  5. "What's a waifu, Anon?"
  6. >You peered over his desk, trying to avoid catching the attention of Mr. Doodle
  7. >You'd kind of hoped to copy what he was writing
  8. >You weren't really paying attention-
  9. >You weren't used to paying attention
  10. >Learning?
  11. >Education?
  12. >You went through that in Equestria
  13. >A thousand years ago
  14. >You didn't want to have to do that all again
  15. >But... Uhh... Recent events meant you had no choice
  16. >You were stuck as... This...
  17. >In this school
  18. >And the people here seemed...
  19. >Well, not nice
  20. >Not nice to you anyway
  21. >You had noticed Anon scribbling away at his book
  22. >You kind of thought you'd missed something whilst you were daydreaming
  23. >But... Well...
  24. >You didn't pretend to know about chemistry
  25. >But you'd never heard of the word 'waifu' before, you weren't really sure what it had to do with-
  26. >What did that say?
  27. >'Forces of attraction'?
  28. >Anon quickly closed his book as he noticed you looking over
  29. >He gave you a troubled look
  30. >His green cheeks turned red
  31. >His eyes darting around the room
  32. >Oh
  33. >...Well
  34. >That was okay
  35. >You were used to people being this way around you
  36. >You just wanted to copy his work
  37. >Was that so much to ask?
  38. >But you couldn't make heads nor tails of it
  39. >All you could point out was that word
  40. >But you trusted Anon!
  41. >He was smart!
  42. >It had to have something to do with chemistry, right?
  43. >You turn back to your own desk as you began to write in your book
  44. >'Waifu'
  45. >Yeah, that was good
  46. >Enough 'work' from you for today
  47. >You placed your pen back down on the desk, leaning back in your chair
  48. >Mr. Doodle just talked at the front of the class
  49. >Anon was looking at you
  50. >Just talked
  51. >Anon was still looking at you
  52. >That's all he seemed to do, talk about... Boring things
  53. >Anon was looking right at you
  54. >Wait-
  55. >What?
  56. >Not behind you, right at you
  57. >You looked at him, he turned away again
  58. >Oh
  59. >For a moment then, you thought he wanted to-
  60. >No, maybe you were mistaken
  61. >Maybe he wasn't looking over at you
  62. ####################################
  63. "What's a waifu?"
  64. >You asked, sitting down as you passed Adagio and Aria their trays, placing your own at your seat
  65. >They both looked at you from across the table confused as you sat opposite them
  66. "It was part of the chemistry assignment. It needs to be in before the end of the week."
  67. >You said, taking a bite from your apple
  68. >"Don't get too comfortable, we're only staying here for as long as we need."
  69. >You swallowed
  70. "Oh."
  71. >You took another bite, looking over at the two
  72. >Who...
  73. >Hadn't even touched their food
  74. >Not hungry?
  75. >Why did they ask for it in the first place?
  76. "Will that be before or after I have to hand in my assignment?"
  77. >Aria sighed, resting her head in her crossed arms on the table
  78. >"Your assignment doesn't matter! The moment that portal opens again, we're leaving."
  79. >Leaving?
  80. >Leaving this place?
  81. "But I-"
  82. >So much had changed
  83. >You were beginning to make friends
  84. >Well, they wouldn't hang out with you
  85. >They weren't friends like these two
  86. >But they were still... Friends
  87. >Not all of them hated you
  88. >Or feared you
  89. >Or... Whatever
  90. "I kind of like it here now."
  91. >The two of you looked at you, eyes wide and mouth agape
  92. >Was it something you said?
  93. >"You what?"
  94. >Adagio asked in disbelief
  95. >"This is what I was talking about..."
  96. >Aria said under her breath
  97. >"Do you want to die here?"
  98. >Was that a trick question?
  99. >If you liked it here
  100. >And you wanted to stay here then...
  101. >Yeah
  102. >That would mean dying here
  103. "I wouldn't mind it."
  104. >Adagio stood up, arms reaching across to your side of the table
  105. >"Do you want to go back to the way it was? Before I found you-"
  106. >She turned to look at Aria
  107. >"Both of you? Alone? Hungry? On the brink of death?"
  108. >Her face was closer to yours now
  109. >Glaring at you
  110. >A fire in her eyes
  111. >It didn't work the same way as it did before any more...
  112. >But it was still pretty scary
  113. "I don't want to go hungry again."
  114. >You whimpered
  115. >She sat back down
  116. >"That's what I thought."
  117. >You took another bite out of your apple
  118. >...You really did like apples
  119. >They were great!
  120. >Hmm... If the other's didn't want there's then-
  121. >You stopped your train of though as you spotted Anon leaving the cafeteria
  122. >Anon!
  123. >You still need to know what a 'waifu' is!
  124. >You got up off your seat-
  125. >Snatching the two, red, juicy apples from Adagio and Aria
  126. >They didn't even bat an eyelid
  127. >You headed out the door, an apple in each and one clenched in your teeth
  128. >The hallway was empty
  129. >Where was Ano-
  130. >Oh, no, there he was
  131. >Looking through his locker
  132. "Ahmn."
  133. >You muffled, your mouth full with apple
  134. >He hadn't noticed you
  135. "Anhmm!"
  136. >You yelled
  137. >He turned and looked at you!
  138. >Maybe you should... Drop the apple for a moment
  139. >But... But where
  140. >Awkwardly, you grabbed hold the apple in your mouth with two fingers
  141. >Your hands full of apples, you called again
  142. "Anon!"
  143. >That certainly got his attention!
  144. >His eyes widened
  145. >His lips trembled slightly
  146. >"Yeah?..."
  147. >He asked as you got closer to him
  148. >He backed away, ever so slightly
  149. >But you kept getting closer
  150. >What's he doing?
  151. >You just want to talk
  152. >You wanted to reach a hand out but...
  153. >Uhh... They were preoccupied right now
  154. "Anon, you never told me. What's a waifu?"
  155. >"Why do you want to know?"
  156. >Oh
  157. >You weren't really sure how he was going to react to this
  158. >You wanted to make friends
  159. >And if you let him know that you weren't paying attention!...
  160. >Well, that might ruin any chance of being friends with him
  161. >Who'd want to be friends with someone like THAT?
  162. "I wasn't really... Paying attention in class."
  163. >You said, lowering your head in shame
  164. >You should be ashamed
  165. >You awful, awful person
  166. >"What?"
  167. >He asked
  168. >You flinched but...
  169. >He wasn't asking in disbelief
  170. >It was more like... He was confused
  171. >And so were you
  172. "Well, I need to get this assignment done and I wasn't paying attention so can you just tell me?"
  173. >"No it's got nothing to do with the assignment..."
  174. >Oh
  175. >It doesn't?
  176. "Then why were you writing it down?"
  177. >What was he implying?
  178. >That he wasn't paying attention in lesson?!
  179. >But Anon was smart
  180. >He wasn't the kind of person to get distracted!
  181. >"It's nothing, don't worry about it."
  182. "But you've made me curious now! I need to know!"
  183. >You stomped your foot on the ground
  184. >He sighed
  185. >"A waifu is someone that I-"
  186. >He stopped
  187. >Why did he stop?
  188. >...Keep going Anon...
  189. >"You might love."
  190. "Ooohhh!"
  191. >You said, a smile beaming on your face
  192. "Like uh... Like a 'girlfriend' or something?"
  193. >You said, winking
  194. >He just chuckled
  195. >"Yeah, kind of like that."
  196. >K-kind of?
  197. >...Strange human man
  198. "Do you have a waifu?"
  199. >He stopped smiling
  200. >He just looked at you
  201. >For... Quite a while
  202. >He didn't say anything
  203. >Just looked
  204. >The school bell rang
  205. >Oh!
  206. >New lesson!
  207. "What have I got next?"
  208. >He shrugged, turning around to walk in the opposite direction
  209. >"I have no idea."
  210. >Oh...
  211. >Well, you could check
  212. >It didn't matter, you supposed
  213. >You reached around for your bag and-
  214. >Oh no!
  215. >You still had two... And a half apples to eat
  216. >You didn't want to waste them
  217. >Anon might be hungry
  218. >Anon might like apples
  219. "Anon!"
  220. >He turned around to look back at you and sighed
  221. "Catch!"
  222. >You threw the apple in your left hand, apologising as it landed square in between his eyes
  223. ###########################################################################################
  224. >It was cold
  225. >Cold and wet
  226. >You'd not slept in the rain yet
  227. >Not slept in the rain like this, of course
  228. >Normally you'd magic up some shelter...
  229. >But no
  230. >Not any more
  231. >It hadn't rained in...
  232. >Come to think of it, you can't remember the last time it rained
  233. >Funny that
  234. >So instead, you were all huddled for warmth
  235. >...
  236. >Okay, that was a lie
  237. >You wish you were huddled for warmth
  238. >The three of you were sat in some alleyway
  239. >Backs against the wall
  240. >Adagio and Aria opposite you
  241. >Just like back in the Cafeteria!
  242. >Only without the food
  243. >And the warmth
  244. >And air conditioning
  245. >And lights
  246. >And other people around
  247. >And the occasional song that'd break out
  248. >You liked the cafeteria
  249. >You didn't like the alleyway
  250. >Well, there were better alleyways
  251. >There were worse alleyways
  252. >But none of them compared to the school
  253. >Or... Any indoor building
  254. >Back in Equestria, you'd sleep in the ocean
  255. >You could do that when you had gills
  256. >Now you didn't
  257. >So now you couldn't
  258. >You wish you could
  259. >You missed sleeping in the water
  260. >The feeling of weightlessness
  261. >Just floating
  262. >It was relaxing
  263. >You did want to get some work done
  264. >Some math would have been nice
  265. >But you didn't want to get it wet
  266. >And... To be honest, Aria didn't much like you working
  267. >Maybe you could all... Talk
  268. >You didn't talk much these days
  269. >You missed the days when you talked
  270. "So..."
  271. >You said
  272. >...
  273. >...You stopped
  274. >This was normally the part where someone else talked
  275. >They didn't even look at you
  276. >They were both sat against the wall in the fetal position
  277. >Arms around their legs
  278. >Just looking down
  279. >You just wanted to talk
  280. "We should buy a tent."
  281. >"With what?"
  282. >Adagio was right
  283. >You had no money
  284. >And no way of making money
  285. >Then...
  286. >Do what you did before when you wanted something!
  287. >Like these clothes
  288. "We could... Steal a tent!"
  289. >"How?"
  290. >Well... Aria got you there
  291. >No magic
  292. >No stealing
  293. >No magical stealing
  294. >Time was, people could just give you what you wanted when you asked for it
  295. >You were confused for... Ages!
  296. >And then Adagio had to explain that's not how the world worked
  297. >You always thought it was weird that people just gave you stuff for free
  298. >Not like Equestria
  299. >Until she told you it was the singing
  300. "We could-"
  301. >...What else could you do?
  302. >Can't buy a tent
  303. >Or steal a tent
  304. >You could always...
  305. "Make a tent?"
  306. >That Rarity girl made clothes!
  307. >She MADE clothes!
  308. >How hard could it be to make a tent?
  309. >"How?"
  310. >Well, you didn't know
  311. >How did they expect you to know everything?
  312. >You weren't saying you knew how to do everything!
  313. >You were just making conversation
  314. >It was better than sitting in silence
  315. >Where the rain was the only thing keeping you company
  316. "At least a sleeping bag?"
  317. >You said, rubbing your bare arms
  318. "I'm cold."
  319. >Adagio sighed
  320. >"We're all cold."
  321. >Well... You didn't know that either
  322. "I'm hungry."
  323. >"We're all hungry."
  324. >There was no pleasing these two
  325. >If they're hungry they only have themselves to blame
  326. "Well you two didn't eat your lunch!"
  327. >You yelled across to the two of them
  328. >Their eyes did that...
  329. >They did that thing where they moved their eyebrows
  330. >Pulled that face
  331. >That face was usually followed by someone yelling
  332. >One of the two
  333. >Or the both
  334. >Or neither
  335. >Sometimes they would just stay quiet
  336. >"Not that kind of hungry you-"
  337. >This was not one of those times
  338. >"Just get some sleep Sonata."
  339. >Okay
  340. >You'll get some sleep
  341. >But because you want to get some sleep!
  342. >Not because they want you to go to sleep
  343. >You were tired
  344. >And maybe this'd take your mind of being hungry
  345. >You were really... Really hungry
  346. "I should have saved that apple."
  347. >You said, lying down on your side resting your head on your hands
  348. >Resting your hands on the stone floor
  349. >At the moment, you'd even go so far as to have a pillow
  350. >Nothing fancy
  351. >Just something to rest on
  352. >You closed your eyes, trying best you could to get some sleep
  353. >...
  354. >You lay there
  355. >You weren't sure how long it had been
  356. >You just lay there
  357. >Until you heard a sigh
  358. >A long sigh
  359. >"What are we going to do with her Aria?"
  360. >It was Adagio
  361. >They were...
  362. >They were talking about you?
  363. >You didn't open your eyes
  364. >You just kept them shut
  365. >You just listened
  366. >It was good to listen
  367. >Good to hear your friends talking
  368. >"We've stuck with her all this time, we'll just keep going."
  369. >Aria responded
  370. >They were talking about you, weren't they
  371. >"It's not the same any more. I'm not sure how much longer she'll survive like this."
  372. >Adagio sighed
  373. >That's all you could hear
  374. >Another sigh
  375. >"To be fair, Adagio, it's your fault."
  376. >"My fa-!"
  377. >Adagio began to yell, before Aria shushed her
  378. >"My fault? I'm so sorry I took you in, I'm so sorry I looked after you two for years, I'm so sorry that I gave you what you wanted."
  379. >It was true
  380. >She had...
  381. >She was almost like family
  382. >They both were
  383. >Ever since-
  384. >Since you didn't have a family
  385. >Ever since you were a kid
  386. >They did everything for you
  387. >They gave you the gems
  388. >And taught you how to sing
  389. >And... Everything else
  390. >They were good friends
  391. >"She was just a kid. She might as well still be a kid."
  392. >Just a kid?
  393. >Your not a kid
  394. >Not any more
  395. >You haven't been a kid for years
  396. >Not since you were...
  397. >...A kid
  398. >It was such a long time ago now
  399. >"It's still not my fault that she never listens."
  400. >What were you doing right now?
  401. >Listening
  402. >You were listening
  403. >You showed her!
  404. >Take that Adagio!
  405. >Well...
  406. >Maybe you didn't want to make that obvious
  407. >"You didn't raise her properly! You were always talking about food but you couldn't see that she was still a kid."
  408. >But that didn't matter
  409. >You liked food
  410. >And you hated being a kid!
  411. >You hated everyone treating you like a kid!
  412. >At least Adagio treated you like an adult!
  413. >What did Aria do?
  414. >Always treating you like a kid
  415. >Always calling you stupid
  416. >Or the worst
  417. >"It didn't matter. We were going to be fine-
  418. >"Were. That's the important part. Were. We're not any more and we never will be."
  419. >What was she saying?
  420. >You-
  421. >You were going to be okay, right?
  422. >"We will be okay, right?"
  423. >Aria obviously had the same idea as you
  424. >"You don't actually know when the portal's going to open, do you?"
  425. >She continued
  426. >All you heard was another sigh from Adagio
  427. >"No."
  428. >N-no?
  429. >So after everything they said
  430. >After telling you not to get comfortable
  431. >And they didn't even know whether they were going home or not!
  432. >"How long do you think we'll last?"
  433. >You might die here
  434. >"A year, if we're lucky."
  435. >You might actually die here
  436. >"It'll probably get harder near the end."
  437. >Of course, you'd considered it but-
  438. >You didn't really know what you were thinking
  439. >You didn't really want to die here
  440. >You kind of wanted to stay here
  441. >But live her for...
  442. >Much longer than a year!
  443. >You heard faint sobbing, though you couldn't tell who it was
  444. >"I don't want to go through that again."
  445. >Aria, in between sobs
  446. >She was...
  447. >You hadn't heard her cry
  448. >Not for...
  449. >You weren't sure of the last time you heard her cry
  450. >"I know, I know, I don't either."
  451. >Adagio said, a soothing voice
  452. >It wasn't the same as her old voice
  453. >Her singing voice
  454. >But it was enough
  455. >Aria calmed, her crying slowly coming to an end
  456. >She sniffed
  457. >"Sonata's the lucky one."
  458. >Lucky?
  459. >Oh... Well, you never really thought you were lucky
  460. >You'd been through a lot in your life
  461. >Not a lot of it felt like it was... Good
  462. >"She has no idea how bad it gets."
  463. >How ba-
  464. >Bad?...
  465. >How bad what gets?
  466. >They had to be doing this on purpose
  467. >They were... They were scaring you
  468. >Trying to scare you
  469. >Yeah
  470. >It- It wasn't working
  471. >Obviously
  472. >Maybe you should wake up
  473. >Or, open your eyes
  474. >Maybe they'll tell you it was all a prank
  475. >Maybe they knew you were awake all along
  476. >Yeah...
  477. >Yeah, of course
  478. >Slowly, you opened your eyes
  479. >Forced a smile on your face and let out a yawn
  480. >You don't know what time it is, but it's dark
  481. >You must've been asleep for a few hours then...
  482. >They must've been sat in silence for a few hours
  483. >Were they awake all that time too?
  484. >They looked troubled
  485. >Of course they would
  486. >But... You didn't want them to know that you knew what they knew
  487. >...Yeah
  488. "What's up?"
  489. >You said, trying to put on a cheery voice
  490. >"Nothing, Sonata. Just..."
  491. >Aria began
  492. >She stopped, rubbing her eyes of the remaining tears
  493. >She looked over at Adagio
  494. >She was just sat there
  495. >Looking down at the floor
  496. >"Just go back to sleep."
  497. >She concluded
  498. >Aria shuffled around as she led on her side
  499. >Adagio didn't join her
  500. >She was just sat, unmoving
  501. >Looking down at the floor
  502. >...The floor must've been pretty interesting
  503. >You might as well get some sleep
  504. #################################
  505. >A hand slammed on your desk
  506. >"Ms. Dusk!"
  507. >You shot up!
  508. >Okay, okay, okay!
  509. >You were awake!
  510. >...You were...
  511. >Where were you again?
  512. >Oh... English
  513. >You were tired
  514. >You were hungry
  515. >And you were in English
  516. >No wonder you were falling asleep in class
  517. >It was just your own bad luck that you sat right at the front of the class
  518. >You couldn't exactly hide
  519. >You wanted to pay attention - you really did
  520. >You wanted to be good at this school thing
  521. >You wanted to make friends
  522. >But you just couldn't
  523. >Sleeping on the streets...
  524. >In the cold...
  525. >In the rain...
  526. >It wasn't helping your education
  527. >You-
  528. >Maybe you could tell someone
  529. >The principle?
  530. >One of the teachers?
  531. >After last night, you didn't want to spend another day without shelter
  532. >But who'd trust you?
  533. >After everything you did?
  534. >...Who could you turn to?
  535. >The only friends you had were stuck in the same situation as you
  536. >What about...
  537. >Them
  538. >Those girls
  539. >The one's you tried to steal magic from
  540. >...Yeah, maybe not
  541. >Ms. Velvet was still looking at you
  542. >Probably expecting an answer or something
  543. >You were too tired to even give that
  544. >You rubbed your eyes
  545. >"Not enough sleep, Ms. Dusk?"
  546. >She asked, forcefully
  547. >You just nodded
  548. >You couldn't even speak
  549. >You rubbed your eyes again
  550. >"Then I would advise you had a good nights rest, Ms. Dusk."
  551. >What a...
  552. >What a... Bitch!
  553. >Did she know what you were going through?
  554. >No, no she didn't
  555. >You wish you could get a good night's sleep
  556. >You really do
  557. >And the thought of another night like the last made you want to cry
  558. >No
  559. >Not now
  560. >When everyone's looking?
  561. >Hold it back, Sonata
  562. >You can do it
  563. >Be brave, for now
  564. >But even when class ended, you couldn't do it
  565. >You didn't want everyone around you to notice you crying
  566. >And you knew that if you were...
  567. >None of them would come talk to you
  568. >None of them would ask what's the matter
  569. >And even if you told them, they wouldn't know what you were talking about
  570. >They wouldn't understand
  571. >So, you were still holding back the tears
  572. >Occasionally rubbing your eyes to wipe away what little tears escape
  573. >Don't think about it, Sonata
  574. >...Try not to think about it, Sonata
  575. >It'll be okay
  576. >You keep telling yourself it'll be okay
  577. >But you don't know
  578. >You don't even know where to begin to try and fix this
  579. >You'd have to talk to the other two
  580. >Tell them...
  581. >Well...
  582. >There had to be something you could do!
  583. >Stay in the school?
  584. >Try not to get caught?
  585. >Anything to avoid another night in the co-
  586. >A bump
  587. >A thud
  588. >And you landed on your behind
  589. >That's what you get for not looking where you're going
  590. >You rub your slightly watery eyes once more and look up
  591. >"Oh my god! I'm so sorry I-"
  592. >It was Anon!-
  593. >Huh, fancy that
  594. >And he was apologising profusely
  595. >"S-Sonata?"
  596. >He asked, reaching out a hand
  597. >Now he wasn't apologising profusely any more
  598. >He could barely get your name out, he was stuttering so much
  599. "It was my fault, don't worry!"
  600. >You said grabbing hold of his hand as he pulled you up off the ground
  601. >You brushed yourself off and rubbed your sore noise that had felt the full force of the impact
  602. >Ouch
  603. >You were going to be feeling that in the morning
  604. >Oh, and your behind hurt a bit too...
  605. >That was also kind of important
  606. >Anon just looked at you
  607. >And you just looked at him
  608. >...Was he going to move?
  609. >Or say anything?
  610. >Or... Do anything?
  611. >Or was he-
  612. >Oh, right!
  613. "Thanks, Anon."
  614. >Maybe he was waiting for yo-
  615. >No...
  616. >Still just... Looking at you
  617. >Was there something on your face?
  618. >You scrunched up your face as best you could, shaking it left and right, rubbing your hand over it
  619. >Trying to get whatever it was on your face off
  620. >When you opened your eyes again, he was smiling
  621. >Just smiling
  622. >Still looking at you
  623. "Did I get it?"
  624. >He looked at you blankly, still smiling
  625. >Until he shook suddenly shook his head
  626. >"What?"
  627. >...Anon was a bit slow, wasn't he?
  628. >Maybe he wasn't as smart as you thought
  629. "I'm gonna go off to... Class now..."
  630. >You said, pointing behind him
  631. >He just nodded
  632. >Didn't say anything, just nodded and stepped to the side
  633. >Anon was a bit... Strange
  634. >You didn't really notice this before
  635. >You always thought he was smart
  636. >Now he just seems... Strange
  637. >Like he wasn't very talkative
  638. >Or maybe he just didn't want to talk to you
  639. >Well, you wouldn't be surprised
  640. >But you did see him smile a lot
  641. >You smiled a lot too
  642. >When you weren't tired
  643. >And hungry
  644. >And upset
  645. >But, you supposed, seeing someone else smile made you kind of... Happy
  646. >Made you want to smile too
  647. >Yeah!
  648. >Having people who smiled around you made you smile too
  649. >You just wish you could have smiled when you saw Anon
  650. >Rather than looking... Miserable
  651. >But maybe if you smiled around your friends-
  652. >Around Adagio and Aria then you could get them to smile too!
  653. >Yeah!
  654. >Maybe you could make them happy
  655. >Make them forget about their problems
  656. >And then the three of you could do something to solve it
  657. >Together, as friends
  658. >You'd like that
  659. ################
  660. >Lunch!
  661. >Tuesday!
  662. >Tuesday was your favourite day!
  663. >Tacos!
  664. >Tacos for everyone!
  665. >Well, mostly Tacos for yourself
  666. >Tacos for your two friends too!
  667. >They'd not ever had a Taco
  668. >Today, you were going to make them smile
  669. >And you were going to give them something delicious to eat!
  670. >Three tacos
  671. >Three drinks
  672. >Three apples
  673. >Three trays!
  674. >Good
  675. >Lunch was served
  676. >You got back to the table that Adagio and Aria were sat at
  677. >They still looked miserable
  678. >Just like they did yesterday
  679. >And last night
  680. >You were going to change that
  681. >Turn that frown upside down
  682. >"What's this?"
  683. >Aria said, poking her taco with a slender finger
  684. "Uh, duh. Tacos! Tacos Tuesday! Eat up!"
  685. >The two girls glanced at one another
  686. >You just smiled
  687. >If you smiled, they would smile
  688. >"We're not hungry."
  689. >...They weren't smiling
  690. >Why weren't they smiling?
  691. "But you said you wer-"
  692. >"No! Not that kind of hungry!"
  693. >You weren't giving up that easily!
  694. >Keep on smiling Sonata
  695. >Don't let them get to you
  696. "Suit yourself."
  697. >You looked down at the food in front of you
  698. >The delicious...!
  699. >Warm...!
  700. >Uhh...
  701. >Taco!
  702. >...You weren't good at describing things
  703. >You picked it up, holding it in both hands
  704. >Licking your lips with anticipation
  705. >You opened your mouth wide, and took the first bite...
  706. >...
  707. >It wasn't right
  708. >It was different than it was last week
  709. >Then again, last week was different than the week before
  710. >And the week before that
  711. >And the week before that
  712. >They were never the same
  713. >Always... Worse than the week before
  714. >Maybe it was just your one!
  715. >You reached over for Aria's taco
  716. >If she wasn't having it, then you would
  717. >Like their apples yesterday
  718. >You'd probably have their apples again too if they didn't want them
  719. >You took a bite out of the second taco...!
  720. >It was the same
  721. >Just as ba-
  722. >"It won't satisfy you."
  723. >Adagio interrupted your thought
  724. >"Do you see now?"
  725. >She continued
  726. >She wasn't annoyed or angry or yelling...
  727. >Not like usual
  728. >She was... Friendly
  729. >She sounded 'concerned'?
  730. >You'd not heard her concerned
  731. >Was that the best way to put it?
  732. >You didn't really know
  733. >Adagio was just looking at you
  734. >She was.. Expecting a response
  735. >But you weren't sure what to say
  736. >"Give it up, she's not going to get it."
  737. >"You wanted me to do this, so I'm going to try my best."
  738. >Was this about... Last night?
  739. >What they said last night?
  740. >The two of them bickered
  741. >But you weren't paying attention
  742. >You were just thinking
  743. >Hungry...
  744. >You were hungry
  745. >It's weird
  746. >You didn't think you were hungry
  747. >You'd just eaten food
  748. >If you were hungry... Why wouldn't eating food help?
  749. >Even if the food didn't taste good
  750. >Why wouldn't it help?
  751. >You thought about last night
  752. >About what they said
  753. >They said...
  754. >They...
  755. >Damnit!
  756. >You can't remember what they said...
  757. >You-
  758. >You were lucky!
  759. >Or something
  760. >You didn't seem lucky
  761. >Maybe that was just Aria
  762. >Aria tricking you
  763. >You didn't know if you could trust her
  764. >And yet...
  765. >She was beginning to make sense
  766. >Both of them were
  767. "I'm still hungry."
  768. >They stopped
  769. >Adagio looked over to you once again
  770. >There was that look again
  771. >The one when she was concerned
  772. >She nodded
  773. "Foods not helping."
  774. >She shook her head
  775. >"Food was never helping, not this human earth food at least. It was always the spell."
  776. "I know it was the spell. I'm not... I'm not stupid."
  777. >Aria rolled her eyes
  778. "But I thought food helped. Food would help to live a normal life. In a normal house. With normal people."
  779. >You could still do that, right?
  780. >They wanted to go home
  781. >But you didn't mind living here
  782. >Living a normal life
  783. >With other people
  784. >With friends...
  785. >C-could you still do that?
  786. "Will it get better?"
  787. >"If we can get back home."
  788. >Well...
  789. >That was all well and good, but that didn't matter right now
  790. >If you could all get back home - yeah!
  791. >That'd solve all your problems!
  792. >How easy was that?
  793. >Well, from what you overheard last night, not very
  794. >So there was a more important problem...
  795. "What do we do tonight?"
  796. >Adagio shrugged
  797. >...Aria shrugged
  798. >Really?
  799. >That was it
  800. >They weren't even going to... Say anything?
  801. "Can we go somewhere that... Isn't an alleyway tonight?"
  802. >"I'm all ears if you have any suggestions."
  803. >Well...
  804. >...Well
  805. >You didn't know exactly
  806. >But maybe...
  807. "Can we stay here tonight? Find somewhere quiet? Somewhere warm?"
  808. >Adagio's eyes widened
  809. >"Here? We can't possibly stay here. The teachers live here."
  810. >They-
  811. >Do they?
  812. >No they don't
  813. >You didn't think they did
  814. "Are you sure?"
  815. >You asked, confused
  816. >The two of them just nodded
  817. >"Do you ever see the teachers leave the school?"
  818. >Adagio began
  819. >"Or arrive in the morning?"
  820. >Aria continued
  821. >"Have you ever seen how they get here?"
  822. >"Or how they get 'home'?"
  823. >"They're not like the students, they live here."
  824. >They both leant back on their seats, arms folded across their chest
  825. >Are they being serious?
  826. >You're not the sharpest tool in the shed
  827. >But... This?
  828. >Of course they didn't live in the school!
  829. "They really don't live here."
  830. >"Don't be so stupid Sonata, only an idiot denies what's in front of her."
  831. >But-!
  832. >But you were right!
  833. >You didn't pretend to know... Everything, but you knew this!
  834. >How did they not?
  835. "I'm not stupid!"
  836. >"Yes you are!"
  837. >You didn't like it when they called you stupid
  838. >Especially when you were right!
  839. "Fine! I'll stay here tonight and you two can go to the alleyway!"
  840. >You got up, taking your apple and leaving the cafeteria
  841. >Again
  842. >...You didn't like doing this, but they weren't listening to you
  843. >"No, Sonata we-"
  844. >Adagio called out, but she stopped
  845. >Good
  846. >You weren't listening anyway
  847. >You just kept going
  848. >You were going to show them
  849. >You were going to stay in the school!
  850. >And so you did
  851. >You were certain you were going to stay here for the night
  852. >In the warm, sheltered school
  853. >It didn't matter if you were on your own
  854. >Or if you still didn't have a tent
  855. >Or a sleeping bag
  856. >Or anything
  857. >It was better than being out in the cold
  858. >You'd last longer in the shelter
  859. >...Well, you knew you'd last a year "at best" out in the cold
  860. >You wanted more than that
  861. >Whatever the cost!
  862. >Just as the remaining students left the school, you made your way around the school
  863. >Looking for a room you could stay in
  864. >And, most importantly, a room that you could stay in and not get caught
  865. >If it turned out the teachers really did live in the school!
  866. >And after... Not much searching, you think you found somewhere
  867. >A small room
  868. >Exterior windows
  869. >None of these... Fancy... Inside windows that let you look in the room from the corridor
  870. >A small... Stage to the right of the door?
  871. >Okay, suit yourself
  872. >A a large, sliding mirror to the opposite side!
  873. >You could sleep on the stage, and you'd be looking at yourself
  874. >You'd have your reflection for company!
  875. >...That seemed kind of sad, now you thought about it
  876. >You wanted your friends for company
  877. >But they didn't want you
  878. >They'd change their mind
  879. >When you told them how GREAT this was!
  880. >When you told them that staying in the school was the BEST!
  881. >Yeah!
  882. >They'd be so jealous
  883. >...
  884. >So...
  885. >What did you do now?
  886. >It was still light out
  887. >There was no way you could get to sleep
  888. >And no way you could... Work out how to close the blinds...
  889. >You took a seat at the edge of the small stage, looking over at the room
  890. >The mirror opposite you caught your immediate attention
  891. >Not just because it was a mirror
  892. >But because it was a cupboard, and you wanted to know what was inside it!
  893. >You'd not been in this room before, you had no idea
  894. >It could be ANYTHING!
  895. >No really, anything!
  896. >There might be a bed!
  897. >Or a pillow!
  898. >Or a sleeping bag!
  899. >It would have been here all along
  900. >And you would have just stumbled upon it
  901. >You walked over to the mirror, holding the handle and pulling the whole section across as hard as you could
  902. >It was heavier than you thought, but you managed it!
  903. >And now you could take a peek at what was-
  904. >Oh...
  905. >It wasn't a bed
  906. >Or a sleeping bag
  907. >Or a pillow
  908. >Or... Whatever else you wanted
  909. >It was a bunch of instruments
  910. >Instruments
  911. >Microphones
  912. >Speakers
  913. >Uhh... Cables
  914. >All sorts of musical related... Things
  915. >That would explain the stage
  916. >And the mirror
  917. >And... The... Outlets across the walls...
  918. >You bent down and picked up one of the microphones
  919. >A familiar feeling in the palm of your hand
  920. >You wanted to just... Sing!
  921. >Like the old days!
  922. >Let it all out!
  923. >Sing as loud as you could!
  924. >But... You couldn't anymore-
  925. >And even if you could, you might wake any potential sleeping teachers-
  926. >But you couldn't
  927. >Not any more
  928. >You placed your free hand around your neck
  929. >Where the jewel that you had for...
  930. >For longer years... For most of your life-
  931. >Where that jewel once was
  932. >And now is gone
  933. >You paced around the room
  934. >Thinking about those times
  935. >You didn't care about the magic
  936. >Or the mind control
  937. >Or the hypnosis
  938. >Or whatever...
  939. >You just wanted to sing
  940. >You loved singing
  941. >Maybe you could...
  942. >You don't know
  943. >Try it for real?
  944. >Try it without 'cheating', kind of?
  945. >You sat back down on the edge of the stage
  946. >Microphone in your right hand, you brought it up to your mouth
  947. >You know it didn't work
  948. >But it didn't feel the same without it
  949. >Quietly, you began
  950. >Just singing to yourself
  951. >Just a relaxing, sooth harmony
  952. "You didn't know that you fell..."
  953. >You were there for hours
  954. >What felt like hours, at least
  955. >Singing your old songs
  956. >The one's you sung with your friends
  957. >And then... Others too
  958. >That girl
  959. >What was her name?
  960. >The blue one
  961. >The one that sung about tricks?
  962. >You can't remember
  963. >But you sung that one too!
  964. >Of course... None of it out loud
  965. >You sung it to yourself
  966. >Quietly
  967. >It was better that way
  968. >That way, you didn't have to embarrass yourself
  969. >That way, you could try and get better
  970. "Come on, you're just making noise, listen how my music destroys, anything you throw at me, I'm gonna throw back, just wait and see!"
  971. >It sounded weird without the actual music, but you could imagine it
  972. >You could picture the tune
  973. >You were in time with it
  974. >Magic couldn't fudge that
  975. >But you still couldn't properly sing it
  976. >And after giving that one a few run overs, you sat back down on the stage
  977. >You were... Quite tired, actually
  978. >You'd been up and about
  979. >Strutting your stuff
  980. >Pretending you were back on stage
  981. >Pretending that the attention was all on you
  982. >But it took a lot out of you, especially after a few hours
  983. >It was good though
  984. >Fun!
  985. >A productive use of your time
  986. >Having fun
  987. >Even if you weren't doing work that you were... Supposed to do
  988. >You'd completely forgot about work
  989. >Your assignments
  990. >Homework
  991. >All sorts
  992. >You were concentrating on the music
  993. >You looked at yourself in the mirror
  994. >Your hair was a bit of a mess, given how much you were swaying it around
  995. >You were almost out of breath, which wasn't helped by being so hungry
  996. >But, most importantly, you realised it was getting darker
  997. >The whole room was darker than it had been
  998. >Maybe you should get some sleep soon
  999. >Maybe you should put away the microphone, leave the room how it was when you arrived and just get some sleep
1000. >Or maybe you had just one last song in you
  1001. >...But what?
1002. >You'd sung all of your songs
1003. >And then even some other people's songs
  1004. >What else was there?
1005. >And then it hit you
  1006. >You remember this song
1007. >You remember it too well...
1008. >You clenched the microphone, tighter than before
1009. >You shot up onto your feet, forgetting that you were just thinking about sleeping
  1010. >Tired?
  1011. >Hungry?
  1012. >Bah!
  1013. >You wanted to sing!
1014. >You walked closer to the mirror
  1015. >Looking your own reflection
1016. >Looking at yourself directly in your eyes
1017. "Your never gonna bring me down..."
1018. >You began, whispering to yourself
1019. "Your never gonna break this part of me, my friends..."
  1020. >You stopped
1021. >And looked around the room
  1022. >You were... Alone
  1023. >Your friends
  1024. >Your friends weren't here...
  1025. >There was only you
1026. >You'd been meaning to cry all day
1027. >You'd been holding that in for hours
1028. >This seemed a time better than any
  1029. >You were warm
  1030. >You were safe
1031. >But what did it matter?
  1032. >You were alone
1033. >You reached out for your own reflection, silently sobbing to yourself
1034. "My friends are here to bring me around..."
  1035. >You whispered between sobs
1036. "Not singing just for popularity..."
  1037. >It was funny
  1038. >Kind of...
1039. >That this song was the end of the line for you...
1040. >This song is the reason why you're cold at night
1041. >Why you have to go home
1042. >Why you have to leave this place
1043. >This song is the reason why you're alone right now whilst your friends are out on the street in some alleyway
1044. >And at the same time, you kind of related to this song more now than ever before
1045. "Got the music in our hearts, we're here to blow this thing apart, and together, we will never, be afraid of the dark..."
  1046. >A chuckle
1047. >A chuckle from behind you
  1048. >Was someone there?
  1049. >One of the teachers?
  1050. >Had they found you
1051. >You turned around to see... Them
1052. >Your friends, stood in the doorway
1053. >"You know, you can't sing like we did before?"
1054. >Adagio asked, a smile on her face
  1055. >A warm smile
  1056. "I know... I just-"
  1057. >She laughed again
  1058. >"Don't worry about it, it's alright."
1059. >The two of them walked into the room, carrying their things with them
  1060. >Oh!
1061. >Looks like they came around after all
1062. >Decided to join you instead of leaving you on your own
1063. >Not that you... REALLY minded
1064. >"I guess you were right..."
1065. >Aria said, as the two of them took a seat on the stage opposite the mirror you had been looking into
  1066. >"For once."
  1067. >Oh
1068. >She couldn't just leave that alone, could she?
1069. >She couldn't just compliment you for once
  1070. "What?"
1071. >You walked over to the two of the, squeezing your way in between them and taking a seat
1072. >The two of them shuffled to accompany your-
  1073. >...You
1074. >To accompany the extra amount of... 'You'
1075. >"The teachers. No sign of any teachers."
  1076. >Oh?
  1077. >Oh!
  1078. >Yeah, you were right!
  1079. >Oh... Good...
1080. >You're kind of relived that you were right about that
1081. >You were beginning to doubt yourself
1082. >Especially since the other two were right like... All the time!
1083. >Well, let's bring that down to... 99% of the time
1084. "How long were you outside?"
  1085. >"A few hours."
1086. >"It's been raining again, so we came and looked for you."
  1087. >It'd been raining?
1088. >Oh, it still was raining
  1089. >You hadn't noticed
1090. >You didn't even think to go and look for them when it began to rain
  1091. "I'm sorry."
1092. >The other two girls blinked in disbelief, looking at one another confused
  1093. >"What for?"
1094. >Adagio asked, putting a hand on your shoulder
  1095. >Well... You-
1096. >You guess you just wanted to say sorry?
  1097. "I don't know. I guess I should have stuck with you."
1098. >Suddenly, she wrapped her arms around you
1099. >You were... Not expecting that
1100. >You don't really remember the last time you had a proper 'hug'
1101. >If this could be called that
1102. >"You were scared and hungry and tired, we should have been with you."
1103. >She said, burring her head into your shoulder
1104. >You returned the hug, wrapping an arm around both of your friends
1105. >Even though Aria wanted to push you away at first
  1106. "If we get-"
  1107. >You stopped
1108. >Not 'if', that wasn't the right attitude
  1109. >When
1110. >That was what you wanted to say
1111. "When we get home, can we be different? Can we be... Good?"
1112. >You could feel Adagio tense her arms around you slightly at the mention of the word
1113. >She... Didn't seem keen on the idea
  1114. >But why not?
1115. >Like what they say; you can't beat them join them!
1116. >And you three got beat pretty easily by the 'good' guys
1117. >With their... Friendship and their magic
  1118. >You had friendship
  1119. >Even if it wasn't perfect
1120. >But not the magic part any more
1121. >Maybe when you got magic again - you could put your friendship to better use
1122. >Aria slid under your arm
1123. >Adagio released you from her grasp, stopping as she looked at you
1124. >And then back at Aria
  1125. >And back to you
  1126. >"We'll see."
1127. >That wasn't really what you wanted to hear
