  1. the musical centers around the tumultuous relationship between a newly-emancipated college freshman girl (kristen) and her plug-turned-fwb-turned-boyfriend (matt or matty). it's set to the music of the first two 1975 albums although not every song is used. musical numbers will be denoted with parentheses and quotation marks just for this synopsis. also fyi i gave everyone really white bread names because in my head i don't have names for all of these characters yet lol.
  2.
  3. act 1: the musical opens with kristen moving to the city for her first year of university, excited to find love and experiment with basically whatever she wants in terms of drugs, alcohol and partying ("the city"). she leaves behind her family -- her mom, dad and older brother mark -- as well as her boyfriend tyler who she's mutually "taking a break" from. through a few of her dorm mates, she's soon introduced to matty, who she begins to become acquaintances with and buy weed/pills from. ("chocolate") they grow closer and spend more and more time together, usually accompanied by other friends though and usually high. there's obviously chemistry and tension between them, and they even fool around a few times, but it reaches its peak when they're finally alone together in matty's apartment. matty tries to talk kristen into going all the way with him and at least being friends with benefits, but she suddenly pulls back from him because she still technically has a boyfriend, much to his disappointment (also because he's lowkey catching feelings). ("sex") nonetheless, he respects her feelings and doesn't go any further with her than she wanted; however, he asks that she take the time to get to know him as more than just her plug or her potential fuckbuddy, and invites her to spend an evening with him without any drugs or giving handjobs. she agrees and is somewhat surprised by his genuine interest in her. ("heart out") during their pseudo date night together, kristen and matty both realize they have lots in common and really click with each other on a personal level. they agree to some level of exclusivity with each other, without telling any of their friends, kristen's family, and especially tyler. then they're like fairly happy even though it's kind of irritating to matty that he has to be lowkey with everything. ("settle down") soon after, however, tyler calls kristen to tell her he's lost interest in possibly coming back to her and it's over. she feigns sadness but is actually delighted that she can be more with matty. the couple becomes "official", but as they fall deeper in love, matty's drug habit worsens and kristen stops giving a shit about school. ("robbers") things are idyllic for a few months through the honeymoon phase, but soon kristen, who has mostly stopped her drug usage and experimentation, begins to grow weary and irritated at matty. he dismisses her concerns as her just being naggy and a girlish heartbreaker for threatening to leave. ("girls") in the midst of their tension, they get an invite to mark's wedding. kristen rsvps on behalf of both of them but makes matty promise not to pull any bullshit there. so lmao that's exactly what he does. he manages to score a shit ton of coke from one of his friends right before the wedding day, and as he's being a dipshit and snorting it before the wedding, he offers some to mark when he sees him. ("menswear") an intermittent user himself, mark sees no harm in just a little before the big day. however, because of his decreased tolerance from not doing it in awhile, he accidently overdoses and dies mere hours before he's set to be married. kristen is launched into a spiralling depression due to the loss of her brother and the knowledge that it was matty's fault. ("is there somebody who can watch you") she immediately terminates her relationship with matty, vowing to never forgive him for the pain she has to now live with. matty is ashamed, heartbroken, and nearly driven to suicide. ("me")
