  1. I'm just starting this quickly and I promise to go into more detail when I have time.
  2.
  3.
  4.
  5. a few very quick Tips until I have more time:
  6.
  7. 1.Energy is the most precious commodity in the game so spend it wisely
  8.
  9. 2.Happy is extremely important when you train so do what you must to get into the best possibly property
  10.
  11. 3. Do not fail crimes. Pick crimes that you can complete successfully and wait for the nerve amount to go up before trying something new.
  12.
  13. 4. You can buy 100 items from the city every day and resell on the item market. This is a great way to start making money. The best things to buy are beer (bits n bobs), empty boxes (post office), and pepper spray (big Al's), stuff may go out of stock but replenishes throughout the day.
  14.
  15. 5. READ TUTORIALS IN THE FORUMS! The very best way to learn is to read what experts have written. Go to forums and "Tutorials and Guides" look for threads with a lot of likes and read away.
  16.
  17. GENERAL TORN ADVICE:
  18.
  19. Originally written by Baldr to help someone else, but it's useful generic advice.)
  20.
  21. I wanted to offer some general advice, and also to offer to answer questions any time you have them.
  22.
  23. Reaching level 15 is important, very important. Level 15 allows you to travel, and when you can travel, it becomes much, much easier to make money. Most people reach level 15, and then start running flowers and plushies. You fly to another country, buy flowers or plushies, and fly home. Then you sell those flowers or plushies to another player. There is a very big market, lots of people want to buy them, and you'll get a very nice profit for it. You can easily make $3M a day or more doing this, more if you are very active.
  24.
  25. To reach level 15, you need to train your gym stats a bit. Hopefully you've been doing some of that, but you'll need to do more. (And long term, even the people who have played for years still use most of their energy to train their stats.)
  26.
  27. Once your stats are high enough, there are some targets known as "leveling targets" that you can attack. These are people (mostly inactive now) who have fairly low stats for their level. They are easy to beat in a fight. You attack them, then leave them in the street. That gives you the best experience gains and lets you level up fairly quickly.
  28.
  29. Once you can easily win against the leveling targets, you should use all or almost all of your e (energy) attacking them and leaving them in the street, until you reach level 15. If you can't beat them easily (ie, if you lose or if you win but take a lot of damage) then you should train more then try again in a few days. Once you reach level 15, level isn't important any more, and you should go back to gym training with your e.
  30.
  31. Happiness plays a big part in gym gains, especially when you are small. That's why the shack isn't a good place to live. Low happy means low gym gains. I usually recommend renting a mansion or a ranch until you reach level 15. Don't buy a property, and don't rent long term. 30 days is about right.
  32.
  33. Once you reach level 15, you can easily afford to rent a PI (Private Island) and there are several good reasons to do so. Almost everyone rents a PI when they reach level 15, and some who can afford it start renting one sooner. That's why you don't want to buy a cheaper property and you don't want to rent a mansion or whatever for long term if you can help it.
  34.
  35. When you first move into your mansion, your happy won't change. It will gradually go up to the max happy the mansion gives you, but it takes a long time. You can buy lollipops at Sally's Sweet Shop, in City, East Side.) Using lollipops will raise your happy. Use them to reach the max happy for your mansion, then stop.
  36.
  37. Your "max" happy isn't really a max. You can go over, even way over, for a short period of time. If you are over your normal max, then Happy resets to that max every 15 minutes. xx:00, xx:15, xx:30, xx:45. Any hour, every 15 minutes, it resets.
  38.
  39. You can use lollipops to raise happy above normal, and then use an ecstasy to double your happy. That gets your happy much higher than normal. Then you use the gym train your e and get much bigger gains than normal. On the next 15 minute mark, happy will reset, but you can train the e away first.
  40.
  41. It's hard to make big money until you are level 15, but you can make smaller amounts of money by going to City, East Side, and shopping at Bits N Bobs or Sweet Shop. Lollipops resell at a high markup. In Bits N Bobs, beer, or any of the basic plushies, will also resell at decent profit. You can buy 100 items a day in the Torn City shops, and reselling those items should make you around 60k a day in profit.
  42.
  43. You will get mugged. Everyone gets mugged. Learning to protect your money from muggers is important. I think you have to be a certain level (3 or 5) to use the Torn Bookie, but once you can do that, you can use the bookie to protect cash. Look for a bet that has a closing time at least several days away, the further the better. Place a bet. Until the closing time for that bet, you can add more money to the bet, and you can remove money from the bet. Money in the bet is safe from muggers. That allows you to use the bookie like a vault, storing money safely. The only risk is that you must remember to remove the money before the betting closes. Take the money out, and move it to a different bet with a further away closing time.
  44.
  45. Put your merit points into education time reduction first, until that is maxed. Then into banking interest rates until it's maxed.
  46.
  47. For education classes, finish any class you are already doing, but then start working on Sports Science courses, and take all of those. Those are highly recommended as the first place to get a bachelors degree.
  48.
  49. Feel free to hit me up with any questions any time. I won't always be able to answer right away, but I will respond the first chance I get.
  50.
  51. Good luck.
  52.
  53. ---
  54.
  55. These are well known leveling targets. They were chosen because they have fairly low stats for their level, making them ideal to gain experience and level up.
  56.
  57. You want to hit them, then leave them in the street, for the best experience gains. Don't mug or hospitalize them. The stat spies aren't recent, so some may have higher stats than listed. If you're brand new, you'll need to train your stats before you start attacking.

  63. JOBS ADVICE:
  64.
  65. Baldr says:
  66.
  67.
  68.
  69. This is a cut-n-paste post I send to new people. Usually, I've seen them trying to find a job, but sometimes I just noticed they were new and didn't have a job.
  70.
  71. Right away, take one of the basic Torn jobs. Grocer or casino are good choices, but any of the basic Torn jobs will do. That job will let your work stats start rising, which will make it easier to get a job with a player owned company later.
  72.
  73. You can keep looking for a company job. Sweet shop is usually the best place for a new player. Those have low stat requirements. And in a sweet shop, you want the company to have at least a 7* rating. Less than 7 stars doesn't allow you to turn in job points for energy cans, which is the primary benefit of sweet shops. (Those energy cans can be sold for $1M to $2M each.) Plus, your # of job points gained each day is based on the # of stars, so more is better.
  74.
  75. Companies also get a limited number of trains to give out each day based on # of stars. A 3* company gets 3 trains, a 10* company gets 10 trains, etc. So more stars means you'll get trained more often.
  76.
  77. So I would avoid accepting any job from a company with a low # of stars. At least 7* for sweet shop.
  78.
  79. Be willing to work for free. Some companies pay, some don't, and none pay very much unless you have very high stats. (My company is a 10* fitness center, requires high stats to do the jobs, and still doesn't pay much. But the benefits of working there are awesome. ) Jobs are mostly about the perks of that job, not the money. TV and Oil companies do pay a lot, but have very, very high stat requirements.
  80.
  81. When I go looking for a job, I decide what kind of company I want to work for first, then I list all of those companies. Clicking on Newspaper, Job Listing, Sweet Shop, for instance. They will be listed with the 10* companies first, the others later. Look at the company names for those that include "hiring" in the name.
  82.
  83. Once you find some that say Hiring, don't just apply. Message the directors first. You can only have one application in at a time, so you're better off if you msg directors from several companies, and only apply after they've told you that they'll hire you.
  84.
  85. When you msg them, tell them your stats. And assuming you are active daily, tell them that. Company directors are going to want someone who logs in at least once a day, and they are going to want to know what your stats are, so make sure that info is all in the msg you send. Most companies will train their employees in rotation, but you might want to ask about their training policy in your msg just to be sure.
  86.
  87. When you are brand new, you have essentially no work stats. Working the basic Torn jobs will help bring those stats up. And it shouldn't take long before you can find a company job. Those usually have better perks and usually they will train you.
  88.
  89. Over time, you'll want to do different jobs. At some point, you will probably want to do the basic Torn jobs for education, medical, and law. Those all give permanent perks when you reach the top level. You keep those perks (lower education time, ability to revive, increased crime success rate) after you leave the jobs. And company jobs have lots of different perks, so you'll probably want to do different ones at different times as your goals change.
  90.
  91. I hope this helps. Good luck.
  92.
  93. HOW TO MAKE MONEY:
  94.
  95. Baldr says:
  96.
  97.
  98.
  99. I'm often asked about how to make money.
  100.
  101. Making money is hard when you are brand new. Once you reach level 15 and can travel, it gets much easier, which is why I try to push people to reach level 15 asap.
  102.
  103. Level 15 allows you to travel. Running flowers (or plushies) will make $3M to $5M a day, maybe even $6M if you are super active. You fly to another country, buy flowers or plushies, bring them back to Torn City, and sell them for a big profit. A large part of the Torn economy is based around flowers/plushies. People who have completed the History degree can trade in a full set of either in return for 10 points. Those points can be sold. So many people will buy them to make sets, which they trade in on points.
  104.
  105. Trading can make a lot of money, but requires very high activity. It helps to have a bazaar, too. You can sell items without a bazaar, but it's usually ideal. The best trading items are usually consumable items, like drugs, alcohol, energy cans, and donator packs. By "consumable" I mean that people use them and they are gone, so flowers/plushies would also qualify. It's hard to make big money on things like guns because people don't need to buy a new gun every day, but they'll need more drugs, or energy cans, or donator packs. Trading will also lead to a lot of muggings. If you are selling big money items, or large quantities of lower value items, muggers will find you and take advantage. Trading also takes some up front money. If you don't have the money to buy donator packs or goodie bags, you can't trade them.
  106.
  107. One thing that can be done right away, before you reach L15, is buying 100 items in Torn. You are limited to buying 100 items total in the Torn shops each day, and some of those can be resold for a little profit.
  108.
  109. In Bits-N-Bobs, you can buy beer, and 3 kinds of basic plushies. (kittens, sheep, and teddy bears.) In Sally's Sweet Shop, lollipops are a good choice. These shops will sell out of items, and restock them later (more or less randomly.) Buying 100 of any of those (beer, plushies, lollipops) and reselling them will make you around 50,000 to 70,000 profit a day.
  110.
  111. Jobs don't pay a lot, with a few exceptions for people with very, very high work stats. But the benefits of different jobs can be very nice. For new people, the sweet shop job is good. It has low stat requirements, and a 7* or higher sweet shop will allow you to trade in job points for energy cans. Those energy cans can be sold for 1.5M to 2.5M depending on the can. You should always be working, either at a company or at one of the basic Torn jobs like casino, grocery, army. Having some kind of a job keeps your work stats growing, and work stats grow very, very slowly no matter what you do.
  112.
  113. Slutting can make a lot of money. When you're brand new, it's the easiest way to make good money. I'm not a big fan of it, because it uses your energy, and if you do it a lot, you'll make a lot of money but you'll miss out on a lot of gym training that you really need to do. That can slow you down from reaching L15.
  114.
  115. Slutting means attacking someone and losing. People will pay you to attack them and lose because it raises their number of times they successfully defended, and there are merit points for that. You can make $250,000 to $300,000 for each attack, sometimes more. I wouldn't do it for less than 250k. If you're going to waste your energy, you should at least make a decent profit.
  116.
  117. You can often find people who will pay you for slutting in this forum : http://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=forums&f=59&b=0&a=0
  118.
  119. Before you start attacking, read their post, and be sure to follow their instructions. Some people will be very specific about "msg me ahead of time" or "use fists only" or whatever, and if you don't follow the instructions, they'll use that as an excuse to not pay. You can also look at their age, their networth, and their number of enemies. (You'll find most of this in their stats, by viewing their profile and clicking the button that looks like a bar graph.) Almost everyone will have some enemies, but if it's a high number, they may be scammers. If they have less than $1B networth, or if they are less than 100 days old, you might want to pass, because the people who pay for defends tend to be older and have a lot of money.
  120.
  121. Many will tell you that they pay X amount for defends, and Y amount for runaways. Runaways are always a lot more money. But you'll find it near impossible to get a successful runaway (because their stats are much higher than yours), so base your plans on losing the attack, not on being able to run away.
  122.
  123. If you're going to sell losses, it needs to be short term, and you need to have a goal. Perhaps you want to purchase a donator pack and rent a PI for a month. Both of those would be very useful, and by the time that month passes, you should be level 15 and making money running flowers/plushies so you wouldn't need to go back to slutting. But set your goal, do it enough to reach that goal, then stop. Don't do slutting as an ongoing method of making money. Either don't do it at all, or do it short term, reach your goal, and move on. E (energy) is very important, and you need to use most of it to train.
  124.
  125. In theory, mugging can make a lot of money. In practice, most muggers don't make a lot and they waste a lot of energy. Especially when you are very new, and have low stats, it's hard to consistently find mugging targets with a lot of money. I'd completely avoid mugging until you know a lot more about the game and have trained your stats a good bit.
  126.
  127. I hope this helps.
  128.
  129.
  130. TRAINING ADVICE:
  131.
  132. Baldr says:
  133.
  134.
  135.
  136. I want to explain how to do happy jumps. Some people use different names for them.
  137.
  138. The basics are that you spend around $17M, and 2 days, to build up 1,000 energy, then raise your happy very high, then train all that energy while the happy is high. When you are new, this will give you huge stat gains. The sooner you can do one of these, the better. But many people can't afford to do them until after they are level 15, when your income goes up.
  139.
  140. If you have new player refills available, saving them until you can do a happy jump is an excellent plan.
  141.
  142. If you do not have donator status (meaning you have 150 maximum energy) then you should get donator status before you bother with this. It's more cost efficient. Everyone should have donator status.
  143.
  144. A happy jump requires taking 4 xanax, and one ecstasy. And that means there is some risk, because every time you take a drug, there is a small chance of an overdose. (OD.) OD's are random, and happen about 2.5% of the time when you take a drug. Xanax might be slightly higher, at 3% or 4% chance. If you OD, it will kill the whole thing. You will lose all your energy, all your happy, and you're just boned.
  145.
  146. It also required 5 edvd's, which will probably cost around $2.5M each. So that's 12.5M for edvd's, and around 3.5M for xanax and ecstasy., plus another 1.3M or so for 25 points, so you can do a point refill. That comes up to $17.2M total.
  147.
  148. Despite the high cost and the risk of an OD, the gains are worth it. Prices vary, but this will give you a reasonable ballpark.
  149.
  150. One thing you should understand before you start is that your max happy isn't really a max. You can go over your max happy for short periods of time. The *real* max happy is 99,999, and you won't get there without a specific plan (which I won't cover here.)
  151.
  152. When you are over your max happy, it will reset down to your max every 15 minutes. Every hour, at xx:00, xx:15, xx:30, and xx:45. So our plan is to have you stack energy to 1,000, then while working inside one of those 15 minute windows, you raise happy very high, and train the energy before happy resets.
  153.
  154. To start, buy all the items you need. Four xanax, five edvd's, and one ecstasy. If you can't afford to buy the items, then wait until after you have them to move to the next step. Optional but highly recommended: 25 points so you can do a point refill, allowing you to train an extra 150e while you have high happy.
  155.
  156. Once you have all the items, train all your energy so you start with 0 energy. Then take a xanax. That xanax will give you 250e, and your drug counter will be in the 6 to 8 hour range. You'll have to wait for that drug timer to count to 0 before you can take another. Once it does, take another. That adds another 250e, giving you 500e total. Continue this until you have used 4 xanax and have 1,000e.
  157.
  158. After reaching 1,000e, you still need to wait a bit more, until your drug timer has ended. At that point, you're ready to actually do the jump. You should also make sure that you have no booster cooldown time when you start (which tends to work out on it's own, but plan ahead to be sure.)
  159.
  160. Remember that happy resets every 15 minutes. You want to do this next section starting right after one of those 15 minute reset times, and you have to finish before the next 15 minute period. Every hour, at xx:00, xx:15, xx:30, and xx:45.
  161.
  162. Right after the happy reset time, you start using edvd's. Every edvd will add 6 hours to your booster cooldown time, and will add 2,500 happy. After you've used 4 edvd's, the math adds up to 24 hours, but if you wait just a few seconds, then you're under the 24 hour cooldown maximum, which means you can use one more edvd. Between the 5, you're added 12,500 happy on top of whatever you already had. Assuming you were in a PI, you probably started with roughly 4,000 happy (depending on which PI, staff, etc.) So roughly 16,500 happy total, and much higher than normal.
  163.
  164. Now take the ecstasy. Ecstasy will double your happy, putting you around 33,000 happy.
  165.
  166. Then train all your energy. You can train all in one stat (like strength) or you can spread it around. It depends on your situation, but all stats matter, so if your stats are fairly even when you start, then as a general rule, I'd recommend spreading it so that you train all of your stats evenly, or fairly close. Especially if it's your first happy jump, that's probably your best plan. You don't want to be really high in one stat and all the others be weak. Better to be fairly balanced.
  167.
  168. Once you train your energy, then do a point refill. (Optional, but strongly recommended.) That will give you another 150e, and you train it.
  169.
  170. If you have saved new player refills, you can continue to do the "refill, train" step over and over until you run out of refills, or until the 15 minute happy-reset timer is about to hit.
  171.
  172. There is no way to be positive that you will not OD. An OD at any point ruins the whole thing, and you have to start over. The worst place to OD is on the ecstasy, because you've already done 2 days of prep work, you've already used 4 xanax, and you've already used 5 edvds, which is the most expensive part of this. An OD on the ecstasy really bites. But if it happens, don't give up. Get some more money together, and try the whole thing again. Compared to what you would normally gain in 2 days of training, you'll find that the gains from one happy jump are huge.
  173.
  174. You will not need to do happy jumps forever. Over time, they will be less and less effective. Happy plays a smaller roll later on, when you have higher base stats, you've completed more educations, and you are in better gyms. At some point, doing a happy jump is less effective than simply training your natural energy and using xanax for extra training. And even before that point, the extra expense to do a happy jump makes it not worthwhile. When your individual stats (strength, speed, defense, and dex) are over 150k each, I would stop doing happy jumps.
  175.
  176. For new people though, it can't be beat, and the more often you do them, the stronger you will be.
  177.
  178. If you are able to afford this before you reach level 15, then simply doing one full happy jump will give you stats high enough to easily beat the leveling targets so you can quickly move up to level 15.
  179.
  180. If you plan to do happy jumps often, and have high enough work stats, you should consider getting a job in a 10* Adult Novelties company. 20 job points can be traded in for an edvd, and in a 10* company, the happy you gain when you use an edvd is doubled, bringing your happy even higher for each jump.

  192.
  193. This thread is meant to help brand new players find the most useful guides and provide some basic tips.
  194.
  195.
  196.
  197. GUIDES
  198.
  199. Disclaimer - these are guides, not instruction manuals. The people who made these put a lot of time and effort into it - often multiple people contributed. If you find them useful give them a thumbs up.
  200.
  201. There are loads of other great guides. These are just the ones I refer to the most or found most useful starting out.
  202.
  203.
  204.
  205. Training in the gym
  206.
  207. My favourite guides to gyms and training are both by Hank: Hank's Power Levelling Guide to Level 15
  208.
  209. Worth reading even if you can't afford to use any of training regimes Hanks describes. The biggest things to realise are:
  210. The gains you make in the gym are increased by having a lot of happy, especially as a new player. The higher your happy when you train, the faster your stats increase.
  211. Happy runs out on the hour, at quarter past, half past and quarter to. If you do something to increase your happy at 7:44 you will only have a minute to train while extra happy. If you increase your happy at 7:45 you will have 15 mins to train.
  212. Because of 1 and 2, having as much energy to train with as possible when you increase your happy is a good thing. Those refills are therefore extremely valuable as a new player - you can increase your happy (a lot) once and get a lot of trains done in the 15 mins.
  213.
  214.
  215. Missions
  216.
  217. This is the Missions Guide by SPADES. This is easily the best source of information on missions and is extremely comprehensive.
  218.
  219.
  220.
  221. Companies
  222.
  223. Also by SPADES this Company Comparison Guide is fantastic.
  224.
  225. As a side-note, starting with the basic jobs is a good idea. The grocery store eventually gives you cans which you can sell for decent money while improving your work stats.
  226.
  227. After that working at a company and getting trains will improve your stats faster than the default jobs. If you reach the stat requirements for the default jobs (like Education) before you start them, you can complete all of them in 25 days each, although there are reasons you might want to stay longer - like merits associated with the job or the job perks. You can always go back to a starter job later and you will be at the whatever rank you left at.
  228.
  229. NB When working at a company your efficiency is determined by how often you login, your drug addiction, your happiness and your work stats compared to the requirements of your role in the company. You don't have to "do" anything in a company job.

  235. Tempest's Guide to Easy Merits is an excellent overview of the merits that can be got relatively quickly.
  236.
  237. Think about how you use these. There is no right way or wrong way but when you start the game these come quite easily so its easy to spend them without realising how hard (or simply slow) it becomes to earn more later in the game.

  265. TIPS/FAQs
  266. Don't beg. People don't like it and you will be bountied. Just avoid global chat entirely until you get the lay of the land.
  267. Think before you use refills. These will never expire and are worth 1.7M each at least (based on 68k/point* 25 points). Actually they're worth much more because you can only purchase 1 refill with points per day.
  268. Think before you use merits. Merits are worth 17M each at least (68k/point *250 points) Again actual value is higher because you can only buy a limited number of merits based on your level.
  269. Items spawn in the city which you can find and pick up. The spawning of items is triggered by clicking the "City" link in the "Areas" section on the left of the interface, below "Items" and above "Job". Every hour you have two chances to spawn an item by clicking this link. Looking for them in the city does not effect them spawning and once they spawn they never de-spawn until you pick them up.
  270. Having trade partners you can trust to not mug you after you sell them high valued items is (IMO) one of the most valuable assets you can have in this game. You can find people in the trade forum or you can pm me (Multipass [1955315]) and I will intro you to mine : )

  282. Jobs Advice for New Players
  283.
  284. From our old friend Jombar:
  285.
  286. Afternoon,
  287.
  288. While working in a company is great as they pay you lots more than the 6 generic jobs that Torn offers they are not necessarily the best option for your starting working stats.
  289.
  290.
  291.
  292. In a company you only gain 2 working stats per day. In Generics you get gains in all 3
  293.
  294. You may get some decent specials in a company but the passives you get from the Generics stay with you forever once unlocked.
  295.
  296. IMHO I would get my working stats up to the education requirements. Work your way through those levels until you can get to headtecher --> 10% reduction in education length.
  297.
  298. http://www.torn.com/wiki/Jobs
  299.
  300. I would stay in education until you can use the specials to boost your work stats up to the fed judge requirement. Go into law and work your way to Fed judge --> Crime experience. 40 days I believe if you have the stats before you start.
  301.
  302. Now move to medical and get to the top level --> ability to revive another 40 days, you already meet the requirements as you have Fed judge stats.
  303.
  304. Finally move to the army and work your way through to General. Here you will gain 10 points per day and will be able to train defence. Save 1000 jp's and exchange them all for a defence boost depending on your stats you can gain between 1m and 3m def. You can also stay another 100 days and get the spy merit by spying peoples stats. Which will also net you another 4k man 2.5k Int and 2k End
  305.
  306. Once you are done with the generics quit wait a day and then get the annoying employers (affronted) merit.
  307.
  308. http://www.torn.com/forums.php#!p=threads&f=61&t=15928011&b=0&a=0
  309.
  310. Now go off to a company with between 12k and 20k in each of your 3 stats.
  311.
  312. This takes about 300 days to accomplish and yes you will miss out on those trains and money but you will have a good baseline in all three stats instead of 2 will have gained 3 brilliant passive abilities and a merit.
  313.
  314. Your game your play style but I thought I'd let you know.
