       约某大保险公司职员巴克斯特，为了能得到上司的青睐，把自己的公寓定时出租给几个上司，让他们与情妇鬼魂，而自己则到处游荡。每逢风雨天，他更感到痛苦难熬。后来，巴克斯特搭救了一位受上司欺骗想自杀的电梯女工弗兰，并真心地爱上她。他出租公寓给上司的事引起弗兰的猜疑。他为了爱情，毅然拒绝了上司再次租房的要求。圣诞之夜，巴克斯特终于得到了弗兰的谅解，两人共度良宵。
