- 01 Gate
- I was going for something triumphant and militaristic to start with, inspired by Kode9’s 9 Samurai, and some early 2000s DJ Premier beats. The goal has been reached and there’s excitement, but we also approach something archaic and traditional, so there’s this formality around it. The secondary melody came out of some dungeon synth noodling that lends a dark fantasy vibe. It’s like we’ve reached the metaphorical castle, which is success, but there’s still some hoops to jump through, as always.
- 02 Not Afraid
- Continuing a bit with the dark fantasy/dungeon sounds, here with an industrial beat. There’s an odd timing to the repetition of the main melody at times, and in general it’s quite otherworldly, leaning into this mix of folk horror & sci-fi that’s kinda the backbone of the Green Annex concept. Like, we’ve been searching for this higher plane or desirable place, not really thinking about the beings that already live there, that run the place. So there’s a bit of trepidation as we proceed.
- 03 Alien Tongue
- A simple but unusual (?) idea, musically - fat heavy bass drones and chopped up jungle breaks. Echoing the conversation once these beings are met - basic ideas approached from alien angles.
- 04 Leaf House
- Yes, inspired by House of Leaves, as a standalone tune, but as part of a sequence here this one represents environments we might find ourselves in that don’t necessarily behave the way we expect, or are familiar with. On the GA story level that is a physical thing, but in a symbolic way that is more likely a process, customs, or behaviour of people. Similarly, I wanted this to be a straight up 4/4 thing but with some unexpected elements.
- 05 Convex
- Starts kinda like that early Scorn, dark burnt dub… or something… and blows out into soaring distorted synths that call back to early witch-house. Although I don’t think it’s necessarily dark - it has a kind of reflective tone that represents the place we've reached here. That is, it seems we’ve found the Green Annex, and things are starting to turn a little bit upside down… ? But isn’t that what we wanted? :| Listening now I feel like it kinda ends on a cliffhanger.. which makes sense when you see/hear the start of GA:7! I hope.
