小屋の中に入っても、身を震わせる寒さからは逃れられなかった。%K%P
Even after entering the cabin, we couldn't escape from the cold.

私達は全員雪まみれで、着ているコートはびしょ濡れだった。%K%P
We were all covered in snow, and our coats were sopping wet.

背負っていたゆにを床に横たえると、黄泉木はゆにの服を脱がしにかかる。%K%P
Carrying Yuni inside, Yomogi laid him on the floor and began removing his clothes.

黄泉木「みんな、服を脱げ」%K%P
Everyone, take off your clothes.

その言葉に、黛が舌打ちする。%K%P
Mayuzumi clucked her tongue at his words.

黛「また……つまんない冗談を――」%K%P
Yet again... Enough with your stupid jo――

黄泉木「服を脱げ！」%K%P
Take off your clothes!

黄泉木「指を切り落としたいか？　低体温症で死にたいか？」%K%P
Do you want to have to chop off your fingers? Do you want to die of hypothermia?

私は素直に脱ぎ始めた。%K%P
I obediently began to remove my clothes.

靴、手袋、何枚も重ね着したコート。%K%P
Shoes, gloves, the many layers of coats I was wearing.

コートの中の服も、汗で湿っていた。%K%P
The inside of the coats were also damp with sweat.

身につけていたものがびしょ濡れだったせいか、脱ぐことで逆にいくぶん寒気が和らいだ気がした。%K%P
It may have been that what I was wearing had gotten soaked, because taking it off had the opposite effect, making me feel less cold.

さすがに私も恥ずかしかったが、この状況でそんなことも言っていられない。%K%P
I was embarrassed too, but I kept my mouth shut because it was necessary in our current situation.

毛布を身体に羽織って、その下で服を脱ぎ捨てた。%K%P
I covered my body with a blanket, and took off my clothes underneath it.

もちろん下着はつけたままだけど。%K%P
But I left my underwear on, of course.

It was kind of drafty.

服がないと不安になる。%K%P

黄泉木「冬川さん、地下倉庫にガスバーナーの燃料がある。持ってきてくれ」%K%P
Fuyukawa-san, there's some fuel left for the gas burner in the basement storeroom. Can you go get it?

こころ「……え？」%K%P
...What?

黛「なっ……！　もう、燃料はないはずじゃ……！？」%K%P
Wh...! I thought there wasn't any fuel left...?!

黄泉木「もしものときのために取っておいた」%K%P
I stored it away just in case.

黄泉木「もっとも、せいぜいバケツ１杯分のお湯を作るくらいしか残ってないけどね」%K%P
However, there's only enough left to warm one bucket of water at the most.

黄泉木「急いで！」%K%P
Hurry!

私は裸足のままで、地下倉庫へ降りていった。%K%P
I went down to the basement barefoot.

黄泉木の言う通り、棚の奥に隠れるようにして、カセットタイプの燃料が１本だけ、置いてあった。%K%P
Just as Yomogi had said, there was a single container of cassette-type fuel left, placed at the very back of the shelves as if hidden.

それを持って上に戻る。%K%P
Finding it, I return back up.

ガスバーナーでお湯を沸かす。%K%P
We heated the water with the gas burner.

黛が必死な様子でバーナーに手をかざした。%K%P
Mayuzumi desperately held her hands close to the burner.

火力はストーブとは比較にならないが、それでも火があることがいまはとても心強かった。%K%P
It couldn't compare with the stove in terms of heating power, but having any fire at all right now was very reassuring.

黄泉木「よせ」%K%P
Stop it!

黄泉木「火に手をかざすな」%K%P
Don't warm your hands over the fire!

黛「な、なんでよ……」%K%P
W, why not...?

黄泉木「感覚がないだろう？　熱さを感じないから、火傷する危険がある」%K%P
You've lost your sense of touch, right? You can't feel any heat, so you could burn yourself.

濡れた身体をタオルで拭く。%K%P
I dried my body with a towel.

手足の先は真っ白だった。%K%P
The tips of my fingers and toes were pure white.

少し痺れを感じるだけで、ほとんど感覚はない。%K%P
My sense of touch has pretty much disappeared, and I could only feel a little numbness in them.

マッサージしてみても、なかなか感覚は戻らなかった。%K%P
I even tried massaging them, but the feeling wouldn't return.

黄泉木は、バケツの中の水がぬるま湯の状態になると火を弱めた。%K%P
When the water in the bucket became lukewarm, Yomogi lowered the flame strength.

タオルをお湯に浸し、それを１枚ずつ私達に手渡してくる。%K%P
Dipping some towels in the hot water, Yomogi handed one to each of us.

黄泉木「顔に巻いておくんだ。凍傷になりやすいのは、手足と、耳、鼻だからね」%K%P
Wrap that towel around your face. Along with your limbs, your ears and nose are highly susceptible to frostbite.

言われた通り、耳と鼻を覆うようにタオルを巻きつけた。%K%P
Doing as he'd told us, I wrapped the towel around my head as if concealing my ears and nose.

なんだか傍目からみるとけっこう間抜けだ。%K%P
To an outsider, we probably looked pretty silly right now.

黄泉木「バケツに手足をつっこめ」%K%P
Submerge your hands and feet in the bucket.

黄泉木「火を強めるなよ。ぬるま湯でゆっくり温めるんだ」%K%P
Don't raise the flame. Warm your hands slowly in the water.

私と黛は、互いに気まずそうに目を合わせてから、バケツの中に手足を入れた。%K%P
After looking at each other awkwardly, Mayuzumi and I both placed our hands and feet in the bucket.

温かい感覚がじわっと広がっていく。%K%P
The feeling of warmth steadily spread.

生き返るようだ……。%K%P
As if they were being revived....

バケツはそれほど大きくなかったので、黛と肩を寄せ合う形になった。%K%P
As the bucket wasn't very large, Mayuzumi and I were sitting in a position where our shoulders met.

４つの手と４つの足がバケツの中で窮屈にぶつかり合う。%K%P
Our four limbs were bumping into each other inside the narrow bucket.

黛「ちょっと、もっとあっち行ってよ……」%K%P

こころ「そんなこと……言われても……」%K%P

黛「ねえ……なんか、かゆくない……？」%K%P
Hey... don't you feel kind of itchy...?

手足が温まってくると、今度はじわじわとかゆみが出てきた。%K%P
Having been warmed up, my hands and feet were gradually becoming itchy.

それに、ところどころに水ぶくれが出来てきている。%K%P
On top of that, blisters started to form here and there.

黄泉木「かゆいからって引っ掻くなよ」%K%P

黄泉木は一方で、ゆにのわきの下にも温かいタオルを差し入れた。%K%P
Yomogi also placed a warm towel underneath one of Yuni's armpits.

そして上から何枚も毛布を重ねる。%K%P
He then piled on several blankets on top of him.

ゆには意識を失っているようだった。%K%P
It seemed that Yuni had lost consciousness.

その小さな身体は、真っ白だ。%K%P
His small body had turned completely white.

I'm certain that Yuni was shivering from the cold until moments ago, but now his entire body lay unmoving.

こころ「それ……どういう意味ですか……？」%K%P

黄泉木「かなり重症なんだ……」%K%P
His condition has deteriorated...

黄泉木「低体温症は、ひどくなると震えが止まるんだ。そうなると応急処置じゃどうにもならない」%K%P
With hypothermia, the body stops shivering when it becomes serious. If that happens, then you won't be able to do anything with only emergency measures.

こころ「マッサージとか、した方がいいんじゃ？」%K%P
Wouldn't it be better to massage him or something like that?

黄泉木「ダメだ。低体温症の場合はマッサージは逆効果だ」%K%P
Absolutely not. To someone with hypothermia, a massage would have the opposite effect.

黄泉木「マッサージすると、身体の末端の冷えた血液が心臓に流れ込む」%K%P

黄泉木は照れ臭そうに肩をすくめた。%K%P
Embarrassed, Yomogi only shrugged his shoulders.

黄泉木「運命だったんだよ。僕がここにいる、ってことは」%K%P

...Fate?

ゆにを見る黄泉木の目は、とても優しそうだった。%K%P
Yomogi's eyes looked very gentle as he stared at Yuni.

黄泉木「あのとき、息子を助けてやれなかった僕に与えられた、罪滅ぼしの機会だったのかもしれない」%K%P
This may be a chance given to me to atone for my sin of not being able to protect my son at that time.

黄泉木「この子を助けることで、僕自身も救われるんだ」%K%P
By saving this child, I feel like I'll be saved myself.

３０分もすると、私の手足の感覚はすっかり元に戻った。%K%P
After thirty minutes, the feeling in my hands and feet had completely returned.

私と黄泉木は、交代でゆにの手足をぬるま湯で温めてあげた。%K%P
Yomogi and I took turns warming Yuni's hands and feet in warm water.

ゆにの顔の血色も、いくらかマシになった。%K%P
Yuni's complexion became much better as well.

黄泉木の指示で、私はゆにの身体を抱きしめて、毛布にくるまった。%K%P
As Yomogi had instructed, I was hugging Yuni's body, rolled up inside a blanket.

ドラマだけの話だと思っていたが、添い寝というのはそれなりに効果があるらしい。%K%P
I had thought it was just something they said on TV,  but apparently lying with our bodies together was effective in itself.

ゆにの身体の冷たさが、肌を直接通して伝わってくる。%K%P
The cold in Yuni's body was transmitted to me through his skin.

私は必死に祈りながら、ゆにを抱きしめ続けた。%K%P
I desperately prayed as I kept holding Yuni.

私の体温なら、いくらでも分けてあげるから。%K%P
