Originally purchased during an arms race between Argentina and Chile, with her sister ships ultimately sold off prior to delivery due to a cooling of tensions between the two nations and budgetary limitations for the Argentine Navy. Named after General Manuel Belgrano, the founding father of Argentina. Served in the Argentine Navy until 1948, first as a battleship, then as a training vessel.
