Heartbreaker

As the bell for lunch had rang, Luna made her way to the cafeteria and sat down at one of the tables. Her mom had packed her a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich alongside an apple and a cookie. It was pretty basic, but Luna never complained. As she continued to eat, she heard a voice call out to her from behind.

"Luna?"

"Hmm?" Luna turned around to see Sam, the object of her affection.

Luna had discreetly slipped a love letter into her locker yesterday, so Sam's sudden appearance set her heart aflutter. She had signed it anonymously though, as she had seen in TV shows that featured high school crushes, so she was a bit curious as to how she figured out it was her that sent the letter. The anticipation made her tremble, but she knew she had to play it cool.

"Oh hey dude how's it going?" Said Luna in a calm and collected manner.

"Luna you'll never believe what happened!"

"What's up?"

"I got this love letter in my locker yesterday!" Said Sam, pulling the letter out of her pocket.

And there it was, the letter that Luna had poured her heart into. The mere sight of Sam holding it made Luna's heart race in anticipation.

"They didn't sign their name though, so I don't know who sent it..." Said Sam, looking the letter over.

It was obvious now that Sam hadn't figured it out, which means that she didn't come to Luna to answer her feelings. This revelation made her heart sink a bit, but she thought of a way that she could bring the truth to light. Before she could give a reply though, Sam added an addendum to her previous statement that changed everything.

"I really hope it's from Steven!" Exclaimed Sam, holding the letter tightly against her chest.

"O-Oh, you mean Steven from band practice?" Said Luna, feeling her heart begin to crumble.

"Totally! He's so wild and dreamy..." Said Sam staring into the distance and looking love-struck.

Luna was dazed; confused even. She felt her head spin as a whirlwind of emotions coursed through her in the wake of the indirect rejection that she was receiving. She didn't know what to do, what to say; she felt utterly lost. Amidst the tumultuous feelings inside of her, she said the worst thing possible.

"Do you think there's a chance?"

"What?"

"A chance of, you know... Maybe the letter was, written by a girl?"

Sam stared and blinked at Luna for a few seconds, though the seconds felt like years to Luna and Sam's blank stare burned into her.

"What? Ew, no way!" Said Sam with a giggle.

With those cutting words, Luna felt her heart shatter. If she had just kept her mouth shut, she could have just kept living in ignorance. Instead though, she discovered the truth of the matter. There was no going back after this, she could no longer that eventually she might have a chance with her; it was all over. It was all she could do to keep herself from crying right then and there, but she kept herself collected, just enough to finish the conversation.

"Y-Yeah..." Said Luna, forcing out a chuckle.

"Well anyways, I gotta get going. Talk to you later Luna!" Said Sam, running off and giving her a wave goodbye.

And so Luna was left there, slumped over in heartbreak. Her whole body was shaking with pain. She found herself unable to lift her head up, unable to move at all. All she could do was mutter out,

"Y-yeah... Talk to you later..."
