- Are you sure you want to go to equestria? You would have to have a diet like a vegan pussy.
- No meat, or if you did get meat , mercilessly killing and butchering some animal, you couldn't eat it anywhere near a pony town.

- Of course it makes sense you fucking moron
- What are the kings of each region? the ones that eat meat. Who are the tops of the food chain? the ones that eat meat. Carnivores are killers and killers evolve.
- Veggies can be very tasty and they are absolutely part of a healthy diet, but they don't replace meat. I'm am all for the ethical raising & butchering of animals, but meat is an essential part of our life. Meat is high calorie, full of protein and necessary things for life. We evolve because the surplus of intake provided by a high quality source of food is what has allowed our brains to become such a massively huge sink of energy and resource which has made us smarter.
- Vegans are fucking morons

- Yeah, I'd have to do it out in the woods somewhere, and probably on the opposite side of the town from Fluttershy's cottage just to be sure, but killing and prepping my own meat is no challenge.
- Anyway, that is only if I want red meat. Ponies have been shown to enjoy fishing- I'd just keep the fish instead of tossing them back.
- Hell, even Yellowquiet murdered fish for her ferrets, so she'd have no right to complain.

- Killing animals because they taste good is wrong, ethically.
- They have feelings, they can feel love, fear, joy and pain.
- The same reasons why you shouldn't harm other people should apply just the same to these animals.
- Meat is a luxury food. The amount of land that it takes to raise livestock could feed lots more people as farmland than the livestock does
- Our ancestors ate meat, as well as casually murdered people from other tribes and had sex with 12 year olds. We don't base our ethics on our ancestors' habits.
- Eating meat is unethical. It's wrong. You shouldn't do it.
- But change is slow to happen. It's very unlikely that someone in the habit of eating meat will consider these issues seriously, because of intellectual laziness, and resistance to change.
- Eventually society will realize it, but it'll take many generations. People don't change their minds, they just die out and take old ideas with them.

- Carnivorous animals need to eat a fuckton of meat because it is NOT high energy. It IS high in protein, which is the building block of the entire body.
- Omnivores have it was. Carnivores need a ton of meat in order to make up for the lack of energy. Herbivores need a ton of plants in order to make up for the lack of protein. Omnivores can get our protein and our energy with barely any rations. That's why humans rule.

- NOTHING makes you fat in itself. It's when you eat in excess and don't burn it off. Besides, fat is formed when you don't use en edgy your body has stored up. Considering meat has relatively no energy compared to, say, potatoes, it makes no sense that being a lazy meat eater would make you fatter than being a lazy vegetarian. This is of course assuming that you're also eating at a calorie surplus. Even if you're a lazy fuck, you'll still lose weight if you're eating hat a calorie deficit.

- The calories are just a resource.
- Whether the resource can be utilized, or whether fat stores are used depends entirely on regulators, which are irregular between individuals and their current state.
- Eg, you can eat less than that "2000" calories, or whatever other nonsense number popsci makes up, and you can still get fat since your brain has initialized "survival mode" for not eating enough.
- Trust me, I am science.

- Fat and starch are better sources of energy, actually. You can't survive on low-fat meats, not to mention pure protein alone. Metabolising protein for energy releases nitrogen compounds, which are toxic and need to be converted to useless urea and excreted. You get none of this crap from starch. Meat is still a good source of amino acids. Not the best source of energy, though. That would be fat.

- >Killing animals because they taste good is wrong, ethically.
- Those in the industry kill animals because they need to do so to get paid and live. Those who buy the meat do so because it is a part of their diet. Nobody is doing this just because it tastes good.
- >They have feelings, they can feel love, fear, joy and pain.
- What's it matter? Animals kill animals all the time and in much larger numbers than humans do. Should we ban hunting in the whole animal kingdom just because the prey has feelings?
- >The same reasons why you shouldn't harm other people should apply just the same to these animals.
- You shouldn't harm people for two reasons. Loyalty to your own species and sapience. Animals are animals and lack sapience. There is no reason to show any loyalty or kindness to one if they're not part of your family like a beloved pet.
- >Meat is a luxury food.
- If you want to argue that we don't need meat because things can survive on vegetables, I'd urge you to acknowledge that things can also live solely on meat. Therefore vegetables are a luxury food. You defeat your own argument here.
- >The amount of land that it takes to raise livestock could feed lots more people as farmland than the livestock does
- Oh well?
- >Our ancestors ate meat, as well as casually murdered people from other tribes and had sex with 12 year olds. We don't base our ethics on our ancestors' habits.
- Of course we don't base morals on our ancestors. Our ancestors did know how to survive, however, and they did so by maintaining a diet of meat and vegetables as well as staying active. Gee, doesn't that sound exactly like what people need to do to be healthy? Fancy that.
- >Eating meat is unethical. It's wrong. You shouldn't do it.

- Your body isn't going to not use energy to keep you alive because of regulators. You have a certain amount of energy you need to burn every day to survive. If you don't eat that much energy, your body will pull it form somewhere else on your body. How much or how little it uses depends on the individual's specific energy needs. If you eat more than that specific energy requirement, it will store the excess. If you eat less, it will take from you. The reason why people get thinner when they turn to anorexia is because they're not giving their body ANY energy, so it takes ALL of it from their body. That is your body doing what it needs to to survive. THAT is survival mode.

- *sigh*
- But that's just wrong.
- It's only correct in extreme cases.
- There is no such thing as a "specific" energy requirement.
- The energy use is far, far more elastic than you might imagine. Take hibernation as an example of what Earth creatures, including humans, are capable of.
- And on the flipside there is not infinite fat creating resources to make all excess intake into fat. Otherwise those tiny japanese grills who win eating contests would bloat into godzilla.
- The amount of resources, instigated by hormones, which are also a limited resource varies significantly.

If they were referring to actual "luxury foods" like foie gras then they might be on a little sturdier ground, but what's wrong with a regular beef farm for example?
- And regarding the "meat is a luxury food" argument, I would ask: how many of the vegans that you know are poor?

- >It's only correct in extreme cases.
- If by extreme, you mean every case, ok.
- >Take hibernation as an example of what Earth creatures
- Do you want to know why animals can sleep for so long without eating? It's because when they're asleep, their body doesn't require as much energy to run. Therefore it will take less from their body to make up for what they're not eating. Nothing can sleep forever, though. Eventually you'll eat through everything and just die.
- As for humans, are you talking about the man who hibernated for more than 20 years? You do know he just took long naps and woke up every day at noon for a sandwich his wife made him, right? If there are other cases of legitimately hibernating humans you'd like to share, I'd love to hear about them.
- >And on the flipside there is not infinite fat creating resources to make all excess intake into fat.
- Yes there is. Your fat stores bloat up until you become the half-ton man they show on all the fat people shows. Then you die because your body wasn't designed to handle that much fat.
- >Otherwise those tiny japanese grills who win eating contests would bloat into godzilla.

- I think you guys are arguing for a similar thing, here.
- Obviously your total daily energy expenditure is going to be different every day depending on what you do or the current state of your body, but you can generally ballpark the amount of calories you need a day, especially since now we have tools to help people do that.
- You criticized the Anon you replied to for only stating extreme cases, but hormones would not so severely affect one's total daily energy expenditure that one would make a critical error in calorie calculations unless in extreme cases.
- I think the point the Anon you replied to is trying to make is that it is not hard to lose, gain, or maintain weight if you want to. Not to undermine your knowledge, but a lot of what you are getting at overcomplicates things and is unnecessary for the layman to know to be healthy. I also have interest in nutrition sciences and physiology as I think it is very important, but we carry a lot of extraneous knowledge from normal health maintenance.
- I think what you were getting at with your earlier post (if you were the same person) was that the very low-density lipoproteins in animal fat contribute to hypotension, heart disease, and other crippling conditions.

- Our current environment might have changed from a more hunter-like kind of living to our modern system, while our teeth can be perfectly suited to both environments, especially since the current standard diet does include meat. If this diet would change this might cause our teeth to adopt to this new diet over a long period of time, although I wouldn't expect this to be a quick change if this change wouldn't offer that much of an advantage.

- It doesn't work that way, energy regulation is nowhere close to being that simplistic.

- The discussion pretty much seemed to have died down.
- If there's one thing I still wanted to ask those making the statement that based on the structure of our teeth we can say that humans must eat meat (the statement I've been arguing against) the following question:
- Would you say that we still must eat meat from a biological point of view if there came out a new product that was an exact copy of meat in terms of both structure and nutritional value, with the only real exception being that no animal was raised for it.
- If the answer is yes: then what is the relevant distinction between these two products?
- If the answer is no: how close would the product have to be to meat for it to be a proper alternative?

- >According to research conducted at the University of Graz, vegetarians are two to three times more likely than meat eaters to suffer from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and somatoform disorders and syndromes.
- Oh wow, congratulations, you found one study! An analysis of this particular study shows that its results are not spectacular because there are only marginal statistically relevant differences between the participants classified as vegetarians and meat eaters. However, there are significant weaknesses in the study design and in the interpretation of results.
- The classification in the various Food Groups took place after self-assessment of participants from a list of six eating habits, which was presented to the participants by the interviewers, without detailed explanation and definition. The actual food consumption was not interrogated or checked. Both were noted by the Grazer authors themselves as a weakness of the study .
- Vegan, lacto-ovo-vegetarians and fish eaters were summarized to the group of "vegetarian" . In the original study with over 15,000 participants the group known as vegetarians thus consists of 31 vegans,124 lacto-ovo - vegetarians and 185 fish eaters was. This shows not only a troublesome understanding of vegetarianism, but it falsifies the studies result massively, since more than half of the alleged vegetarians are no vegetarians.
- Participants from the other groups were assigned to 330 so-called "vegetarians"
- Even more problematic than the classification of "vegetarians" is the classification in the different groups of meat eaters. Without more detailed explanation of what separates, for example, a "mixed diet with little meat" from a "mixed diet with lots of fruits and vegetables" or what "a lot of meat", "a little meat" and "lots of fruits and vegetables" means in terms of amounts, is a classification according to self-assessment of the participants is arbitrary and erroneous.

- The team "incidence" is used in the study. The disease incidence is defined as the rate of new cases within a certain observation period. To detect the incidence, a long-term study design is necessary because at least two measurements have to be carried out: the rate of disease at the beginning of the monitoring (baseline) and the rate of diseases at a later stage (follow- up). The reported data however are from a cross-sectional study (data collection at a time). It could merely determine the prevalence (incidence rate at a time), but not the incidence. That such basic concepts of medical statistics were apparently confused in a scientific publication, is more than surprising.

However, a study of vegetarian and non-vegetarian adults in Taiwan found no significant difference in bone mineral density between the two groups.[44] Other studies, exploring animal protein's negative effects on bone health, suggest that vegetarians may be less prone to osteoporosis than omnivores, as vegetarian subjects had greater bone mineral density and more bone formation.

Vegetarianism and veganism are quite different, though; calcium is common in animal-based foods such as dairy and fish (mostly dairy), so vegans would have a harder time getting it without significant effort. Vegetarians not so much, though.
