Both are identical, the SFGate one links to the original on The Wayward Home.

SFGate is ranking for 430 keywords and bringing in an estimated 250 page views.
The original article is ranking for 2,900 keywords and generating an estimated 21,000 page views a month.
Yup, it can.

I made two identical sites going after the same keywords niche, now I accidentally used the same articles on both sites (yes, accident), yet both ranked quite good. The original ranked better then the one with duplicate, but they still both ranked. When I removed the duplicate content from the worse-performing site, the ranks dropped of the map. Then I added unique content instead, and ranked even better.

So, duplicate content is better than having 0 content/words, but unique is still the best. Which seems kind of obvious.
It did not come as a surprise to me as we have had a lot of such topics lately :)

I have never understood why people think that duplicate content can't rank. Lots of misinformation spread by people who are either pushing their own product/service or who just don't know how things work.

Let me guess; they cloaked the real content and showed it for the Google bot? So real users saw Lorem ipsum, but Google saw 5,000 words of unique content about the actual subject(?)
Sometimes you can even outrank the original content
no cloaking was involved that's the main news. site was up and ranking for very long time.
Hmm that's interesting. Maybe they used something similar to that sitemap.xml exploit.
With strong links, even worse content would rank. But it's not expected to sustain.

No sir , Kyle being a friend of mine created and built the page using very specific placement of "keywords" in very relevant places with a perfect vector of content length ,lsi , and images to appeal to Google showing them what they wanted to see.

This was brought about because of a SEO Club competition on Facebook competing for the glory within the group. In my option this was a remarkable undermining of the algorithm and opened the eyes to the simplicity of ranking within local SERPS.

Much respect Stackz this "competition" really hurt our testing community but validated our testing.

We rank on search engines using real contents, those gibberish "alien" characters won't rank shit, you are wasting your time.
