Neo's expression turned innocent, even as she shrugged her shoulders and grinned. Wherever she'd been before this, she clearly wasn't going to tell him. Her clothes are a little more ruffled than usual, he noted, not to mention her boots have dust across the bottom.

"He got in a fight?" Neo paused and looked towards the ceiling, before she shrugged and nodded. "What about you?"

Okay, that smirk he recognised. It was the one that said she'd trounced someone and had a damn good time doing it.

"Yang Xiao-Long was badly hurt. She isn't dead-" Glynda quickly added when Jaune's eyes widened and it looked like he might tackle the General aside. "She's recovering even now. She woke up yesterday, but it was a close call. A very close call."

[...]

"It's about the person who did this to me," Yang whispered, pointing down at her body. "I thought… I thought you should know who it was I ended up fighting on the train." Yang turned to her sister, "Can you give us a sec, Ruby?"

Ruby looked confused but nodded, slipping off her stool and stepping outside. Jaune wished he could go with her, as the door slowly closed. Then again, he wasn't sure his legs were up to moving just yet.

"So who did this to you?"

He wished he'd never asked.

Jaune left the infirmary feeling like a zombie. Yang had tried to break the news lightly, but it still struck him with the force of a freight train. Thankfully she'd taken his expression at face value, no doubt understanding that the sudden knowledge that his lover was a criminal would shake him.

He'd taken hold of that excuse as best he could and run with it, apologising and backing out of the room, all the while saying he didn't know where Neo was and hadn't seen her before he left Beacon. It was the truth in a sense, since Neo could have been anywhere at this point and she had been absent in the run-up to him leaving the school. But that didn't do much for his emotions, which were flip-flopping inside of him at that very moment.

Neo… she had tried to kill Yang.
