After talking for a while, they decided to return to sleep.

And then eyes appeared.

“What?!”

Where there was nothing but Izelda, eyes appeared in a space that shouldn't have accepted them. Lines ran through empty space, opening vertically to reveal them. The movement was like that of eyelids lifting. They continued to appear one after another, filling the entire space.

“What is going on?”

“How did they get here?”

“You are the boy on the ship...”

It was little more than a hunch, but Izelda felt something of the boy’s atmosphere from them.

“I see. So you have come to kill me.”

“I never expected someone to be able to find this place.”

“But what of it?”

“Did you think this was my core?”

“Killing me here will change nothing.”

“I exist all throughout the world.”

“I do not exist in the shape of a single person alone.”

“There are versions of myself that are so small as to be invisible, like tiny insects.”

“The power that allowed you to reach this place is astounding. I recognize that.”

“But did you think such a thing would be sufficient to annihilate me?”

“No matter how many of me you kill, there will always be more.”

“I am beyond numbering. I am everywhere.”

“No matter how many you kill, if there is a survivor, they will multiply from there.”

“I am already prepared to face great losses.”

The storage area was important, but it was not the foundation of his plan. Even if every Izelda stored here was killed, it would not be a problem in the long run. Izelda had constructed a system to multiply and disperse himself all but infinitely, with sufficient redundancy to make himself, for all intents and purposes, immortal.

Izelda checked the condition of the world, but there was no reply. That was odd. He was constantly in a state of mutual observation. In order to deal with the most unlikely of occurrences, a warning should have been sent if anything had happened. But no warning had come. The Izeldas in the world were silent.

What did that mean? He didn’t understand. The simple answer to that question was right in front of him, but he couldn’t face it.

“What is happening?”

“I should be affixed to a million people, even among humans only...”

“If even a single one of them, one single creature were alive, I would have received an alert.”

“Absurd...the large majority were ordinary humans and the like without my consciousness​...”

Most people who possessed Izelda’s factor lived their whole lives without incident. That was both as a precaution against danger and to facilitate the development of diverse characteristics based on different environments. There should have been no way to know that Izelda existed within them, nor any way to check. And even if it was somehow discovered, they were just ordinary humans. No ordinary person would be able to kill someone just because they had the potential to be dangerous. Izelda had that much faith in humanity. He had thought that humanity was, at its core, good.

But this boy was different. However he had found them, however he had accomplished it, every single Izelda in the world had been killed. Not only over a million humans, but also livestock, wild animals, insects, plants, and even infinitesimal​ bacteria— everything that had contained his factor was massacre​d.

ひとしきり 語り合っ た イゼルダ は、 再び 眠り に つこ う と し た。 　 その 時、 目 が 現れ た。 「何!?」 　 イゼルダ 以外 には 何 も ない、 受け入れ ない はず の 空間 に 瞳 が 現れ た の だ。 　 空間 に 線 が 走り、 それ が 上下 に 開い て いく。 　 それ は まぶた が 開く よう な 動き で あり、 現れ た のは 切れ長 の 目 だっ た。 　 それ は 次々 と 現れ、 空間 を 埋め 尽くし て いく。 「何だ、 これ は……」 「どう やっ て ここ へ……」 「貴様…… 船 に い た 男 か」 　 それ は 勘 でしか なかっ た が、 イゼルダ は その 目 から 少年 の 雰囲気 を 感じ取っ た の だ。 「なるほど。 私 を 殺し に き た か」 「ここ を 探り当てる とはな」 「だが、 それ が どう し た」 「ここ が 中枢 だ とでも 思っ た か」「ここ に いる 私 が 死ん だ ところ でさほどの 意味 は ない」 「私 は 世界中 に いる」 「それ は 人 の 形態 を 取っ て いる もの だけでは ない」 「目 に 見え ない ほどの 微少 な、 蟲 の ごとき もの で すら が、 私 だ」 「ここ にまで やってくる その 力 は 驚異的 だ。 それ は 認めよ う」 「だが、 その 程度 の 力 で 私 を 滅ぼせる とでも 思っ て いる のか」 「いくら 殺し た ところ で 私 を 殺し 尽くす こと など でき ない」 「私 は いくら でも いる。 世界中 に 分散 し て いる の だ」 「どれ ほど 殺そ う と、 生き残り が いれ ば そこ から 増え て いく」 「大量 絶滅 すら も 想定 済み だ」 　 ここ は 重要 な 保管 庫 では ある。 　 だが 中枢 では ない。 　 たとえ ここ に いる 者 が 全て 殺さ れ た として も、 問題 は ない の だ。 　 自分 を 無数 に 分散 し、 冗長 性 を 確保 し、 常に お互い を 複製 し 合う 不死 の システム が 構築 さ れ て いる。 　 イゼルダ は、 現世 の 状況 を 確認 し た。 　 応答 は、 返っ て こ なかっ た。異常 だっ た。 　 イゼルダ は 相互 監視 を 行っ て いる。 万が一 の 事態 に 対応 する ため で あり、 何 かが あれ ば すぐ に 警報 が 発せ られる はず なの だ。 　 なのに、 警報 は なく、 現世 の イゼルダ は 沈黙 し て いる。 　 それ が 何 を 意味 する のか。 イゼルダ には 理解 でき なかっ た。 　 簡単 で 当たり前 の 答え が すぐ そこ に ある のに、 それ を 直視 する こと が でき なかっ た の だ。 「どういう こと だ……」 「私 は、 人間 だけでも 百万 人 は い た はず だ……」 「一人 でも、 一匹 でも 生き残っ て いれ ば アラート が ある はず」 「馬鹿 な……。 ほとんど は、 私 の 意識 など ない ただ の 人間 だ ぞ……」 　 イゼルダ の 因子 を 持つ ほとんど の 者 は、 何事 も なく 一生 を 終える。 　 それ は 危機 に 備え ての 余剰 と、 偶然 が 生み出す 多様 性 の ため に 用意 さ れ て い た。 　 それ が イゼルダ を 内包 し て いる など わかる はず も なく、 調べる 方法 も ない。 　 万が一 気付か れ た として も、 その 時点 では ただ の 人間 でしか ない の だ。 　 普通 の 人間 なら、 潜在的 に 危険 かも しれ ない という 程度 の こと で 殺す こと は でき ない だろ う。 　 その 点 で イゼルダ は 人類 を 信頼 し て い た。 総体 として の 人類 は 善 で ある だろ う と 考え て い た の だ。だが。 　 この 少年 は 違っ た。 　 どの よう に 知っ た のか、 どう やっ て やっ た のかは わから ない が、 現世 の イゼルダ を 殺し 尽くし た の だ。 　 百万 を 超える 人類 は もとより、 家畜 や 野生 動物、 虫 や 植物、 微少 な 細菌 に いたる まで、 イゼルダ の 因子 を 含む もの を 全て 殺戮 し た。
