- Speaking Task 3
- DELTA p. 286 - Take 45 seconds to read the text. What is the announcement about?
- Then listen and take notes about the conversation.
- ---
- “The man expresses his opinion about the campus food service. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.”
- Possible response organization:
- 1 Introduction: summarize the text (real or suggested change, event, or announcement of something that’s already there)
- 2 Thesis (sort of): state the opinion of the speaker
- 3 Lead-in (optional): “He gives two reasons for his opinion.”
- 4 First reason: “First, he says the main cafeteria is always too crowded.”
- 5 Detail/example: “There’s never a place to sit and it’s hard to park a bike outside.”
- 6 Second reason: “Second, he thinks many smaller eating areas will be more convenient.”
- 7 Detail/example: “Students have classes all over campus, so it will be easier to…”
- (8 Conclusion - if you have extra time)

- Homework (optional): If you want more feedback on yesterday’s writing (than a score and a sentence or two), email me with a self-evaluation. You can use the official score descriptions at https://www.ets.org/s/toefl/pdf/toefl_writing_rubrics.pdf to help you identify what’s good and bad about your response. (You can send me a score estimate as well, though that isn’t necessary.)
