Body: Robert Geiss’s road to success was highly unorthodox one. At the young age, he refused to attend school, stating that a person who wants to make money can’t afford to waste time by sitting in a classroom all day. Of course, the exact plan on making the money was still unclear to everyone around him, Geiss himself included, but Robert figured that for a while, the intent was enough. His father offered him a job as a tradesman, but Robert refused and opted for a holiday in Spain instead.
It was there where he struck gold. He bought a pair of fitness trousers which he really liked. He later described the purchase as one of the best things he had ever done. Robert was so enamored with the design that he decided to make them himself. His newly started company, established in 1985, was called the Uncle Sam. The garments it produced sold like hot cakes and the demand soon outpaced the supply. Instead of increasing production, Geiss had another brilliant idea. He would import his clothes from Turkey where he bought them for 10 DM a piece and sell them in Germany at the 49 DM, making quite a handy profit.
The news of the Uncle Sam’s success soon spread and he started to receive offers for a buyout. At first, he rejected them, but when an anonymous buyer offered him 140 million marks for the company, he quickly agreed to a sellout. Robert spent the next ten years living a lavish lifestyle in Monaco with his wife Carmen. Eventually, he came back to Germany, bored out of his mind. Appearance in TV reality show Die Geissens (The Geissens) made him very popular and he decided to go back to his roots and start making clothes again, this time under a new label he called Roberto Geissini. So far, the new brand has had some success, but it remains to bee seen if it will replicate the success of Uncle Sam.
