There is a temptation to call my criticisms of civic nationalism or liberalism theoretical. This is sadly missing the key fact that we are living in an era where both have failed. Maybe they werent tried enough but failure is still failure.

Interestingly, many criticisms of ethnonationalism are in fact theoretical or merely possibilities since ethnostates exist and have existed without them. And as such we can see if they are truly weaknesses of ethnostates or some other factor.

I see fewer such allowances for liberalism or civic nationalism, at least none which cant be obviously contested, like citing a state still in possession of an overwhelming supermajority or taking in people similar to themselves as successful civic nationalism
