  14. Script notes: The wife's lines are marked as W, the nurse are N. The gender of the nurse is unspecified. The nurse only has lines for the first half of the script.
  15.
  16.
  17. *knock, door opens*
  18. *distant, talking from across the room*
  19. N: Good morning! I'm your new nurse, coming in to check up on you.
  20.
  21. *closer*
  22. N: Hello, I'm nurse <name>. I'll be taking over for the day shift.
  23. W: *yawns* 'Morning
  24. N: Let me take a look at your chart here. *pause* Okay, coma for the last sixteen days. Anything happen over the night?
  25. W: About an hour ago, he started moaning, woke me right up. I thought maybe he was trying to talk, but he stopped when I started talking to him.
  26. N: That's very promising! I'll make sure to let the doctor know. He's in his office this morning, but after lunch, he'll be up here to talk with you.
  27. W: Good, that's good
  28. N: The doctor has written in the notes possible MCS. Did he explain that to you?
  29. W: No, what's MCS?
  30. N: When a patient begins to recover from a coma, they can move into either VS, which is vegetative state, or MCS, minimally conscious state. You can recover from a vegetative state, but it is far more common to recover from MCS. We still can't guarantee recovery, but this is a step in the right direction.
  31. W: *exhales* That's the first good news we've had in days.
  32. N: I assume the other nurses have told you to talk to him frequently?
  33. W: Oh yes, as much as I can
  34. N: Have you noticed any response when you do? Flickering eyelids, twitching hands?
  35. W: Yes! Yesterday, we were watching some TV after dinner, and I was asking him about a movie, and his hand started moving. It twitched a few times, then stopped.
  36. N: I really don't want to get your hopes up, but that may be a sign he's making progress. Just stay hopeful, but be prepared if things don't improve.
  37.
  38. N: Now, I need to do all the boring stuff, I have to update his vitals and change bandages. I'd like to turn him on his side for a few hours, as well. Would you mind helping? Here, I'll pull him up and you push this pillow behind his back.
  39. N: One, two, three, pull
  40. N: There, this should make it easier to get this cuff on to check blood pressure.
  41. W: If you don't mind, I need to run home and let the dog out. Ugh, my hair is all gross, I think I'll grab a shower, too.
  42. N: No, that's fine, we'll take care of him for you.
  43. W: *close to microphone, quiet* Hey baby, I'm going to grab some coffee and run home to check on Max and take a shower. I'll be back in about an hour. I'll bring my laptop, and we'll Skype your mom again so the kids can talk to you. *kiss* Be back soon, hun
  44. W: *towards nurse, louder* Make sure to have someone call my cellphone if anything changes
  45. N: Of course!
  46. W: Thanks
  47. *door opens and closes*
  48. N: *humming, velcro sound from blood pressure cuff*
  49. N: Now, I'm going to slip this on your finger here to get your pulse and oxygen. Since this is my first time as your nurse, I'd like to check your back for bed sores, I don't know how well they've been keeping you moving.
  50. N: *humming*
  51. N: Looks good, no rashes. Your toes and fingers are all nice and pink, so circulation is good.
  52. *beeping*
  53. N: Blood pressure is 102 over 72, normal range. *scribbles* Pulse is 63, oxygen 99%. *more scribbling* Now, I'm going to grab my light and check your pupils.
  54. *click*
  55. N: *humming*
  56. *gasp and jump*
  57. N: Oh, sorry, I just...
  58.
  59. *speaking slowly*
  60. N: Can you hear me, sir?
  61.
  62. N: Oh! That's good, now do that again, move your eyelids for me. Good, keep trying.
  63.
  64. N: There you go! Can you focus on me? Can you follow this light for me?
  65. *small laugh*
  66. N: You're doing great. Oh, be careful trying to move. Let me get this cuff and monitor off.
  67. *velcro rip*
  68. N: Careful! Don't try to sit up. Just relax.
  69.
  70. N: No, please be careful with the bandages, your burns are healing well, but you need to leave them alone for now. I'm sorry if they are itchy.
  71.
  72. N: Do you think you can talk for me?
  73. *longer pause*
  74. N: *laugh* Of course, there's some ice water right here.
  75. N: Here, drink as much as you want, I can refill it if you need it. My god, your wife is going to be so excited!
  76.
  77. N: *dumbfounded* What? Your wife, <name>. She just left a couple minutes ago.
  78. *pause*
  79. N: What?
  80. *longer pause*
  81. N: Oh god. So you aren't... *covers mouth* Oh god.
  82.
  83. N: No. No, your brother died in the accident. You were badly hurt, burns on your face and chest, you've been in a coma for over two weeks. I imagine they already had the funeral for your brother... I mean, for you. Oh my god. How the hell could this happen?
  84.
  85. N: Yes, twins. But no birthmarks or tattoos or anything?
  86. N: *sigh* This is a crazy mess, I don't even know where to start fixing this. Your death certificate has already been written!
  87.
  88. N: Yes, that makes sense. I'll go call your... brother's wife, let her know you're awake. She might even be in the cafeteria still, if she's getting that coffee.
  89.
  90. N: Of course, I can do that. If that's what you want, I'll just tell her that you're awake, and send her up here. If you think it would be best to break the news yourself, I can respect that.
  91. N: Okay, I'm going to run to the front desk and call her, just be patient, we'll get this figured out.
  92. *door opens and closes*
  93.
  94. SCENE BREAK - in the hospital's cafeteria
  95. *background noise from cafeteria/coffee shop*
  96. *cellphone rings*
  97. W: Hello? Yes, this is...
  98. *pause*
  99. W: Really? Oh my god, I'll be right there!
  100.
  101. SCENE BREAK - back in the room
  102. *door flies open*
  103. *wife enters, the next few lines are spoken rapidly and have basically zero pause, her "husband" gets no chance to respond*
  104. W: Oh my god! It's true! You're awake!
  105. *runs across room*
  106. *hugs*
  107. W: *muffled against a shirt, crying* I was so worried. I wasn't sure if you were ever going to wake up. I didn't know what to do without you.
  108. W: *backs up, rapidly kissing, talking between kisses* I ... just ... love ... you ... so ... much.
  109. W: The kids are going to be so excited! They keep asking about you. They're worried. They were here visiting yesterday, but they were so scared seeing you unconscious, they just didn't know what to do. But if they see you awake, talking?
  110. W: They'll be so happy to have their daddy back!
  111. *hugs again*
  112. W: Oh, sorry, I hope I wasn't squeezing you too hard. How do you feel?
  113.
  114. W: I'm sure that's normal, you're probably going to feel fuzzy for a while. You've been out for sixteen days.
  115. W: Um
  116. *gets quieter and somber*
  117. W: I have bad news, though, hon. Your brother didn't make it. You were both knocked out when the car flipped, and something caught fire. There was a guy who saw the crash, he stopped to help, he was able to pull you out. Your brother was pinned, though. They tried to pull him out, but the fire just got too big. When rescue arrived and put out the fire, he was long gone. I'm so sorry.
  118. W: We had the funeral while you were out. I got a chance to talk to his friends and his boss. I guess that one girl broke up with him a couple months ago, I talked to her anyway, let her know what happened. She didn't seem to care, just wanted to talk about her new boyfriend. Heartless bitch.
  119. W: No, please don't cry. He wouldn't want you to cry on his behalf. Just... let me hold you, okay?
  120. *improv hugging, sobbing, sniffling, etc for a while*
  121. *some sniffing*
  122. W: Yuck, you smell like a hospital. *laugh through tears* We need to fix that. I still need to run home and check on Max. I'll take a quick shower, and bring back your own deodorant and cologne. You'll feel so much better once you smell like yourself again. *giggles* I know I'll feel better too!
  123. *knock on the door, door opens*
  124. N: Hello again, I'm coming back in.
  125. *walks across room*
  126. N: I spoke with the doctor, he'll be on his way over in a couple hours. He's got a few tests he'd like to do. In the meantime, he asked that you try to get some normal sleep.
  127. W: That's okay, I'm going to run home. For real this time. *kisses his forehead* I'll be back, honey, get some rest.
  128. *walks out and closes door*
  129. N: *quietly* You didn't tell her.
  130.
  131. N: Look, this is a very unusual situation, I admit. But, this can't be a good idea.
  132.
  133. N: I'm sure you could pretend to be your brother, I just don't think you should! I mean, I don't know.
  134.
  135. N: Look... *frustrated sigh* I can't get this involved with my patients. I've made that mistake too many times. I'm just going to pretend that you are who is on this chart here. I'll try to forget what I know. I'll just finish updating your chart here.
  136. *scribbles, then pauses*
  137. N: After this shift is done, I'll trade with one of the other day nurses. I'm not a good liar, if I'm assigned to you, I'll let something slip eventually. This is your problem to deal with.
  138. N: Now, can you sit forward? I'm going to listen to your lungs.
  139.
  140. N: Okay, now deep breath in...
  141. *volume fades out*
  142.
  143. SCENE BREAK - four days later
  144. *knock and door opens*
  145. W: Hey, sorry, I said I'd be here in ten minutes. I parked on the other side of the hospital out of habit. I kinda forgot they moved you over here after you came out of the coma.
  146.
  147. W: Yes, I know, you've been here for four days now, but you have to remember, I visited you over there in the burn center for sixteen days. Like I said, it's a habit now. Anyway, how are you feeling today? Did they bring breakfast already?
  148.
  149. W: And did you eat it all?
  150.
  151. W: Good, then I have a treat for you!
  152. *shakes paper bag with something in it*
  153. W: Tadaa! A donut, I got your favorite kind...
  154.
  155. W: What? No, the cinnamon roll with nuts on top, from the bakery in town. Here, I'll cut it in half, you can save the rest for after lunch.
  156.
  157. W: So, I talked with your mom again today. She's over at our house, taking care of things. Since you're probably getting discharged tomorrow, I figured I'd spend the night with you again one last time, then we'll go home in the morning and hang out with your mom for a little while. After that, you can sleep in your own bed again! Sound good?
  158.
  159. W: I brought the laptop with me, want to fire up Netflix and watch something together?
  160.
  161. W: Alright, scoot over. Can I have a bite of that donut?
  162.
  163. W: Pretty please? I'll give you a nice, long kiss...
  164. *improv make out session*
  165. W: *whispers* Sorry, I just really need you. I can't help it, my body is aching. But, I'll be good, we need to wait until we get home and have some real privacy. I promise I'll take care of you, too.
  166. *clears throat*
  167. W: So, what episode were we on?
  168.
  169. SCENE BREAK - after bedtime that night
  170. *waking up, yawns*
  171. W: *whispers to herself* Fell asleep watching our show.
  172. *closes laptop lid, puts it to the side*
  173. W: *whispers to herself* Glad I thought to put the rail up. Nothing worse than falling out of these hospital beds. Well, bathroom break...
  174. *gets up and walks across the room, door opens then closes again*
  175. *long pause*
  176. *faint sound of toilet flushing, door opens*
  177. *walking back*
  178. W: Oh, did I wake you up? Sorry.
  179. W: I'm coming back to bed, don't worry.
  180. *climbs into bed*
  181. *pause*
  182. W: Can I... ask you something?
  183.
  184. W: It's just, you've been so different. I thought it was the pain, or the medicines they have you on... but you aren't really going back to normal.
  185. W: I mean, you always seem nervous around me. You used to insist on touching and holding me, all the time. Now you won't even hold my hand unless I grab yours first.
  186.
  187. W: No, I guess I just mean sex. Like, we were at that party at your brother's house like a month ago, and you were all over me. I had to drag you into the bathroom for a quickie, because I was worried you were going to bend me over right there on the couch. *giggles*
  188. W: I mean, I would've loved it, but the rest of the family would not have approved. *laughs*
  189.
  190. W: But earlier today, I told you how bad I needed you, and you just went all red and looked at the floor.
  191.
  192. W: I know it shouldn't bother me, but it hurt. We never reject each other's advances. Ever.
  193. W: Well, except that time we both drank too much and you wanted to start something but I had to push you away to run to the toilet to empty my stomach.
  194.
  195. W: *quiet, sad* But today... are you not interested in me? Have I changed since the accident? Have your feelings changed?
  196.
  197. W: I don't know how to fix this unless you talk to me. I just... *interrupted by kiss*
  198. *kissing becomes more aggressive, faint moaning*
  199. W: *breathlessly, whispering* Thank you.
  200. *kissing more*
  201. W: Mmm, I thought so, you're getting hard. We both need this. It has been 23 days, almost 24. I've been counting. Ever since you woke up, my desire just switched right back on. Here, feel it, my panties are soaked, and my crotch is so *hot*.
  202. W: I know you need it too.
  203.
  204. W: What? No, the door doesn't lock. Either we both cram into your little bathroom, or we just take our chances right here on the bed. It's the middle of the night... it isn't that risky.
  205. W: I want it.
  206. *stands up*
  207. W: I'll just take these pants and my panties off... get that cock out for me...
  208.
  209. W: And I'll climb on your lap.
  210. *stifled moan*
  211. *from here to the end of the sex scene, lines are meant to be whispered, with mixed in moans of pleasure*
  212. W: God I needed this. Like an itch I couldn't scratch
  213.
  214. W: See what I mean, though? Your arms are just laying there. Grab my ass like you usually do!
  215.
  216. W: Much better... don't move your hips, let me do the work
  217.
  218. W: That feels so good
  219.
  220. W: Just gonna grind down on you
  221.
  222. W: Fuck, there we go, just like that, pull me onto you
  223.
  224. W: What? No, hold on a little longer, I'm almost there
  225.
  226. W: No, I want you to cum in me, fill me up
  227. W: Fill me up
  228. W: Right there... now... go ahead, I'm cumm...mmm...ing!
  229.
  230. *after orgasm, still panting*
  231. W: I really want to lay down on your chest, but I don't want to put weight on your burns.
  232.
  233. W: Okay, I'll lay down slowly, let me know if it hurts
  234.
  235. W: That okay?
  236. W: Can you reach the blanket, pull it up over us?
  237.
  238. *still breathing heavy, light shudders*
  239. W: I have some things to tell you
  240.
  241. W: No, just let me talk for a minute
  242. W: I know the truth.
  243. *long pause*
  244. W: I mean, I beat the ambulance to the hospital after the accident, I talked with the police and the doctors. They wanted me to... to identify the body, your brother. I just couldn't face that. So I went after you, instead. I came in and held your hand, after they had you stabilized.
  245. W: I told them I could definitely tell that you were my husband. That I was your wife, and I was going to stay with you no matter what.
  246. W: At the time, I really just didn't want to know. I was too overwhelmed, I wasn't ready to face the possibility that I had lost him. I lied to everyone, even myself, just to keep the hope alive.
  247. *long pause*
  248. W: At the funeral, some part of me knew the truth, it made me grieve for him. I cried for my lost husband, but never said anything. I had to stay strong, for my kids.
  249. W: After that, I cried every night, holding your hand. But I still stayed by your side, waiting for you to wake.
  250. *sniffling, holding back tears*
  251. W: I felt so bad, lying to everyone. But nobody but you could point out the lie.
  252. W: Then, the day you woke up, when I saw your eyes, the way you looked at me. The way you spoke. I couldn't pretend to myself anymore. But I was selfish. I wanted you to help me keep my lie. So I talked about the kids. I wouldn't let you interrupt me.
  253. W: It worked. You took my lie and made it yours. *rueful laugh*
  254.
  255. W: So, though I feel like a truly horrible person for even thinking this, but... would you take this lie, make it true? Be my husband?
  256. *longer pause*
  257. W: Yes, I know, I've thought this through. On our honeymoon, we talked about future plans. How many kids we wanted, where we wanted to live, whether we wanted a lawn or a pool in the back yard, things like that.
  258. W: We had that same conversation year after year, every anniversary. After the kids were born, though, he told me that if he died, I had to find a new husband. He didn't want me to wait, to grieve more than a few days. He said his kids needed a father. He wanted me to look for a new man that was like him, someone he would be good friends with, and agree with, if he were alive.
  259. W: Who could possibly do that better than you? His own twin brother?
  260.
  261. W: I mean, everything is already in place, you don't have to do a thing. Just come home with me in the morning. Keep pretending to be your brother around the kids. Show them love, like you always have as their uncle.
  262. W: And if you want, when we're in private, love me as a husband, and I'll love you as a wife.
  263.
  264. W: I mean, if you haven't figured it out, I'm pretty insatiable. I'll keep you satisfied, far more than that whore of a girlfriend that dumped you. *giggles*
  265. W: What do you think?
  266. *long pause*
  267. W: Um, yeah, about that...
  268. W: Your brother got a vasectomy after we had just two. I told him I might want more, but he insisted.
  269. W: I still want more. That's why I wanted you to cum in me. I know you can still do that for me. That's why I laid down on top of you. That's why you're still in me. I want you to fill me, as much as you can, as often as you can. Just knowing that you could knock me up is already making me baby crazy.
  270.
  271. W: So, I'm going to go to sleep right here, you think on it. We'll talk about it again in the morning.
