From Thorax’s first episode, we saw him shapechange into a rock, despite supposedly being on the edge of starvation. This leads to a few extrapolations:
Shapechanging into inanimate objects is possible
Shapechanged as an inanimate object, a changeling can still sense their environment
Shapechanging into things relatively the same size as a changeling (even inanimate objects) uses little to no power.
He also shapechanged just to prove a meaningless point, hence the last bit
