  1. once, a long time ago, there was a vux boy. he wasn't from a very good clan! but he was a good person, and clever, more clever than all his hatchsibling.
  2.
  3. but even though he was clever, his clan was going broke!
  4.
  5. so he said to his clanmother, "dear clanmama, i am going to go find a fortune, and bring it back, and make our clan respectable again."
  6.
  7. and since she knew he was clever, she let him go, with just a few coins, a sword, and a net.
  8.
  9. when he left, he went to the sea, and dove in, because he had a plan; there were stories of a great demon living in the sea, you see, and the demon was rich in those stories.
  10.
  11. and since he was so clever, he was sure that he could outsmart the demon.
  12.
  13. um... so, he found the demon, so deep in the water it made his gills and tendrils ache.
  14.
  15. and the demon bade him stop, or else be eaten; but the boy, being clever, said that he would rather like being eaten, for surely it would be warm and comfortable in the demon's belly. And the demon, seeing that the boy wasn't afraid of being punished, snarled.
  16.
  17. the demon, being as dull as its gold was bright, finally asked what the boy feared; and they boy thought, and said, finally, that he would hate to be given a great treasure, for there was no way he could swim to the surface if he could not use his arms, and he did rather miss looking at the stars.
  18.
  19. so with a great shout of triumph, the demon threw a chest brimming with jewels and jewlery to the boy, and the boy caught it; and as he said, he could not swim without his arms.
  20. which is why he tied the net around the chest, and slung it across his back, and swam away like a shot, before the demon knew it was tricked!
  21.
  22. and the demon sent spirits after him, but the boy was clever, and knew that spirits must count whatever is thrown before them; and he tossed the coins his clan mother had given him in their way, the pennies sinking too quickly for them to count them without chasing them to the bottom of the sea.
  23.
  24. 00:09 lucidChthonia That's a weird disadvantage for spirits would have.
  25. 00:09 zoppaGavotte (sshhh! it makes just as much sense as people flying out of necks!)
  26. 00:10 tenaciousTheseus (She has a point)
  27.
  28. and the demon sent a great fish after him; but the boy fearlessly tread water as it approached, and when it burst towards him, it impaled itself on his sword that he had whipped up just in time.
  29.
  30. and then he was at the shore, and went home, bearing treasures that brought his clan back into good standing and riches!
  31.
  32. and i think he became clanfasted to the prettiest vux girl in the district but that stuff is just silly fluff, she doesn't even show up anywhere else in the story.
  33.
  34. the end!
