- So I'm gonna break down the run into each splt and write down everything. Some of it is more for the 'future' if you want to keep pushing. But I hope this helps. (VoD you sent me - https://youtu.be/KorxVvALAQs?t=3702)
- A few overall notes:
- - Main thing to practice is - Menus, Mashing and Shopping. Along with trying to get more of the guide. HP strats and stuff are great to have up, but if a fight is always the same memorize it. And get it memorized.
- - Doing races are a great way to get better. There is a pokemon race discord you can find opponets or I'm sure if you ask people they would race (Top runners like Hwang might not if they aren't currently running the game it's hard to switch games when these people are grinding WRs)
- Nido:
- - 0:00:14 - Your naming is slow, you want to time a + (delayed) start. I don't tend to push runners to time things but both names are so early on that you should start trying to do the naming instantly.
- - 0:01:47 - You enter the rival fight about 3 and a half seconds behind WR, largely because you are being an entertaining streamer you, but I just wanted to show you kinda 'why' you are so far off the WR end time. In the first 2 minutes there is already ~2 seconds lost to just efficient mashing. Now mashing is a HUGE thing and there are minor optimizations, but the short answer to get probably a 2 minute PB on mashing alone is 'Learn the number of text boxes).
- Alright here is the long answer on mashing: Mashing as you know is A and B alternating, BUT clearing the final text box in a 'section' with B saves a few frames. (These are the text boxes without arrows) So knowing that if you were to mash at a high 'skill' level you would want to clear everyone of these text boxes with B. So top runners will plan to time the last text box.
- Mashing can be super hard to do consistently and the answer is don't mashes mindlessly, start mashing near the end of textboxes or 'speedrun' near the end. You want to basically focus on only the clears. To do this well, you will need to know eactly how many text boxes there are in every part of the game. Oak Parcel quest, Blaine's Gym question, all of it.
- - 0:01:54 - During the whole run you are losing some time to selecting moves, Your first move here is slow to get to tailwhip. So you want to hold A as squirtle cries, THEN you time Up + (delayed) A. It doesn't have to be perfect but you want to buffer the opening of the FIGHT menu, then time the move select. Speed tech is better to learn from Hwang imo, but just want to call it out. These tiny things add up quickly but tbh they are not worth stressing over super early.
- - 0:04:45 - You keep going around this ledge hop, just take the ledge hop you are losing like 20 frames probably. (The reason we avoid a ledge hop a few seconds later is you need to walk that direction anyways so you might as well skip the ledge jump. This ledge jump you are 'skipping' is just taking 2 extra steps.) [Also you literally said that after lol so you already know]
- - 0:05:52 - I loaded up the game and started talking to Oak the same time you did, I saved about half a second on your mashing just in these few seconds. I am not a grade A masher either so just something to think about: https://imgur.com/a/pfQdCer
- - 0:06:50 - You can actually 'buffer' closing the shop. After you get the 'thank you' text after buying something you will need to press B to close it, well hold B when you close the thank you text then press and hold I direction (like tossing the yolo ball), this will close the 'shop' part, then just press B again to close the final menu prompt.
- - 0:07:30 - Just a note your nido appeared textbox clear was on the second half of the 8 frame windows. If that was paras you would have missed it.
- Brock:
- - 0:09:12 - You get the Tree potion and the hidden potion to afford all 5 pokeballs. Smart :)
- Route 3:
- - 0:16:00 - You got wrapped at 9HP after tail whip, so you should have healed at 5 HP. Wrap will ALWAYS last 2-5 turns, so you want to take that turn 2 to heal. You basically gave Ekans a free chance to wrap you again. [Wrap odds are 3/8 for 2 or 3 turns and 1/8 for 4 or 5 turns]
- - 0:16:42 - You said you should have tackled there and that was wrong for three reasons: 1) Tackle is 95% acc so giving a 'wrapped' a chance is generally not worth it. 2) Leer missed actually, so no badge boost was applied. 3) Tackle there isn't a kill iirc :)
- - 0:17:30 - Not healing for Caterpie was a good play, feel free to take risks to save time if you are behind. But the here is the key part to taking risk. You have to know the risk and need to actually consider if it is actually worth it. Don't risk things without considering if it is worth it.
- Moon:
- - 0:25:00 - Your menus are already getting better, Menus and Mashing and general knowledge will get you far.
- Nugget:
- - 0:29:00 - We were talking about sand attack, it's helpful knowing how Sand Attack works in gen 1. Sand attack is 2 / (2 + number of sand attacks). So if you have 0 sand attacks done your acc is 100%. If you have 1 sand attack your acc is 2/3 = 66%. and your acc is 50% after only 2 sand attacks.
- - 0:31:00 - Your IT mashing/buffering could improve, If you want to get better at IT right now just try to mashing a little more effectively. Eventually in the future learning IT buffering is really fun but it's a lot of memorizing and practice. I recommend just doing a save state with IT after the rival fight and do bride a few times. Just focus on mashing well.
- Misty:
- - 0:35:00 - Is there a reason you aren't using the auto splitter? It's SUPER easy to do. Just edit your splits and there should be a checkbox to enable the auto splitter. (Then you can config it more if you want)
- - 0:36:29 - When you are walking towards a trainer like this last Lass you want to go up first, then right. Then you can buffer the A to talking to them. You are bonking them and not buffer the a to talk so this is costing at least 5 frames.
- - 0:38:21 - So this is purposefully left out of the beginner guide, so people don't loss all their potions when they are learning but in the RC and Escape Rope menu the optimal strat is actually to potion to 55+ HP to live Misty. This saves a bit of time over using the center. I would add this to your notes but be careful. Losing all your potions messes with the bag so you need to fill the slot if you lose them all.
- Surge:
- - 0:42:20 - Your movement in the grass was wonky but I think you knew that lol
- - 0:42:40 - There are a lot of 'red bar' strats for this split all the way through the big shopping trip. Here are a few things that you can ask more questions on if you want:
- * If you are in red bar and can die to QAs in the route before SS Ann you actually want to fight the male junior before the female junior guarding town. This is because raticate has a worse QA crit and you get a level out of it making the 3 pidgeys safer.
- * The gentleman candy strat if HP < 9 and you have IT, you did this strat (which is safety so keep doing it if you want) but the big thing for this candy is you will always 1 shot the oddish in rock tunnel so you never have to save for that fight.
- * Rock Tunnel redbar setups can be found here: https://pastebin.com/HgyuMvyr - I would learn everything in this paste from 'POST-MISTY' through 'LAVENDER RIVAL' Fly split is the 'safest' red bar gains you can play towards. The other big red bar time saves are pretty risky.
- Fly:
- - 0:51:00 - This menu you can't 'fast scroll' the swap (I will mention this later) but you should hold down after you press select, you want to get use to timing your scrolls vs mashing down like you did here.
- - 0:51:30 - These small mistakes are just an example as to why menus are a great thing to practice. They add up so quickly since every mistake is relatively slow.
- - 0:53:07 - Using BB turn 1 is a mistake :) If you are level 29 you want to thrash this fight, since venonat will always die to thrash.
- - 0:53:42 - It's technically better to go all the way to the right and avoid the hop.
- - 0:53:50 - You only have invincibility for 1 tile, so you want to hold down, during the load screen for moon, then the moment you see moon loaded you want to hold start. This should buffer down then the menu open.
- - 0:54:05 - So you can buffer the close of this menu! after you press b to close the 'ITEM' part of the menu, you want reapply B with a start. If you need to close 3 things (like after teaching a move) you do - Hold B - reapply B with a direction, close final menu with START. (Hard to explain I can make a video for you if you want)
- - 0:54:20 - You accidently went for the right redbar strat here, Normally without the candy you would have misplayed since you were at 27 HP but you are a level higher for cuebone if you candy so it was right. So nice!
- - 0:58:22 - Make a command for your bot about the VIP process and the discord role stuff :P
- - 0:59:20 - You already know the shopping was wrong but fun fact you kinda did yellows old shopping strats lol.
- - 1:01:20 - I'm not gonna focus on the shopping cause it was wonky BUT you have a lot of money left over. If you normally have that much left double check wat if off.
- Flute:
- - 1:01:50 - THIS MENU IS SUPER TECHNICAL. This is a great menu to practice and learn fast scrolling and all the tricks on like double input.
- * Fast scroll, is as you enter the ITEM menu if you hold down at the right time (or after anything like hitting select to swap) your cursor will scroll at the fastest pace right away. It's a handy and makes menus actually more consistent since the timing is always the same. You can even add audio cues to your menus if you practice enough.
- * Double input, in some area it's worth in red to double input if you press A + UP/DOWN correctly you know you can move the cursor and press a on the next item. Cool, take that idea to the next level, If you do UP/DOWN + (delayed) LEFT/RIGHT + (delayed) A you will double move the cursor and use a. NOTE: If you press A too soon you will triple input instead of double so learning the timing is important
- - 1:03:00 - So you risked dying to Ivysaur again lol. The HP strats I linked before covers this fight BUT there is 1 change I would do - 7 HP heal on growlithe.
- - 1:06:00 - Just a fun fact you can avoid the heal pad by fighting a Haunter trainer. It is NOT worth it, but some alt main poke do it to keep red bar.
- - 1:07:00 - Is there a reason you aren't swapping slot 4 with super repels here? The guide has the swap and then doll.
- Koga:
- - 1:11:38 - You want to talk to the rocket before taking the warp pad, you are giving yourself a '!' cutscene but not talking to him first.
- - 1:13:00 - DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS FOR A LONG TIME BUT THIS IS WHERE YOU DO SILPH RED BAR STRATS WHEN YOU LEARN THEM. (Probably when you get closer to 1:50 it'd be worth learning)
- - 1:14:30 - If you do menu before the fight (This part is correct :) ) Take the warp then menu. Menuing before you turn in a room will 'eat' the turn frame saving like 4 frames.
- - 1:17:12 - You can fast scroll this elevator.
- - 1:18:12 - Cool yeah you needed to swap super repels up in the ghost fight :)
- - 1:19:30 - Yup you do super repel WAY out here. Long story short you can not get through safari with only 1 super so might as well do it when you have to menu.
- - 1:20:00 - This movement is wrong and you are cutting the wrong tree (Watch WR for this part)
- - 1:21:30 - Walk right once then up to buffer talking to him (Same step count)
- - 1:22:00 - Your late game is way more shaky than your early game practice will help :)
- - 1:22:15 - There is actually a super easy way to save a super repel, if you ever mess up, here is the fix:
- * Wait to super repel in Victory road until you enter the cave. You only have to yolo 2 tiles of grass. You can get through the cave with only 2 super repels but it's TIGHT, so don't miss step.
- Erika:
- - 1:26:33 - Go to the left near the water not the right. Way less steps.
- - 1:27:40 - So this repel is normally used in the mansion you PLAN on using this repel to free up a slot for the Blizzard and secret key. So this is why you still don't get a Gym Leader TM and are still a repel down in Victory Road.
- Blaine:
- - Nothing to note good job :)
- Sabrina:
- - Nothing to note good job :)
- * Fun Fact I died TWICE to here in a race practice once: https://clips.twitch.tv/GracefulSillyAlpacaSwiftRage
- Giovani:
- - Nothing to note good job :)
- Lorelei:
- - 1:40:30 - Lorelei split is HIGHLY technical so this is a great place to practice and compare to WR or another runner.
- - 1:43:50 - You want to take a different path in the grass you only need to go through 2 grass tiles.
- - 1:44:14 - YOU FIXED YOUR REPELS PERFECT! Good going, yeah that is exactly how you fix your repels.
- - 1:44:30 - You are questioning repels so I'm just gonna walk through it incase this ever happens again. Optimal strats are using 3 super repels and this is only because there are two tiles of grass during the badge check. So the optimal play is just super once outside the cave when you get on the bike again. The other two are used during the cave. But if you have only 2 super repels you do what you did here, BUT you have like 4 tiles or error.
- - 1:47:00 - This is where you could yolo Lorelei when you get a better time don't do it unless you MAJOR need it.
- The rest of it:
- - NICE PB! Good job Dobbs keep at it and congrats on sub 2!
