- 1. Who We Are
- Auto Page Translator is a Chrome browser extension that automatically detects the language of webpages and translates them into English. This Privacy Policy explains what information the extension accesses, how it is used, and your rights as a user.
- 2. Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect, transmit, or store any of the following:
- Your browsing history or visited URLs
- The content of pages you visit (beyond what is sent to your chosen translation API)
- Personal identifiers such as name, email address, or IP address
- Device information or browser fingerprints
- Crash reports or usage analytics
- Any data for advertising, profiling, or tracking purposes
- 3. What the Extension Accesses Locally
- The extension reads the following data locally on your device only, solely to perform translation:
- Page URL — to check whether the domain is on your exclusion list and to display the hostname in the popup. Never transmitted to us.
- Page text content — extracted from the active tab to detect language and, when translation is triggered, sent to the translation API provider you have configured. This data goes directly from your browser to the API — we have no server in between.
- 4. Your Settings and API Keys
- Your preferences (auto-translate toggle, chosen provider, excluded domains) and any API keys you enter are stored using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync API. This means:
- Data is stored locally in your browser and optionally synced across your signed-in Chrome devices by Google's own infrastructure — subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
- We never see, access, or transmit your API keys.
- You can clear all stored data at any time by removing the extension from Chrome.
- 5. Third-Party Translation Providers
- When translation is triggered, the text of the webpage is sent to the API provider you have chosen in settings. We have no control over how these providers handle data. Please review their respective privacy policies:
- Free Google Translate (default) — Google Privacy Policy
- Google Cloud Translation API — Google Cloud Privacy Notice
- DeepL API — DeepL Privacy Policy
- OpenAI API — OpenAI Privacy Policy
- If you do not wish any page content to be sent to external services, you can disable auto-translate and avoid using the "Translate Now" button.
- 6. Permissions Justification
- The extension requests only the permissions strictly necessary to function:
- storage — to save your preferences locally in Chrome.
- activeTab / tabs — to read the current page's URL and update the toolbar badge with the detected language code.
- scripting — to inject the translation script into pages that were open before the extension loaded.
- Host permissions (<all_urls>) — required so the content script can run on any website, since foreign-language pages can exist on any domain.
- 7. Children's Privacy
- The extension is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any data from children. The extension performs no user registration or account creation of any kind.
- 8. Changes to This Policy
- If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this URL with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
- 9. Contact
- If you have questions about this privacy policy, please contact us at: [email protected]
- This policy was last updated in June 2026.
