  1. Dear loving family: I pen these lines to you while under intense enemy fire, we crossed the River Nina today at two o’ clock in the afternoon and shortly there after came into contact with the hated foe, all around me one can hear the chipping of rounds as they come sailing in and knocking the blooms off the trees, sometimes one splatters with a lout ‘Splat’ we have learned to hug the ground and pray the Rosary while the deadly rounds fly above are heads. We can only stand up for a minute or two and unloaded a few dozen in the general direction we think they are firing from, there calls for a informal cease fire to escorted the ‘wounded’ and ‘Dead’ from the playing field tells us that we are indeed inflicting a heavy toll upon them.
  2.
  3. As grand as this might seem, it’s a curse for though we are holding are small section of the bank, they hold the most of the field, they have room to bring in more players, and to supply those dug in only a few dozen yards in front of us with warm food and blankets to shelter them from the brewing rainstorm that hangs over are heads like a ark omen. While we are forced to cook are canned corn beef over a open fire and dip into the muddy waters of the Nina for refreshment.
  4.
  5. I shall write you when I can, till then I send all my love to you.
  6.
  7. Your loving brother.
