  1. A guide explaining how to download Steam depots of previous versions of DOOM: the Dark Ages and the steps to get your downpatched version of DOOM: The Dark Ages to work.

  3. Note: this is missing depot 3017865 which a 0 byte folder with a folder called "EmptySteamDepot". I have yet to find if this impacts the downpatch but so far, its working fine with just the depots below. Scroll to the bottom to find the steps to downpatch.

  5. Note 2: for tunable updates you do NOT have to downpatch.
  6. Simply having a firewall rule in place to block outbound network access is sufficient.

  40. STEPS TO DOWNPATCH:

  42. 1. Ensure you have at least 70GB of storage free on the same drive you have Steam installed on. (usually this is the C:\ drive) Download all the depots through Steam console. To open Steam console, open a Run prompt in Windows and type "steam://open/console" (without quotes) then press OK. The Steam console should open.

  44. Download each depot one-by-one by pasting the strings in per depot starting from "download_depot....". Wait until each download has finished. Note: this downloads the whole game so depending on your download speed it may take a while for large depots like the data depot to be finished downloading.

  46. (Note: Steam console prints NO progress so you can view task manager and look at your Ethernet card to view if its still downloading. It does however print when its DONE downloading a depot)
  47. (Note 2: By default, the downloads are stored in "\Steam\steamapps\content\app_3017860\" so ensure you have enough storage on your main drive!)

Create a folder on your preferred drive (ensure 70GB of storage is available here) you want to run the downpatched game from and give it a convenient name like "DOOM The Dark Ages Downpatch 1.0.0.1". Then, combine the contents of all the downloaded depots found in \Steam\steamapps\content\app_3017860\DEPOTS in that single folder. (I recommend copying first, in case you make an error you don't have to redownload the whole thing again.)

  51. 3. After you are done, add a text file in that same downpatched folder called "steam_appid" (no quotes) and paste in the following value "3017860" (no quotes). Save the text file when done.

Block network access for your downpatched copy by adding an outbound firewall rule in your preferred layer 7 firewall application (usually Windows Defender Firewall) for "DOOMTheDarkAges.exe" so it cannot connect to the internet. If you don't know how to do this, refer to the #da-faq channel in the Modern DOOM Speedrunning discord.

  55. 5. Go back into Steam → Games → "Add a Non-Steam Game to my library". Browse to your downpatched TDA folder and select "DOOMTheDarkAges.exe". Optionally add back any launch commands such as "+com_skipIntroVideo 1" to skip intro splash screens back. If you are using favorites in Steam then you might need to scroll through your Steam library near "D" to find your downpatched game.

  57. 6. You should now have a functional downpatched copy of DOOM: The Dark Ages that no longer receives tunable updates through the internet.
