- Bret Maverick, needing money for a poker tournament, faces various comic mishaps and challenges, including a charming woman thief.
- Maverick is recreated from the character James Garner created in the 1950s TV program. Maverick is a gambler who would rather con someone than fight them. He needs an additional three thousand dollars in order to enter a Winner Take All poker game that begins in a few days. He tries to win some, tries to collect a few debts, and recover a little loot for the reward, all with a light hearted air. He joins forces with a woman gambler with a marvelous, though fake, southern accent as the two both try and enter the game.
- Nice cast but in trying to get laughs and twists, all the beauty of what could have been was wasted. This could have been a real gem instead of a stinker. Remakes seldom achieve anywhere near the originals so why waste the money to produce them. All viewers aren't as stupid as the industry thinks.
- Jodie Foster I love (ever since "little girl who lives down the lane")But she has absolutely NO comedy timing and absolutely zero chemistry with Mel (who is tres cute). Story line is OK, but Jodie dear, you should have waited for another dramatic script to be pushed under your door. Someone else suggested Meg Ryan (too smug?) Marisa Tomei? or some fabulous no-body that should have been given a start.
- Fast, funny, full of straight-ahead action and tongue-in-cheek jokes, Maverick is Lethal Weapon meets Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That combination won't win any prizes for originality, but it works like a movie mogul's dream and sets the summer-film season off to an unbeatable start.
- The robber is played by Danny Glover, who was Mel Gibson's partner in the Lethal Weapon series of films (also directed by Richard Donner). When he pulls down the mask they look at each other for a second and a musical sound bit from Lethal Weapon plays as they look at each other and shake their heads. Also when leaving the bank, Danny Glover is heard saying "I'm too old for this shit." which he says (or a variation) of in all 4 Lethal Weapon movies. a5c7b9f00b
