A lot of adult life in the cult is spent on long caravan rides around the world to dispense justice and the like
They picked up venia on one such caravan- locals were going missing and people were suspecting a local coven, for various reasons.
The spiral was ostensibly told to murder the cults because of personal local tensions but.
Cursory investigation revealed a different reason for the disappearences, which surprised traced back to the guy treating the cult like thugs for hire.
In parts of the world where the cult is less popular they're more or less referred to as Traitor Sellswords
Because they'll go along with people they know are bads' plans just so they can turn around and pronounce them guilty.
So a lot of people just assume they're some sort of extortionist group who kill anyone who refuses to get extorted for work.
They obviously don't actually HELP the bad guys any- mostly they do it just to root out the full extent of a person's actions
Also, the quality of rifles goes up astronomically the higher up the hierarchy of the Spiral you go- devotion leads to better rifles as you spend time on them. Except for at the second highest position in the cult, which is Second Powdersaint.
The second powdersaint at current is a raven wildkin who goes by Quigs, and has been using the same old beat up pile of junk since initiation. It's named Quorum, though most people who haven't seen it in action call is Leadthrower, which is kind of an insult. It suggests the gun is little better than throwing bullets at people, and is an embarassment. To outside eyes, it's more work than it's worth to even maintain the thing. But Quigs gets by because rather than spend all their time replacing mechanisms and tweaking new additions, they spent all their time learning how the weapon behaves at present.
It usually only manages one shot before breaking, and needing a full repair. As a result, that single shot is devilishly accurate, and Quigs is a legendary marksman as far as the cult goes. They're not a real legend though because their rifle's condition leads to it being a last,last,last resort.
As a result they're instead a well traveled, well spoken, truly kind individual who can talk their way out of a hundred problems in the time it takes a lesser man to shoot their way out of ten.
And their rank comes not from their ability as a killer but SPECIFICALLY due to this thoughtful, methodical, kindhearted nature.
Their First Powdersaint is a dark skinned fire haired woman named Josephine Heller, and she's First Powdersaint by virtue of being Quigs, but unrestrained in shot count.
