40. Riggs and Murtaugh are on the trail of South African diplomats who are using their immunity to engage in criminal activities.
 41. Los Angeles police sergeant Roger Murtaugh and his partner, Sergeant Martin Riggs, are working on yet another drug-related case. Soon after finding one million dollars worth of South African Krugerrands in a crashed red BMW after a chase, Riggs and Murtaugh are assigned to keep an eye on Leo Getz, who is scheduled to testify in a case. There are people who don't want Leo to testify: a group of drug smugglers led by Arjen Rudd, the minister of diplomatic affairs for the South African consulate. Rudd turns out to be the man that Riggs and Murtaugh are after in the drug case they were working on before Leo was placed in their protective custody, which doesn't look very protective when Leo is kidnapped by Rudd's right hand man Pieter Vorstedt. Riggs ends up falling for Rudd's secretary Rika Van Den Haas, who doesn't like Rudd. In a confrontation with Vorstedt, Riggs is told the true circumstances behind the death of his wife Vicky, who died in a car crash in 1984: the car crash was caused by Vorstedt, who was supposed to have killed Riggs. Minutes after Vorstedt tries to kill Riggs, Riggs finds Rika dead, and this sends Riggs over the edge.
 42. Lethal Weapon 2 doesn't recycle ideas and plot points from the first movie, but instead expands on the first movie by developing Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh's personal lives, the introduction of new villains, and the addition of a third sidekick which adds plenty of moments of humour. The action is still just as good, and there is still plenty to enjoy about Lethal Weapon 2.

Lethal Weapon 2 wastes no time getting started as we see LAPD Detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) in the middle of a police pursuit through the streets of Los Angeles with an unidentified suspect driving a red BMW which turns out to be transporting a trunk full of gold Krugerrands. There is an illegal smuggling operation which is being spearheaded by South African consul-general Arjen Rudd (Joss Ackland) and his chief enforcer Pieter Vorstedt (Derrick O' Connor) however they are blatantly doing so while hiding behind the fact they have "Diplomatic Immunity". Captain Harris (Steve Kahan) assigns Riggs and Murtaugh to babysit the irritating, obnoxious and overeager Leo Getz (Joe Pesci), a federal witness who is going to testify against the South African smuggling operation. Riggs also finds himself a love interest, Rika Van Den Haas (Patsy Kensit) who is also Rudd's secretary at the South African Consulate. Rudd and Vorstedt continue to deceitfully continue their smuggling operation while hiding their diplomatic credentials and Riggs and Murtaugh vow to take them down.

Lethal Weapon 2 adds a lighter comedic element with the introduction of Joe Pesci as Leo Getz. It's hard to believe upon seeing Leo Getz that Joe Pesci would later net himself an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as the volatile Tommy De Vito in Goodfellas (1990). Here in Lethal Weapon 2, Pesci's Leo Getz is nothing more than an irritating annoyance but enhances the comic relief to counterbalance the violent action scenes.

It was great to see Mel Gibson and Danny Glover continue their dynamic partnership as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh. Lethal Weapon 2 is a perfect example of a sequel that continues the story and introduces more elements rather than rehashing the story from the first movie. Joss Ackland and Derrick O'Connor were excellent as the chief villains of the movie. Patsy Kensit adds sex appeal as the beautiful Rika Van Den Haas who finds herself caught up in the war between the LAPD and the South African criminals.

Keep an eye out for Dean Norris (TV's Breaking Bad), Jeanette Goldstein (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and Mark Rolston (The Departed) in small roles.

Director Richard Donner has continued to weave his magic as a director and has struck box office gold with the success of Lethal Weapon 2 as one of the biggest movies of 1989.

What can you say about Lethal Weapon 2? There's never a dull moments with plenty of action-packed scenes along with plenty of humour. A definite must for all Lethal Weapon fans as well as fans of action.

9/10.
 43. When I saw the first Lethal Weapon movie (admittedly I was underaged at the time) I thought a better flick could never be dreamed of. I was wrong, its all here the chemistry between Glover & Gibson is better than ever, the action is faster and to my lasting surprise the comedy has been much improved.

The inclusion of Joe Peschi as the whinny Leo Getz was a master stroke and finally completed the picture.

SEE IT!
 44. That first movie raised the craft of torture to a low art. Expect no less in LW2, directed by Richard Donner and written by Jeffrey Boam. This installment features a surfboard decapitation, death by carpenter's nail gun, a bomb wired to a very sensitive seat ( and reduction of the Afrikaaner diaspora by about one-half. (24July 1989, p.53)
 45. After engaging in a high speed chase with South African smugglers and recovering a trunk full of krugerrands, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) are assigned to the less dangerous job of protecting federal witness Leo Getz (Joe Pesci). Soon, however, they learn that Getz is involved in the same smuggling ring, laundering money made by South African diplomats hiding under their diplomatic immunity status. Lethal Weapon 2 is the second movie in the Lethal Weapon series, preceded by Lethal Weapon (1987) (1987) and followed by Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) (1992) and Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) (1998). It is based on a story and screenplay by American screenwriters Shane Black (who created the characters in the first movie), Warren Murphy, and Jeffrey Boam. Krugerrands are a South African monetary unit made mostly of solid gold (with a little copper thrown in). The chief monetary unit of South Africa is called the "rand". "Kruger" comes from the face depicted on the coin of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. They aren't anymore. However, during the 1970s and '80s, they were outlawed because of South Africa's position on apartheid. Apartheid is a system of racial segregation in South Africa that limited the rights of black South Africans and kept them "apart" from white South Africans. Apartheid existed in South Africa for decades until it was abolished 1994. In southern Africa, "kaffir" is a ethnic slur referring to a black person. No. The scene requires a serious amount of suspension of disbelief but it really makes for a fun action sequence. Riggs is driving a large, heavy-duty GMC Sierra (a 1989) that likely has a V8 engine and also has a heavy duty rear suspension setup— he uses it to tow the trailer he lives in. However, Riggs wraps the chain he uses to pull out the stilt near the base of the stilt where it's bolted to the concrete post. The bolts, plus the weight of the house on the stilt would make it impossible to yank out with Riggs' truck. In reality, depending on where Riggs had secured the chain to his truck—it looks like it's been attached to the rear axle assembly—the force would have either bent the axle severely or ripped it loose from the undercarriage. It's possible he could have bent the stilt enough if he'd attached the chain about halfway along the length of the support but that would be highly unlikely too, i.e., it would cause some damage to the stilt itself but it's unlikely the whole house would come down. Yes and no. The house that's destroyed in the movie was a replica built on a backlot at Warner Studios. The real house was used as a shooting location but it's still standing at 7436 Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills. It was designed by a man named John Lautner, who was a famous architect. Trapped in the shipping container loaded with South African drug lord Arjen Rudd's (Joss Ackland) Mercedes and shrink-wrapped packages containing hundreds of million of dollars of American money, Riggs and Murtaugh wait until the container is hanging over the Alba Varden. The container doors suddenly burst open and the Mercedes comes flying, exploding into a fireball and followed by thousands of bills, which scatter irretrievably on the water. Riggs and Murtaugh then rappel from the container into the ship's cargo hold. A fight breaks out during which Riggs and Murtaugh manage to take out several of Rudd's henchmen. However, Rudd's hired assassin, Pieter Vorstedt (Derrick O'Connor) succeeds in tossing a knife into Riggs' right hamstring, disabling him. Riggs manages to get up on his feet, pulls out the knife, and uses it to stab Vorstedt several times in the gut. When Vorstedt also gets up and pulls a gun on Riggs, Riggs finishes him off by pressing the loading button that releases the overhanging container pod. It falls on Vorstedt, crushing him. When Murtaugh calls out to Riggs to see if he's okay, Rudd open fires on Riggs, pumping several bullets into him. Murtaught turns on Rudd, who is flashing his dipolatic immuity card, but shoots him anyway. "It's just been revoked," he yells out. Murtaugh rushes to his severely-wounded partner and cradles Riggs' seemingly lifeless head in his arms. "You're not dead," Murtaugh entones over and over, "not until I tell you." Riggs replies by asking Murtaugh to reach into his pocket and get his cigarettes. Once Murtaugh has the pack, Riggs tells him to throw them away, saying, "Those things will kill ya!" Riggs then asks whether they've managed to get all the bad guys, and Murtaugh replies, "They've all been de-kaffir-nated." Sharing a laugh together, Riggs and Murtaugh await the arriving police, whose sirens can be heard in the distance. a5c7b9f00b
