  1. In a certain population, 30% are smokers and 60% of the smokers will develop emphysema. What is the probability that a person, chosen at random from this population will develop emphysema (assume that only smokers will develop emphysema)?
  2. The following table gives the breakdown (by standing and college) of students at a certain university. A student is chosen at random. If the student is in the Engineering College (E), what is the probability the student is a junior? If the student is a senior, what is the probability the student is in the Business College (B)? If the student is a freshman, what is the probability that the student is in A&S (A) or (B)? If the student is in (A) or (B), what is the probability that the student is a freshman? If the student is a freshman or a senior, what is the probability that the student is not in (A)?

  5. Freshman 500 300 250
  6. Sophomore 490 297 240
  7. Junior 485 295 235
  8. Senior 483 295 233

  10. Can there be events A and B such that p(A∩B) > p(A)p(B)? If so, give an example. If not, why not?
  11. Airport security screens baggage for a certain substance using both a detection apparatus and a trained dog. Experience has shown that if the substance is present, the apparatus will detect it with probability .88 and the dog will detect it with probability .79. Assume that the functioning of the apparatus is independent of the behavior of the dog, and assume that the substance is present in a piece of baggage. What is the probability that it will be detected by both the apparatus and the dog? What is the probability that it will be detected by at least one of the apparatus and the dog? If we now also assume that the dog is only used to screen baggage which has been “passed” by the apparatus, what is the probability that bag in which the substance is present is detected by the dog?
  12. Do exercise 32 on p.88~89 of the textbook.
