  1. Again it was decided to move the hospital;
  2. and
  3. again, before nightfall, the work was completed,
  4. including a still stronger and thicker boma. When
  5. the patients had been moved,I had a covered
  6. goods-wagon placed in a favourable position on a
  7. siding which ran close to the site which had just
  8. been abandoned, and in this Brock and I arranged
  9. to sit up that night. We left a couple of tents still
  10. standing within the enclosure, and also tied up a few
  11. cattle in it as bait for the lions, who had been seen
  12. in no less than three different places in the
  13. neighbourhood during the afternoon (April 23).
  14. Four miles from Tsavo they had attempted to seize
  15. a coolie who was walking along the line. Fortu-

  17. nately, however, he had just time to escape up a
  18. tree, where he remained, more dead than alive,
  19. until he was rescued by the Traffic Manager, who
  20. caught sight of him from a passing train. They
  21. next appeared close to Tsavo Station, and a couple
  22. of hours later some workmen saw one of the lions
  23. stalking Dr. Brock as he was returning about dusk
  24. from the hospital.
  25. In accordance with our plan, the doctor and I set
  26. out after dinner for the goods-wagon, which was
  27. about a mile away from our hut. In the light of
  28. subsequent events, we did a very foolish thing in
  29. taking up our position so late
  30. ; nevertheless, we
  31. reached our destination in safety, and settled down
  32. to our watch about ten o'clock. We had the lower
  33. half of the door of the wagon closed, while the
  34. upper half was left wide open for observation: and
  35. we faced, of course, in the direction of the abandoned
  36. bovia, which, however, we were unable to see in the
  37. inky darkness. For an hour or two everything was
  38. quiet, and the deadly silence was becoming very
  39. monotonous and oppressive, when suddenly, to our
  40. right, a dry twig snapped, and we knew that an
  41. animal of some sort was about. Soon afterwards
  42. we heard a dull thud, as if some heavy body had
  43. jumped over the boma. The cattle, too, became
  44. very uneasy, and we could hear them moving about
  45. restlessly. Then again came dead silence. At this juncture I proposed to my companion
  46. that I should get out of the wagon and lie on the
  47. ground close to it, as I could see better in that
  48. position should the lion come in our direction with
  49. his prey. Brock, however, persuaded me to remain
  50. where I was
  51. and a few seconds afterwards I was
  52. ;
  53. heartily glad that I had taken his advice, for at that
  54. very moment one of the man-eaters although we
  55. did not know it was quietly stalking us, and was
  56. even then almost within springing distance.
