General tips and advice:

Google
Enter any information you have in to Google, any phone numbers, name or addresses, search them in Google.

Facebook
Have their phone number, but can't find their Facebook? First login to your account and enter the phone number in the search bar. If this fails; log out, put their phune number in the name field on the login page, and press "forgot password". Occasionally, this will bring up their Facebook account and will provide you part of their email address.

Looking for birth certificates or marriage certificates?
Search local .gov pages. In the US most records are stored in online archives, a simple search can easily find useful documents.
