47. Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.
 48. To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
 49. Although clunky and implausible in spots, Contraband worked for me up until the film plagiarized a small but very important sequence from the gangster epic "Once Upon A Time In America," starring Robert Dinero and James Woods. For that, thirty lashes with a wet noodle for all involved in bringing both the original and this remake to the masses. I searched the review boards to see if anyone mentioned the faux pas, but nobody did. Not even the crankiest critics. In case you're wondering, or even care, the gimmick in question requires something found on nearly every kitchen table and involves a basic chemistry reaction. Now, if Wahlberg's character preceded the gimmick by saying, "I saw this in a movie once," or "got this one from my incarcerated pappy's Smuggler's Handbook," there is a slight chance I might have looked the other way...but he didn't, and so I couldn't. Why? Look, its been said that genius borrows nobly; to do that, one needs to borrow the concept and make it his own...quietly, invisibly, masterfully. Operative verb borrow. Not steal. In Contraband, the writer borrowed the concept but refused to give it back or make it his own by using it in exactly the same circumstance as the original. Which makes him both a thief AND a fraud. (I know, I know, that's harsh. But try plagiarizing on an English final and see what happens when you get caught...it's worse in the real world cause you can get sued.) If you have time to burn, check out Once Upon a Time in America - I believe it is still available on Netflix. And when you spot Robert Dinero's 12-year old character use it, you'll understand my gripe.
 50. 'CONTRABAND': Three Stars (Out of Five)

This Mark Wahlberg action vehicle is a remake of a 2008 Icelandic film called 'REYKJAVIK-ROTTERDAM'. 'CONTRABAND's director Baltasar Kormakur, starred in the original (playing the role Wahlberg does). This is his first Hollywood film. The American screenplay was written by Aaron Guzikowski and based on a script by Arnaldur Indrioason and Oskar Jonasson. It co-stars Kate Beckinsale (as a blond!), Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Foster. The movie is routine and unoriginal but it's still entertaining.

In the film Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, an ex-smuggler of contraband who went legit, got married and started a family. When his young brother-in-law (Caleb Landry Jones) gets in trouble with a local drug dealer, named Briggs (Ribisi), and ends up owing him a lot of money Farraday finds himself drawn back in to that world once again in order to help him. Briggs threatens Farraday's wife (Beckinsale) and children and pressures Chris in to making a trip to Panama in order to purchase some counterfeit money so he can repay him. Farraday turns to his longtime friend and old partner Sebastian (Foster) for help.

The movie is intense at times and somewhat involving but there's definitely nothing new here we haven't seen before. Wahlberg does make a decent action tough guy (once again), the rest of the cast is adequate as well (although Beckinsale is severely underused) and the directing and writing are decent too. It's the kind of movie that's fun while you're watching it but is ultimately forgettable. Just for passing the time with though you could definitely do a lot worse.

Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rHRJKrR2Lk
 51. This Americanized version of the 2008 Nordic thriller "Reykjavik Rotterdam" transfers the original's gritty, violent action into an entertaining and intense starring role for Mark Wahlberg.
 52. When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would. a5c7b9f00b
