He was Emil's idol

And eventually, he surpassed Tomas completely, going onto an international stage where Tomas was still competing nationally
This caused Tomas to spiral, because skating was all he had, and eventually, the dam broke

And as a way of atoning in his own way, after a year of taking a break from skating, he returnen with a brand-new arsenal that nobody had seen before, because it never got past the Czech Republic
Emil took up Tomas's signature routines and he wants to win uses his moves as a way of showing that it's possible for him to gain gold in spirit, if not in actuality
He's determined, and coming to terms with the fact that he has to skate for himself and not anyone else is part of his character arc
It takes some brutal honesty from Seung-Gil to push him toward true recovery, and it was the source of one of their biggest arguments
"That's stupid. It's the reason why you never get to the finals, because you're using programs not meant for you. You're better than some nobody who could never make it past nationals, you're a stronger skater, and you need to wake up and realize that."
He's not saying any of it to be deliberately hurtful but because he honestly thinks it's a waste

Oh, absolutely
This is something Emil has worked toward for over two years
It's his way of gaining peace
It's not exactly the healthiest way of coping, but it's the only way he knows how to live with himself
Meanwhile, there's Seung-Gil, who takes a hard stance against romance and dating and only goes for sex as a way of blowing off steam. He doesn't care that JJ is ashamed of him (and posts obnoxious shit about his sex life; "she really did a number on me ;) ;)") because honestly, why should he? He doesn't even like the guy, but for all that he sucks, he's something comfortable and familiar and best of all, he doesn't expect Seung-Gil to open up to him
He's been that way ever since he was a kid, seeing his single mom's endless string of boyfriends, each time promising, "This is it, baby, this one is The One and he's going to take care of us, I promise, you'll never have to want for anything." He saw the way he got treated and resolved never to put himself or anyone else in that situation.
His arrangement with JJ is fine enough for him, but then there's Emil who sees the way they interact with one another, the way they repel one another in public, and he's perceptive enough to get a good picture of what's going on, so he's the only one to ask the real questions, "Why are you with someone you don't even like? Does he make you happy? Can you talk to him about anything? Isn't that what a relationship is supposed to be?"
seung-Gil is adamant about not caring or needing that sort of thing from anybody, but Emil is persistent and sees it as a challenge and despite himself, when Emil makes some claim about getting him to see the appeal of what a real relationship should be, he's curious. Emil's not somebody who just likes him because of his looks, he doesn't want him for his body, he's not somebody who brushes him off because they assume he's a stoic robot without feelings, but he wants to draw those feelings out and see them for himself.
No dinner-and-movie dates from this guy, no awkward small-talk, no getting past that awkward first meeting
Emil takes Seung-Gil parasailing and it's terrifying and exciting and the best time Seung-Gil's ever had in the company of another person
(It's canon that Emil does extreme sports in his off time and it gives his poor coach a heart attack any time he sets out)
Little by little, inch by inch, Emil is invading Seung-Gil's carefully crafted reserve with his easy smiles, his freedom with affection that's unwanted at first but becomes more and more tolerable
He opens up without meaning to, without ever thinking about it before admitting something innocuous but revealing all the same, and Emil treats every single new fact like a victory

Emil finds him before his sobbing begins in earnest and just folds him into a hug and tugs him close and Seung-Gil hates feeling so miserable but more than that, he hates how Emil is so comfortably solid and warm like he doesn't have a care in the world, like he didn't just suffer the same crushing defeat he did
He's never seen Emil nervous or frustrated (unless it's nervous or frustrated about him) and it doesn't seem fair that the person who's supposedly a robot is breaking down in front of somebody who gets emotional over the smallest things

Seung-Gil likes being with JJ even if he hates him because JJ doesn't ask anything of him, because it's easy to forget about the stress he's under and the pressure he puts on himself when he's spending all his energy on taking himself out of the moment when JJ touches him
But with Emil, he all but demands Seung-Gil's attention, he requires his full and undivided concentration because he's always asking questions, always prodding his sore sports, asking if he's okay, and it's so wholly unlike anything Seung-Gil's ever let himself have
He hates it because it's new and terrifying and unknown
But deep down, those are the exact reasons why it's so good for him

I actually kinda wanna backtrack a little here, I hope you don't mind. You mentioned earlier that Seung-Gil had to pull himself out of the moment when he was sleeping with JJ, like he's not fully there or in his own space. Why is that? I would have figured his energy would instead be wasted on focusing on the touching itself- How it feels to be touched here or there, the sighs and smells and sensory overloads.

Actually, yeah, mostly because JJ is entirely selfish and concentrates on himself first and foremost, it only matters if he gets off; Seung-Gil only really serves as a source of friction and the fact that he needs an audience.
His hands on Seung-Gil don't have anything to do with making him feel good or valued
It doesn't go so far as, like, JJ being malicious or anything, he just legitimately doesn't think about it and Seung-Gil isn't invested enough to tell him to change tactics because it's just a way to waste time
