- This one was tough. Out of the box, it doesn't even start.
- Let's begin by making it start. Disable `FullScreen=1` and add `AllowWindowedMode=1` on the swkotor.ini file, at the game's root.
- You now have a window of the game. It crashes at the logo sequence. Delete: `biologo.bik`, `legal.bik`, and `leclogo.bik` from the movies directory.
- Go into the settings, change your resolution to an appropriate 4:3 aspect. While you're at it, disable Grass and Shadows, as well as Framebuffer Effects and Soft Shadows at Advanced Settings.
- Click new game. Create a character. Don't bother spending hours to customize it. It'll probably crash when you enter the game. Just check if it works, and if you can see the "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away" intro.
- Now it's time to purchase the game again. Steam provides an encrypted executable, so you'll need to grab a retail version off somewhere. Grab yourself an USB CD reader too. Replace the Steam executable with your retail one, and plug in the disk.
- Now, search for the reddit mod list: https://www.reddit.com/r/kotor/comments/kffssz/kotor_1_and_2_mod_builds_guaranteed_compatibility/ Feel free to use the spoiler-free build, or not follow them at all. You just need some technical mods.
- Get the community bugfix one, and follow the widescreen patcher instructions at the end of the list.
- Hope that you have a compatible monitor resolution, and get the necessary HUD fixes for your resolution. Drop them on your Override, like any other mod.
- Run the game. With any luck, it works. Mine didn't, because I have a 21:9 monitor with 2560x1080 as the resolution. There was no compatible HUD file, so the game ended up unplayable, as not only the UI would be messed up, but the dialogue box wouldn't even appear. It's a shame.
