonic music. After the song was complete, Herobrine's face appeared on the screen with sharp teeth and bloody eyes. Showed for a second, then the player died, but not like a Minecraft death, the game cut to a third person view.

Of his character getting stabbed by and invisible force, it was more gruesome than possible in the Minecraft graphics. It showed the player with his intestines falling out and him bleeding as a huge wound in his abdomen gushes organs out of his body. It was so realistic. The lights in the player's house went out and he respawned in game. He kept exploring and found a hut on a mountain. The player made his way up the mountains. Randomly finding signs along the way saying things like "You can't Run", "Turn back now", "See you in hell", etc. These signs were covered in blood and the last one was the most gruesome of all. It said:


"You will see that Notch is dead. So is everyone else. The world has been taken be me. You're next."

The house was made of bedrock He went in to the house. And saw the most graphic thing that can ever be seen in a video game. It was a corpse of Notch's avatar impaled, hung, with his eyes gouged out and internal organs spilled out on the floor. His cape was ripped and soaked in blood. Once the player turned around to run. He saw "him" in the doorway.

Then, Herobrine yelled "STOP" in real life. The player experienced loss of vision. But regains himself after two minutes, finding himself in the nether, he keeps seeing grotesque imagery of players being murdered, stabbed, dismembered, impaled, raped, and beheaded on the screen.

Then he heard a group of children chant demonically "They're all dead, you're next!" then screams and other disturbing noises started playing backwards while the player was slowly strangled and beaten by dead players who had previously succumbed to Herobrine.

The player was scared and confused. He knew this wasn't a bootleg game, but a possessed version. He couldn't handle it. He quit the game and put it in the recycle bin, clearing it immediately. After he emptied the recycle bin. The screen went black, and Herobrine came and said,

"You can't escape. You think deleting the game will do anything. Boy, are you stupid. I am beyond the game and I will never leave. You have challenged my power. Only God can help you now, because it's time for you to die!"

Two seconds later, the game loaded up, with much gorier graphics than before. It was raining blood. There were photorealistic dead bodies scattered everywhere. Then, Herobrine ran straight at the player, broke through the monitor, and attacked him. He let out a terrifying scream as he was thrown against the wall. His eyes were bleeding and he had no pupils. After this ordeal, his neighbor had heard and saw it all and called emergency services.

Four minutes later, Paramedics, Firefighters, and Police were on the scene. The player was rushed to the hospital while he was in a coma. The police did an investigation only to find blood on the wall written as 'I'll be back' and 'Only God can help you now'.

The same words were carved on the player's back and chest. Three days later the player woke up, he felt different. Terrified per say, he then vowed to never play Minecraft again. He was lucky; Herobrine.exe has killed everybody who has downloaded it before him. He was the only survivor of Herobrine.exe.

The Information : The First Player Experience About Herobrine

I had recently spawned a new world in single-player Minecraft. Everything was normal at first as I began chopping down trees and crafting a workbench. I noticed something move amongst the dense fog (I have a very slow computer so I have to play with a tiny render distance). I thought it was a cow, so I pursued it, hoping to grab some hides for armor.

It wasn't a cow though. Looking back at me was another character with the default skin, but his eyes were empty. I saw no name pop up, and I double-checked to make sure I wasn't in multiplayer mode. He didn't stay long, he looked at me and quickly ran into the fog. I perused out of curiousity, but he was gone,

I continued on with the game, not sure what to think. As I expanded to world I saw things that seemed out of place for the random map generator to make; 2x2 tunnels in the rocks, small perfect pyramids made of sand in the ocean, and groves of trees with all their leaves cut off. I would constantly think I saw the other "player" in the deep fog, but I never got a better look at him. I tried increasing my render distance to far whenever I thought I saw him, but to no avail.

I saved the map and went on the forums to see if anyone else had found the pseudo-player. There were none. I created my own topic telling of the man and asking if anyone had a similar experience. The post was deleted within five minutes. I tried again, and the topic was deleted even faster. I received a PM from username 'Herobrine' containing one word: 'Stop.' When I went to look at Herobrine's profile, the page 404'd.

I received an email from another forum user. He claimed the mods can read the forum user messages, so we were safer using email. The emailer claimed that he had seen the mystery player too, and had a small 'directory' of other users who had seen him as well. Their worlds were littered with obviously man-made features as well, and described their mystery player to have no pupils.

About a month passed until I heard from my informant again. Some of the people who had encountered the mystery man had looked into the name Herobrine and found that name to be frequently used by a swedish gamer. After some further information gathering, it was revealed to be the brother of Notch, the game's developer. I personally emailed Notch, and asked him if he had a brother. It took him a while, but he emailed me back a very short message.

I did, but he is no longer with us.
