  1. He also saw that it was a primitive barber shop. Its sparse furnishings consisted of a bench along one wall, a high-backed wooden chair in the centre, and a coat rack in the corner opposite the door. A rude shelf held a shaving mug and brush, a razor, a pair of shears and a dirty comb.

  3. A glitter came into the hunter’s narrowed eyes. He turned and slammed the door shut with a crash that shook the room. The noise echoed along the street. Two bandits darted out from their cover and ran toward the little shop, their eyes hot with anticipation. They flattened themselves at each side of the door, their guns cocked and levelled. One nodded and the other swung his foot and kicked the door wide open.

  5. Even in the shadowed room, there was no mistaking the tall figure, the brown poncho topped by the flat-crowned black hat. The bandits fired together from the doorway at point-blank range, the brown poncho jerking at the impact of their bullets.

  7. The hunter leaned around the concealing back of the barber chair and fired two close-spaced shots. Then he went to the coat rack where he had carefully draped his poncho and ruefully inspected the bullet holes. He put it on, donned his hat and stepped to the doorway.

  9. He turned the bodies over with the toe of his boot and studied the faces, frozen in expressions of utter astonishment. His lips moved in silent calculation and a look of pleasant surprise came over his face. He stepped over the two men and went out into the street.
