  30. [Vibrate...]
  31. Asashimo: C-
  32. Cool!
  33. Isonami: You really look the part now, Kishinami-chan!
  34. Kishinami: I myself was surprised.
  35.
  36. Kishi: To think I had such an ability!
  37. I've grown familiar with these sticks.
  38. Asa: Knew we could count on ya! We'll leave the beat to ya!
  39. Kishi: Right...
  40. [Whew]
  41. Shiki: [Gasp]
  42. ...
  43.
  44. Shiki: This is more like rock!
  45. (Still, cool.)

  57. The Story So Far: Shikinami and Isonami chase after their new goal, to "form a jazz band". Asashimo and Kishinami spot their recruitment poster and come to them. "New members already!" think Shikinami and Isonami, but Asashimo and Kishinami are looking for a jazz performance to cheer up their older sister Hamanami. On Isonami's proposal, the four of them decide to form a limited-time band.
  58.
  59. Akashi?: You OK with the drums, Kishinami?
  60. Kishi: Yes!
  61. This girl suits me just fine.
  62.
  63. Kishi: I should be able to become proficient.
  64. Akashi: I see, I see.
  65. You do have a good sense of rhythm, it might suit you.
  66.
  67. Akashi: That said,
  68. you can't just hit the drums however you want.
  69. That goes for any instrument - learn your fundamentals!
  70.
  71. Akashi: Also,
  72. your technique and instinct will sharpen as you gain experience and practice day to day.
  73. Kishi: I see.
  74.
  75. ---
  76.

  78. Shikinami - Second of the Ayanami-class destroyers, and the main character of this series. She's a good girl at heart but has trouble being honest with herself. She has an interest in the alto sax she found in the warehouse.
  79. Isonami - Ninth of the Fubuki-class destroyers. Enjoys taking photos while lost in thought. She joins the band to see more of the world.
  80. Ooyodo & Akashi - First of the Ooyodo-class light cruisers and an Akashi-class repair ship. Support Shikinami, since they dabbled with jazz in the past.
  81.
  82. Akashi: Lastly,
  83. For jazz drumming, instead of playing like that-
  84. Kishi: -
  85.
  86. Shiki: (Right, right...)
  87.
  88. Iso: Shikinami-chan, Shikinami-chan!
  89.
  90. Shiki: Ah!
  91. Isonami, you've decided on one too?
  92. Iso: ...yeah!
  93.
  94. Shiki: ...kinda big, huh.
  95. (Even though we're on the small side.)
  96. Iso: [Huff]
  97. I-It's okay, I can just manage to reach.
  98.
  99. Iso: I did a lot of thinking,
  100. and decided this instrument was right for me.
  101. Shiki: How come?
  102.
  103. ---
  104.
  105. Page 6
  106. Kishinami - Fifteenth of the Yuugumo-class destroyers. At a glance she leaves a calm and cool personality, but in fact she likes to actively enjoy whatever she does.
  107. Asashimo - Sixteenth of the Yuugumo-class destroyers. She's impatient and speaks roughly, but she deeply cares for those around her.
  108.
  109. Iso: Instruments with low pitch like the bass
  110. are said to be the "unsung" players.
  111.
  112. Iso: They're often thought of as plain,
  113. but they support the other instruments by providing a solid foundation of sound...
  114.
  115. Iso: A-And I... as a shipgirl...
  116. that's the kind of person I'd love to be...
  117.
  118. Iso: ... well,
  119. that's the explanation I decided on,
  120. but now that I've said it out loud it's kind of embarrassing!
  121. (Ehehe)
  122. Shiki: Sounds good to me.
  123. A good a reason to start as any.
  124.
  125. ---

  128. [Puh....
  129. Fwoh....
  130. Hoh...]
  131.
  132. [Fuu.... fwoh... fwu fwu....]
  133. [Huff...]
  134.
  135. Asa: [Gasp]
  136. I can't get any notes out~!
  137. Why!??
  138. [Flail]
  139. Shiki: Asashimo,
  140. I don't think you're blowing quite right?
  141.
  142. Asa: Blowing?
  143. Can't I just do it like a flute?
  144. (Thought it'd be pretty easy...)
  145. Shiki: I wouldn't be having so much trouble if that were the case.
  146.
  147. Asa: Damn!
  148. [Huff]
  149. Then I'll just have to blow even harder...
  150.
  151. ---
  152.
  153. Page 8
  154. Ooyodo: You can't just rely on power alone, Asashimo-san.
  155. [Stare]
  156. Asa: Pwoh!?
  157.
  158. Asaa: Ohh, Oyodoooo!?
  159. (Don't sneak up on me!)
  160. [Ba-dump, ba-dump]
  161. Ooyodo: If you aren't getting any sound, take the mouthpiece like this...
  162. [Click clack...]
  163.
  164. Asa: "Mouth"...?
  165. Ooyodo: This part here.
  166. Start practicing with just this.
  167. (Like a sax, right?)
  168. <-- Here
  169.
  170. Ooyodo: The trumpet
  171. is an instrument that produces sound from the vibration of the lips.
  172. Asa: [Vibrate]
  173. [Pffft]
  174.
  175. ---
  176.
  177. Page 9
  178. Ooyodo: Also,
  179. The other important parts to producing sound are,
  180. how you breathe, the shape of your lips, and using the right amount of force.
  181. (Your lips should be shaped almost as if you were whistling, so just think of that while blowing.)
  182. Asa: Like this?
  183.
  184. Ooyodo: Now keep all of that in mind, and try and get a sense of how to make a sound
  185. Asa: ...
  186.
  187. Asa: [N...
  188. Note]
  189. !!
  190.
  191. Shiki: O-
  192. Ohhhh!
  193. (That was really loud!)
  194. Ooyodo: Please remember that sensation.
  195.
  196. ---
  197.
  198. Page 10
  199. Asa: Hey, why're ya here anyway, Ooyodo?
  200. Ooyodo: !
  201. That's right.
  202.
  203. Ooyodo: Akashi asked me to bring this here.
  204. [Pass]
  205. Shiki: Ah.
  206. This is, a band's score...?
  207.
  208. Asa: What's that?
  209. Ooyodo: It's a collection of the sheet music for all of the parts put together.
  210. Asa: Hmmmm?
  211.
  212. Ooyodo: We figured you'd need one to put together a band.
  213. You already have the members, after all.
  214.
  215. Ooyodo: Fufu.
  216. It sure has gotten lively.
  217. Kishi: [Pitter-patter]
  218. Shiki: Y-Yeah...
  219.
  220. Asa: Ooyodo,
  221. Kishinami and I have our reasons, ya see...
  222. We probably ain't gonna stick around for long.
  223. Ooyodo: Oh?
  224. Is that so...
  225.
  226. ---
  227.
  228. page 11
  229. Ooyodo: In that case,
  230. you should make sure to enjoy this time all the more.
  231. After all, this is the moment
  232. where the four of you can play jazz.
  233.
  234. Ooyodo: That way, you can look back
  235. and honestly say it was a good time.
  236.
  237. Shiki's thoughts?: A session
  238. that stays in your heart-
  239.
  240.
  241. Ooyodo: (We've got plenty of scores where that came from~)
  242. [Slam]
  243.
  244. ---
  245.
  246. Page 12
  247. Shiki: Now that we've picked our instruments,
  248. we ought to pick a song, an objective...
  249.
  250. Iso: It's hard to choose with so many...
  251. Shiki: How about we start with something more approachable and narrow it down from there?
  252. Kishi: Which means?
  253.
  254. Shiki: Right...
  255. For example,
  256.
  257. Shiki: Nursery rhymes...?
  258. [Glimmer]
  259. Book: All together now!
  260. Kids' Jazz
  261. (Nursery Rhymes of the Sea Edition)
  262.
  263. Shiki: I figure songs people from any generation can recognize would draw people better than
  264. starting with an unfamiliar song out of the blue.
  265. I also... well yeah, I started like this too.
  266. Kishi: Something we have some experience with then.
  267.
  268. ---
  269.
  270. Page 13
  271. Iso: I'd love to do nursery rhyme jazz~
  272. Kishi: I think that's a good idea as well.
  273. Asa-chan?
  274. Asa: Hm? Ah, I'm fine with whatever...
  275.
  276. Asa: Can ya really make nursery rhymes cool with jazz?
  277.
  278. Shiki: You
  279. You can!
  280. Asa: Why're ya so serious now!?
  281.
  282. Shiki: I'll show you a band recording I have later!
  283. Asa: O-Okay!
  284. Iso: Leeet's see...
  285.
  286. Iso: This is for Hamanami-chan after all.
  287. Kishinami-chan, you two should decide.
  288. [Pass...]
  289. Kishi: !
  290. Is that alright?
  291.
  292. Kishi: Right...
  293. -
  294. ...
  295. ... ah.
  296.
  297. Kishi: Asa-chan,
  298. what about this one?
  299. Asa: !
  300.
  301. ---
  302.
  303. Page 14
  304. Ooyodo: I thought they made for an odd grouping,
  305. but they're actually getting along quite well.
  306.
  307. Ooyodo: It's too bad they're only forming a "limited-time"(?) band.
  308. Akashi: Yeahh.
  309. Yuubari seemed really happy when I asked if she could help teach recently.
  310.
  311. Ooyodo: Yuubari's busy with exercises these days too-
  312. ...ah.
  313.
  314. Ooyodo: How about we recommend them what we did? Doing exercises where you set yourself small goals.
  315. Akashi: Oh! I guess we could do that too.
  316. I'll get to work on it right away!
  317. [Chitter-chatter]
  318.
  319. ---
  320.
  321. Page 15
  322. Akashi: [Approval...]
  323. Shiki: (So many pages...)

  326.
  327. Goal: Produce a stable sound!
  328.
  329. Goal: Understand your current abilities!
  330.
  331. Goal: -song until the end!
  332.
  333. Goal: Level up each individual ability-
  334.
  335. Goal: Rehearse-
  336.
  337. ---
  338.
  339. Page 16
  340. Goal: -performance!
  341. Live!
  342.
  343. Yuugumo: Shhhhhh.
