- Form of Passive Sentences
- ---
- Every passive includes a form of “be” and the past participle of the main verb.
- We can use the passive in (almost) every tense, by changing the form of “be”.
- ---
- The subject of a passive sentence is the receiver of the verb, so verbs that have no receiver cannot be passive. (These verbs are intransitive.)
- ---
- p. 216 - Is each sentence here passive or not?
- ---
- p. 218 exercise 5 - With your partner, change each sentence to passive (in the same tense).
- 1 is opened
- 2 is being opened
- 3 has been opened
- 4 was opened
- 5 was being opened
- 6 had been opened
- 7 will be opened
- 8 is going to be opened
- 9 will have been opened
- 10 Was the door opened
- 11 Will the door be opened
- 12 Has the door been opened
- ---
- Future progressive and all perfect progressive forms are uncommon with [be] passives (because “be being” and “been being” sound strange). However, they are common with “get” passives.
- ---
- Exercise 6 - Answer these questions with your partner. Use the passive voice.
- ---
- Homework: p. 218 exercise 7 - put a check mark next to every correct sentence
