- Task 3: Integrated reading/listening/speaking
- ---
- - 45 seconds to read a campus announcement (usually about a change or an event)
- - Listen to a conversation about the announcement.
- - Read and hear the question.
- - 30 seconds to prepare your response
- - 60 seconds to record your response
- ---
- DELTA p. 286 - Take 45 seconds to read the announcement and note the important information in it
- First option: expand the main cafeteria, close the additional eating areas
- Second option: close the main cafeteria, add additional eating areas
- Listen to to the conversation and take notes.
- Who has the opinion? - the man
- What is his opinion? - option 2 (close the cafeteria, open additional eating areas)
- Why?
- - Main cafeteria is overcrowded, no place to sit, no place for his bike, long lines.
- - Multiple eating areas are more convenient for classes all over, less crowded, more food options
- “The man expresses his opinion about the campus food service. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.”
- ---
- A response can be organized like this:
- 1 Introduction: briefly summarize the text
- 2 Thesis: state the speaker’s opinion
- 3 Lead-in (optional): “He gives two reasons for this opinion.”
- 4 First reason: “The first reason is that the main cafeteria is always overcrowded.”
- 5 Detail/example: “There are always long lines and no place to sit, and there’s no place to park his bike.”
- 6 Second reason: “The second reason is…”
- 7 Detail/example: “For example, he likes the idea of a BBQ place on campus.”
- (8 Conclusion - if you have time: “Because the main cafeteria… and…, the man thinks…”

- Homework (optional): if you want more detailed feedback on yesterday’s writing (more than just a score and a sentence or two), email me this weekend with your own self-evaluation. What did you do well? What did you do badly? If you have done writing before, did you improve on things you had problems with last time? What will you try to work on for your next writing?
