  1.
  2. “Hundreds of scraps fall from orbit every day, what is so special about this one?”
  3.
  4. Ikora’s brow furrowed, guarded curiosity beaming from her eyes. She toyed with the display in her hands, deft fingers playing over the holographic charts and readings, before she motioned for the other to continue their report.
  5.
  6. “Here. We’ve actually been following it for about twenty-four days.”
  7.
  8. The man reached over to manipulate his superior’s device, bringing up a plot of the object-in-question’s path of re-entry.His fingers brushed the numbers and equations away, bringing focus to the plotted course of the object.
  9.
  10. “Right about..-”
  11.
  12. He worked quickly, scrolling through a few days of information before stopping abruptly-
  13.
  14. “-Here, you see that? It changes course, by an almost arbitrary factor. Normally that wouldn’t mean anything, junk collides up there all the time; But then here..”
  15.
  16. His fingers slide over the display once more, following the object’s path for a few seconds before stopping again.
  17.
  18. “It does it again, more aggressive this time. Still minuscule, but noticeable.”
  19.
  20. He taps at the screen, bringing up a long list of logged events, stretching past the bounds of the device.
  21.
  22. “We recorded an additional forty-six such changes in speed and trajectory over the next three weeks.”
  23.
  24. “Hmmh..” She raised a hand, eyes flitting over the datapad again- “So it was being directed?”
  25.
  26. The woman’s piercing brown eyes glowed as she shifted her gaze back to the warlock before her, her face turning into one of veiled concern.
  27.
  28. “Yes, precisely. I’m amazed we caught it, really- look again at the course changes, how insignificant they are-”
  29.
  30. “So then whoever- or, perhaps, whatever brought this object down was attempting to hide it.”
  31.
  32. Ikora interrupted, setting the datapad down and projecting the object’s atmospheric path onto the holographic display of the command table.
  33.
  34. “-Yes, ma'am; they were. But we know where it landed.”
  35.
  36. She looked up at the glimmering projection of the object’s path, following the plot with her eyes from the moment it broke into the upper atmosphere until it vanished from their sensors.
  37.
  38. “Contact the Arachs. We’re going to need a salvage crew.”
